  • Mussolini's House at Rhodes (Rodos, Rhodos) in the Greek Islands Greece - An old neglected house which was supposed to be of Benito Mussolini, it was actually occupied by General Di Vecchi, Italian Governor of Rhodes between 1936-1940. Summer residence of the then Italian governor of Rhodes.
The luxurious mansion, which has sadly been allowed to fall into disrepair, is situated in this evergreen village Profitis Ilias. The Italian governor, realising from the beginning the advantage of having a dense forest at his doorstep, which he could exploit to provide material for building construction, imported good and experienced woodcutters and carpenters from Italy, who used this precious resource to build Eleousa.
Elafos & Elafina hotel complex that has just recently been restored to its former glory. The set of two separate buildings named Elafos and Elafina (Deer and Doe) were built by the Italians. The Elafos was built in 1928 and is comprised of three floors and a basement. Later, a restaurant, a ballroom, a veranda and a tennis court were all added on the ground level. In 1932, the Elafina was built to complement the first building, but it was a bit smaller with only two floors and a basement. Both buildings have copied the Swiss chalet-style of architecture, with A-frame roofs, wooden window frames and wood-structured verandas.

I don’t know who now owns this place. It would be really nice place to restore back to its former glory, it is a very impressive house with amazing views.

Hi I visited the house with my wife in July 1978 and the drawers were still in the wardrobes, but all the electrics and copper had been removed. The roof then was in very good condition which is essential if the property is to survive. Now sadly some of the tiles are missing and therefore it is only a matter of time before total decay sets in. What a waste! I would dearly love to gather a group of people who could purchase, protect and restore the property and gardens. But then maybe I am dreaming, but I love Greece especially the islands. Great video thank you. Paul Keegan. Dublin.

I am afraid these are all the photos I have of the house. It is fantastic to walk around it, I must have been a good hour around this house as the area is just so tranquil.

I’m glad you enjoyed the photos, the house is easily missed if you are not looking for it. It must have been a fantastic place when it was built.
Did you walk around inside the building and upstairs?

It really is worth seeing, it’s a bit like a modern castle ruin. The stairs are a bit rickety, but the view from the balcony upstairs is just amazing. Did you have a look at the boiler house around the back?
So this was your 9th year there, you must know Rhodes like the back of your hand.

We almost missed it too...it was really a worth to make a turn around and checked it out.
We looked around the house and went to upstairs as well.
Very interesting historic place...it was a real luxury house years ago.

The reason I made the video was to show the fantastic building and surroundings and not what some people feel it represents.

I found it to be a very peaceful place, you could hear a pin drop. It is a pity the house has been left to get in to that state.

Rhodes is a fantastic Island with lots to see. It is a massive shame the building is left to decay like it has.

Why has someone not tried to buy and restore the house, before it got so bad? It would make an incredible boutique hotel and wedding venue, especially with the church and everything at hand

Hi again, would anyone know the present day value of the Governors House? pk.

I suspect it's on a heritage register and not for sale as such. It will probably rot a little longer before it's restored as the other buildings at Profitis Ilias and Kallithea have been. I just hope they don't wait too much longer, it may decay beyond the point of repair.

It’s what it represents though that counts !!!!!
I would not waste 1 penny in restoring- I would re build something uniquely Hellenic, which will bring the area back to its true roots ... Hellenic.
