Thanks, Anton. I was never a “club” person, but beekeeping clubbing has changed that. I’m now on committees and do presentations. It’s a field where there’s different views, but with little exception, respect for those views. At least, that’s my experience. Plus, there’s always more to learn, both about bees and their keepers.

I assume you mean small hive beetle (SHB), Brett. There’s a number of ways to help the bees keep them under control. A strong, healthy colony is the best defence. When SHB get the upper hand, the bees are already below strength for another reason. It could be adding a super too soon, before there’s enough bees to defend the extra space. It could be AFB, they might be queenless or too many after swarms. I use silver bullets with diatomaceous earth in the hive and screened bottom boards with DE on the tray. I’m experimenting with Guardian Entrances. There’s the chemical route, but I prefer not to go there.
