The song is about a somber time. Adding flash and flare just kills the heart of it.

True statement; the original recording delivers the message more appropriately. Just the same, I have to admit I enjoyed this upbeat version.

I always love the original, but this is a truly cool alternative!!!! And Mr. Ford shows what a truly gifted performer that he is!!! Times were different in 1965 than they were when the song was originally done, and it's likely he had to make adjustments to keep up. The go-go dancers add something very interesting to the performance, too!!! It has a different vibe than the original 1955 song, but it is fantastic on its own terms!!!

Even though I wasn't born until the very end of '66 I grew up listening to Tennessee Ernie, as well as others from the time, and even before, but now I'm not sure which version of this song I like better.. This one or the original.

Those dancers crack me up. I'm 62, grew up in So CAL, and none of my friends ever danced like that. That was just a Hollywood deal. Hollywood was so out of touch back then, and they still are if you ask me. We would mock some of these dances sometimes, if we had a dance partner we weren't fond of. It was all a joke to us.

Honestly, I wonder what Tennessee Ernie Ford actually thought of this presentation of such a great song. Maybe some tv producer or agent talked him into this saying he has to get hipper and he said 'okey okey. bring on the dancing girls and jack up the temo'. Regardless, he's still got one of the world's most iconic voices!

He did actually record this version on to a 7", which is what he is miming to. My dad had it, gave it to me and someone stole it from my record box. I see a lot of people don't much like this, but it is a real piece of its time, very bizarre and I have loved it since I was a kid. Luckily I kept a digital copy of the record, but would love to track it down again. There is also a similar reversion of Shake Rattle and Roll by Big Joe Turner, which I love to bits.

Ernie recorded an "updated" version of his classic 1955 hit for Capitol in January 1965; it was released at the time {#5425, one of Ford's rarest Capitol "45" issues} he "plugged" it on this performance of the "PALACE". It wasn't reissued until its inclusion on the 1994 CD box set, "Masters 1949-1976".

Go St Peter's basketball! I use "sixteen tons" by Tennessee Ernie Ford (several versions including Jeff Beck and ZZ Top), and Smoke, Smoke, Smoke (that cigarette)" by Commander Cody and the lost planet airmen; as my Saint Peter's Peacocks theme songs: besides their original team theme song, "oh when the saints go marchin' in"!!

I never knew that T.E. Ford would have been that liberal with this song changing it into a rock and roll hit. It sounds hip. I grew up listening to Tennessee Ernie Ford singing Christian hymns, but rock and roll? After 19 years since his death I find that to be a surprise.

Naturally the original has the most weight and hasn't got one single iota of vacuity. Yet Tom Jones did spring to mind automatically when I heard his more projected baritone slicing through the increased tempo.
Plaudits for him to tamper with a classic (that is arguably his own anyway :D) and it's enjoyable.
Tom Jones's voice is less agile now, but who cares if he sings some songs differently. If an artist changes with the times it advocates canniness and insight.

Almost like a preview of "Stomp." Reminds me of The Andy Griffith Show episode where the young pop singer Keevy Hazleton returns to his hometown of Mayberry looking for inspiration. Finds it in the form of a sweet ballad about the place by Aunt Bea and her best friend. Gives it the revved up treatment in an on camera rehearsal much like the one here. After vociferous and poignant objection by the ladies Hazleton records it for the real show note for note as the original ballad's arrangement. As far as I'm concerned Hazleton knocked both versions out of the park. And so did Ford.B.W.

The 1965 Capitol single is even more garage band inspired than this live take would suggest. And the flip side, the satire Hicktown proves that the good Professor Ford was far more on top of things than any paisley elitism might allow.

  • @cmoore185

I remember when he recorded that . I was 7. I just got through educating a snot nosed kid what will happen if his generation doesn't start thinking in self sufficiency mode instead of how they are now. I told him if they didn't get their heads on right that they would all be working for a multi national corporation like Samsung, Toyota, or worse. He came back with "what's wrong with working for Samsung?" I had to try and bring my 65 years down where a 17 year old would understand it. I used "me" for the corporation and explained what it would be like living in an economic vacuum. I finally got him to understand that if everyone worked for me, that I could pay them whatever I wanted. I would therefore own the stores, and basically their life. I thought about this song and told him to listen to it. It's the first time I've heard it in years. I forgot how powerful Ernie Ford's voice was. It's like you are hearing something stronger than man.
