- In this video I visit Reliance, TN to hike the John Muir National Recreation Trail along the Hiwassee River and stop along the way to paint a view.
This painting and others are available on my website: www.toddderr.com/
The John Muir quote:
"My path all to-day led me along the leafy banks of the Hiwassee, a most impressive mountain river. Its channel is very rough, as it crosses the edges of upturned rock strata, some of them standing at right angles, or glancing off obliquely to right and left. Thus a multitude of short, resounding cataracts are produced, and the river is restrained from the headlong speed due to its volume and the inclination of its bed.
All the larger streams of uncultivated countries are mysteriously charming and beautiful, whether flowing in mountains or through swamps and plains. Their channels are interestingly sculptured, far more so than the grandest architectural works of man. The finest of the forests are usually found along their banks, and in the multitude of falls and rapids the wilderness finds a voice. Such a river is the Hiwassee, with its surface broken to a thousand sparkling gems, and its forest walls vine-draped and flowery as Eden. And how fine the songs it sings!" - Навчання та стиль
I’m a 52 year old from south central Ky and just getting into melding my love of hiking the Big South Fork & DBNF with plein air painting. I agree I love the mood of the forests during a rainy foggy day with all the bright moss popping out from the orange & browns. Stunning scenery, your panting captured the mood well.
Thanks for viewing and dropping a comment. That's a great area too. All the best in your plein air painting journey.
We live in Phoenix, AZ. so I paint in the Spring and early Summer because I do not like the cold. Loved your video.
Thank you! I'm getting to where I don't like the cold too much either. Particularly after having just gotten home from Florida. 😀 Happy painting!!
I live 3 miles from where John Muir was born in Dunbar, Scotland before he emigrated with his family to America. He has always been a big fan of mine. One of his famous quotes being "There is no repose like that of the green deep woods" and I can totally relate to that. His childhood county of East Lothian is full of beauty and as a result I've started painting which gives me so much pleasure as I can see it does for you too!
That is so awesome!! I’m so glad to hear from you and thank you for sharing that. Happy painting!!!
I didn't know about the John Muir National Recreation Trail in Tennessee. I lived in Tennessee when little...my family settle there generations ago. I also lived by Muir Woods in Marin County, California for years. I have been painting and hiking, both, all my life. All the things that make me feel connected in your video. Thank you.
Very cool! Thanks for leaving a comment and watching my video.
You are truly blessed! 😎
Thank you for your service Brother! 🇺🇸
I appreciate that’s, Steve. Thank you.
I am a plein air watercolor painter in New Mexico…and I thank you for showing us a part of Tennessee and your painting.😊
Awesome state, New Mexico. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Don’t you just love that Fly on the Wall palette? I got one last year and love it. Nice job!
Thank you! Yes, the FOTW is a handy piece of kit, for sure.
Thank you for your video's, I didn't know Tennessee was so picturesque. Your paintings are great! It's not easy to simplify the landscape, creating a good design. Congratulations!
Thank you!! I appreciate you watching and leaving a comment. I'm not a Tennessee native, but I sure landed in a pretty area.
Wow...I love it😊
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment.
Makes me homesick. Born in Athens, TN. ❤
Thanks for watching! I'm just down the road in Cleveland. I grew up in Southern Indiana and lived around other parts of the country. Been here for almost 5 years and it's a great area.
I do like to watch you paint. Thank you.
Thanks for letting me know. I intend to do more on my process in the future.
♥
what a great video, I'm 6 minutes in, it really reminds me of the Huon river in Tasmania.
Thanks for watching and dropping a comment. Would love to visit that part of the world sometime.
