Glen is a stiff drink for this crew and I'm into it
Yeah man I hear that
cause its fucking dogtown homie locals only hahaha no for real he speaks and im like yah the jay Adams we dream of is more than real and the inovation they where deffs doing disaster in the deep end and bs airs its fucking nutz man late 70s skating is gangster af
100%.
I loved every second!
Friedman keeps it real, legit gripes
Possibly the best interview the nine club has had.
If they would get him, Steve Olson and Mike V for a roundtable it would be the greatest thing since sliced bread.
@@TheLurchReaper420 this is the truth
They handled this one like the pros they fuckin are
Agreed
By far
I was waiting for this kind of talk here, This guy embodies Real, Original, Authentic, Genuine, and Vision. I hope we get more of these kind of people in skateboarding to keep it the way it should be.
Totally agree
Glen is a straight legend and had the fortune to be at the start of a number of movements. More importantly he had the foresight to pick up his camera and document it. Photographing, skate, punk, hip hop, and the counter culture and had time to produce Suicidal Tendencies first album. A legend and a visionary. Need to get C. R. Steck on that would be a production.
Amen💪

This is the best guest you ever had on your show! I wish there would be more people like him... Like he is a highly intelligent, critical, intellectual, punk, left thinker who stands behind the (normal) people, the community and the environment and just straight up calls out shit and tries to change it. (Of course, there're a lot of more people like him in this world but not really in skateboarding. Definitely more in Europe)
Luckily and finally there's a new generation with a big following in skateboarding who represent some of the same values he has...like Gifted Hater. It's so important, especially at this time.
Funny you say that, because GH said he was (maybe) going to cover this episode in an upcoming video, and I doubt it's going to be flattering.
He's really really jewy, absolutely 😞
For the last four decades this man has shaped the imagination and inspired a shit-ton of people all around the world, including me. I tip my hat to you Glen, don't worry about the generational gap. Your integrity and sound principles speak louder than words and somebody else, somewhere, sometime, will pick up the ball. Saludos form NW Italy, skater for life since 1985.
Appreciate this episode a lot. Glen is not only speaking his mind but is critical of things worthy of criticism.
Glen is one of the key figures in the history of three different MAJOR subcultures in American history. Everything in pop culture is influenced in some way by hip-hop, skateboarding, or punk rock. Awesome episode.
@@shags3071 It actually is. Do your homework.
Thank you Nine Club for this the living legend, heroes and true contributor to our culture. Much love and respect from Philippines 🇵🇭
Some of the 1st images of skating and punk rock I ever saw in life were shot by Glen.
No joke, Glen. You're a legend bro.
One of the best I've seen in a long time. Brutally honest and real. Respect.
Damn I appreciate and respect the hell out of his old school perspective on todays skating. Glen E. is so rough around the edges that it’s refreshing to hear him speak so blunt and honest with the NY humor that ties it altogether. Phenomenal episode! Will definitely be purchasing a few of his books.
I wouldn't say rough around the edges, more like refined and honed in
For me, this was the most inspiring Nine Club interview yet.
Brain emoji*
His candor is refreshing.
When I saw the thumbnail I knew I was gonna love this dudes story. Great interview.
47 years old... I pick and choose my guests to watch. Friedman is class!
Glen is a riot. Just caught the first 3 minutes before work and i'm already laughing...Good job Nine Club!
Preach Glen! Speak the truth! Industry and culture are not one and the same.
By far one of the truest no holds barred interview! Glen E. Friedman I am inspired by your art, your convection, and integrity.
as an aging punk, glen is an absolute hero. preach.
Punks not dead !
@@Adeadcop702 It just smells that way.
Best Guest you guys have ever had, fact! This is real. Real fucking talk, I feel somewhat vindicated for my ideals I uphold with the young bucks I roll with 😌
hahaha loooooved that supreme shit talk.
gr8 interview.
dug it more than i expected.
grew up seeing his pics on so many iconic punk & hip-hop album covers.
i remember always thinking 'damn, this dude is everywhere!'.
he's a monster!
a bit ornary & egotistical, but agree with alot of what he speaks.
thx for another gr8 episode Nine Club!
One of the best episodes yet, he pulls no goddamn punches. Love all of these shows with the older guys from the scene. Glen is a legend, respected by all who know and across many subcultures. Need him and Steve Olson on together, everyone else could just sit back and enjoy.
Bought "Fuck you heroes" in 1995 - Had to get it shipped from the US to my local record store. Life was different back then - especailly for an Aussie kid who was into punk rock on the other side of the world. What a great book is, and what an iconic guest to finally get on the show. Recently purchased a signed print of Glens Beastie Boys shoot, my fave band ever also. This interview was just so perfect - real as it gets.
Holy shit !! This dude has taken the most iconic photos in the history of my life, super stoked to see him on here, you guys continue to appall me, this is phenomenal
Appall...this word, I do not think it means what you think it means...
been WAITING for this episode!! Friedman is a legend!
omg thank you 9 club, Glenn E. Friedman is the GOAT!!!
57:00 glad to hear someone callin out the bull shit that gets so casually swept under the rug. This mans passion burns so ferocious to the point that its impossible to not feel it pass through your core. Genuinely reinvigorating. A lot of people have their favorite video parts they like to watch before they go shredding, as well as myself, but next time i hit the streets/parks, im watching this on my way out the door. Havent felt this level of pride, passion and drive in a long time. Truly inspiring to say the least, glad theres people like Glen in the community that keeps skateboarding and culture true to itself, and above all else, presents relentless integrity
Man this dude was intense. The most I’ve heard anyone mention capitalism. Good deal. I gotta check out his book. One thing I will say is that whenever anyone ever talks big like that they usually have a bunch of contradictions but it’s all good I get many of his points and I’m glad he is standing up for what is right. At least he doing that much and he is getting people to think and question which we need more of in this world.
Contradictions like he growing up in Brentwood benefited from the positive aspects of capitalism including understanding the business and paid for equipment at such a young age. I get where he's coming from tho the old school skate punk ethos etc. Fun to hear it on this show.
He's not talking big. He is big. It's hard for people today to understand the history.
@@aa-zf4yk yeah he’s big but I meant in terms of politics. He was talking serious ish about folks and companies which is fine but nobody’s perfect so I’m sure he has many faults too. I’m no fan of major corporations either but everything has to be taken into context. Without companies there would be no skateboards and skateboard culture. Unless everyone made diy skateboards. Jaaa. But yeah I don’t like when major non skate companies come in and profit off our culture. Exactly why I started my brand.
@@SanDiego_VDubLife small companies are great. For example, even though Powell is a big company. It's just George Powell. A true skateboard company. Oh yeah and Stacey, another LEGEND.
Corporations on the other hand are NEVER good for skateboarding. You are starting your own company. That is fantastic, I wish you all the best.
Keep in mind, I'm old, been skateboarding since 1974. For the most part, I find the skate culture today annoying. Doesn't stop me from skating. I skate everyday. I hope you do too. All the best to you....
omg woooow, by far the best hip hop photographer, I'm looking at his book in my book shelf right now!! Thank you
Love seeing the creatives from behind the scenes tell their story. I didn’t know him before but I do now. The way he shot on supreme is something I’ve been low key waiting hear from someone in the industry. Glen connecting various subcultures to skateboarding is something I like to hear people talk about. 9 club don’t miss I swear
I love the episodes with guy's like him, showing the connection between punk rock and skating. Amazing!!
My first board was a Vision Agent Orange. My first Punk albums were Fresh Fruit, In my Head & Never mind the Bullocks.
First (proper) board was a variflex and punk album was DK's fresh fruit also :-)
The Steve Olson and Steve Alba episodes were also about punk & skateboarding, my favourite episodes.
He definitely was and still is one of my idols. Back in the early 90s, I also used a Pentax I had gotten from my grandfather with a 17mm fisheye I bought later at a camera swap meet for both skate and hardcore show photos. It still takes great pictures today and is a good reminder it's usually not about the gear. This episode was definitely needed and a breath of fresh air.
I rarely listen to the same episode twice but.... he had so much nice stuff to say that im going for it again! Skateboarding is just the fucking best!!
yup! same here!
I'm only 12 mins in and I'm already considering that! It's so good and feels like an offshoot to Dogtown & Z Boys doc which I love!!!! His commentary is SO good in it!
Currently on run 3 lol, dude rules
Glen E Friedman. Thank you to Mr. Friedman.
I had many rock and roll CDs or punk rock CDs. I bought (2 or 3) books about album covers or rock musicians. I don't know where I first read his name but I know his name. I can double check my CDs but I know by intuition or instinct that he photographed some of my childhood heroes.
P.S I heard him loud and clear. No argument from me. Best wishes.

~~~Great show!!! I’m 58 my first Sk8 was a Black Knight w/ clay wheels I remember when Urethane came around and had a subscription to SkateBoarder for many years so I could really relate to this episode. I grew up in Santa Barbara and our scene was fun as hell in the early 80’s. Still great friends w/ a lot of my old Sk8 Crew. Ride on y’all~~~
A special, special, special guest indeed. I'm excited for this one 🍻
This interview is fucking AWESOME. Glen is a legend who was there, saw it, and photographed the progression of skateboarding with the skaters who changed the sport! (I'm the same age as Glen)
Kelly asks the best questions and Glen is a legend, thank you for this one
Thank you for this one Nine Club!!!!! This dude is the truth!!!!
this just might be my favourite episode. What a legend!
Thank you 9 Club for this Glen E Friedman interview. You (& Glen) are very appreciated.
Old school legend that (still) got his values in the right order, dope!
Great, thanks Glenn, now I'm never going to be able to watch a product review without hearing your voice whisper? "You don't need them."
It does explain a lot to know that he was from Brentwood, rich kid chip on his shoulder, driving him to prove how "core" he is. That drive produced some of the most iconic punk and skate images of the early days. A true legend
Love hearing this guys stories and seeing his amazing photography. Great episode
Greatest skate culture interview EVER
I’m a musician and photographer who loves following skateboarding and have been hooked on nine club the past couple months. my god this was such a good watch. Love his perspective on the origins of american punk music and skating intertwining. how that perspective fuels his rant on people commodifying skate culture is such a refreshing take. I really admire the inclusive and supportive community skaters have built for themselves. It’s really special from an outsiders perspective and it informs how I interact with the music scene I take part in. This episode really highlights how radical skating is and how to keep it that way. Here for it! Alright im done lol. Much love from Detroit!
Please bring Glen back!!!! I never wanted this episode to end!!!
A true living legend Glen Friedman thank you nine club 💯👊🏽💥🔥
I hollered so much agreement every few minutes through this. Glen knows.
not the interview I was hoping for but without a doubt the Interview most needed for ALL OF US!
Wow about damn time ! got his Book F-C* your Heroes ! Living Legend!
As a 46 yr old skater into all these things, I already love his books and his role in skating hip hop and punk. But this interview is rad. I fuckin love this guy so much more now. I can’t wait to own all his books.
It is absolutely refreshing to hear the first generation skaters,thanx mate for the legacy ❤;)-
I sat on this one for a few weeks. Finally watched it, one of the most enjoyable for me yet. Maybe that shows my age. Fantastic episode 👍
LOVE THIS, favourite quote: “I’ll tell you one thing, if you grew up on skateboarding, or punk rock or hip hop, you have NO EXCUSE for not having integrity!”
So damned good! I knew it’d be a good one but he’s telling it like it is.
Love this episode, the dogtown film is always something I stick on when I need some inspiration. Glen is such a legend, it’s nice to hear about skating through the experiences of an artist!
Glen is intense, core & real. This shit is in my blood, its genuinely skateboarding. He & Rodney Mullen are the heart & soul. Essential skateboarding. 9⁹🤙🏾🤙🤙🏼
What’s cool about The Nine Club is that you have 4+ people who have so much to say that they could do a podcast without having guests. And that they also have a “this is important, let’s just listen” mode makes these feel so full of integrity. Plus Roger does work with the reference media, giving us more to connect with this guest on.
Great interview, thanks for posting this Nine Club
You can tell Glen Friedman comes from the most organic and true generation of skaters - these dudes obviously didnt expect to get paid $hit from skating, they did it for the love and pushed skating as an art form. As for big money and major corporations influencing skateboarding that's not going to change at this point, but its good having older OG skaters like Friedman talk about how things were before major money got involved.
Tony Alva and Stacey Peralta didn't expect to get paid shit from skating? They both started commercial skateboard companies in the 1970's. And they were getting major coin way before that. Back to class dude.
Came to our ramp in 1983 and shot a cover of my friends doing doubles for Thrasher. Always been a fan, my #1 inspo
The amount of "fucks" in this episode dwarfs all other episodes combined haha Love it. Glen rules.
Finally some real talk! What a legend
Glen is totally right about hip hop and punk rock being similar. Content wise they are both spawned from disaffected young people who were clashing with police and other authority figures. They were coming largely from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and were angry about politicians who were doing things to keep the rich rich and the poor poor. Its the same heart with a different presentation. Been saying this for decades now and its good to hear someone else make the connection. I grew up on punk and hip hop because they both offered that same energy and message in a lot of ways. Both spoke to me.
Watched it twice. Legendary episode full of knowledge and what it truly means to be passionate about art and life.
Only 30 mins in and this is already a top tier ep! Much love y'all!
instantly becomes my favorite episode by far, so good
Glen can easily go of on the deep and be somewhat radicalized when it comes to politics and getting caught up in the mundane right vs left, god vs evil projection the society and government is trying to force upon you to choose a side BUT in the end of the day Glen got tons of stories and is a OG in skateboarding so take it or leave it! Thanks for getting him on guys
When and how to watch or listen live.
His backstory is conspicuously absent anywhere online. My hunch would be he comes from money and media/entertainment industry connections. In some ways he doesn’t hide from that but at the same time he clearly does.
Not taking anything away from his work, which is quite good and helped define an era. Takes balls to pull that off, doesn’t just magically happen on its own. Does call into question his staunch DIY ethic and heavy-handed leftist politics however.
hadn't heard of glen before this, but I love his ideas, man is true to his word.
Absolutely what I was hoping to see on The Nine Club. Some of us that live and breath passion are often called assholes for having strong opinions. I say we need more of that. We need more roots in skateboarding. With every Nike ad, with every Cariuma promo we stray from the heart and soul of skateboarding. There is nothing wrong with growth, sponsors, protecting our personal welfares. But having said that, we need to never lose sight of where we came from. Skateboarding started as such a pure thing, let's keep it honest, and sincere as the industry evolves.
Damn right brother
Remember.....in 1986 nikes were sought after by skateboarders
@@andersenjed Sure, but Nike would have not invested the money they do nowadays without the Jankowskis selling like hotcakes. They had free advertising space on skaters for years!
Not to type cast. But don’t say you are a punk, and get offended by the ones that grew up in that actual era. One of the best interviews that I have seen in this channel! Now go skateboarding!
I'm here to learn. This episode should be a banger!
That's a great interview right there. He's on fire!
Best. Guest. Ever.
Punks Not Dead thanks to people like Glen
Thanks guys! nice way to unwind after long day at work... classic stories and great laughs!
14 minutes in & I am just rolling laughing...FUCKING LEGEND!! THANKS SO MUCH!!!
Best episode in a Long time ❤🙏
Im 50 Love this old shit bro!!! been pushing since 9
Man you guys pulled out a original OG of the sport. A great episode from Roger pulling the clips to Chris interview.
Love everything about Glen.
Best Nine Club ever! What a dude!
Best episode ever! Fucking legend - calls it like he sees it.
This is a hitter, right here.
1:39:50 - skateboarders must listen to this! Friedman gets the essence of skateboarding.
What GF said about skaters finding their equipment, etc. It’s so true. I was in downtown Kuwait one evening (for work from the US) back in 2010 and there was one lone skater ripping up some giant square piece of concrete. We spoke for a while. Just two skaterats. Two different nationalities, religions, possibly worldviews - all rendered irrelevant because of the bond of skateboarding. That was a special moment for me.
Thank you Nine Club for bringing this wonderful human on. Most engaging interview for me by far
I would of love Rog to be in the table in this episode.
These are the episodes I really wish Rog would sit in person on the show, no disrespect to my boy dubs cause he's a legend too but lets be real, Roger always gets the most out of guest like this when he's on..
@@funkydankspliff totally agree! But no need to take Dubs out of the equation. Rog could of sit in the other table with Kelly. I could tell during the conversation he really want it to engage a couple of times 🤓
Skateboarding (society) today is severely lacking people of this calibre.
A new favorite of mine…Also Kelly E. Hart with ‘The E stands for Eś’ was amazing
Glen breaking it down about the truth of skateboarding and the industry ❤❤❤
One of the realist guest to show up on this show 🔥🔥🔥 No sugar coated bs with him
Hey, great episode, I like how the guest has his own opinion on the industry and is not there to please the audience. That's when it gets interesting, lotta stories too. I'm digging that
Just listenning and writting.... GLEN, YOU'RE THE MAN ! !
I'm pretty certain he is talking about Supreme and I couldn't agree more.
Integrity something no one has and something this life takes from us for money… i loved Glenn’s photographs i love dog town it blew my mind and black flag minor threat punk rock photos amazing!! There’s no people like Glenn in this world
about 5 F-bombs in the first 2 minutes of the episode, already one of my favorites!
Another great episode. Keep em coming. Skateboarder for life
Yes, Chris Roberts. Keep fuckin doing it. I mean the whole team, but these are the interviews that will cause a shift. Let's go.
This is the shit I am talking about. 1:48:14 Here is Glen recognizing what a fucking PRESENCE Roberts has become on the mic and of course his response is "Uh I just like to talk"... like so natural he doesn't even know it.
