  • Welcome to the Skyline Trail in beautiful Cape Breton, Nova Scotia!
This is one of the most popular hikes for anyone driving along the Cabot Trail. This, from what I can tell is due to the awe inspiring views from the road drawing you in as you gaze out upon the towering cliffside as it reaches out over a steep valley directly along the ocean... seeing people way out on the point soaking up the adventure.
The trailhead for the Skyline Trail can be accessed from the Cabot Trail (Route 30) inside of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park and in between Pleasant Bay and Petit Étang.
This hike is a 10.1 km loop trail which takes you through a beautiful area of fields, swamps and wooded areas which run along a large valley and out to the vast ocean. The pinnacle of this hike is when you reach the boardwalk which guides you down a narrow ridge overlooking the winding Cabot Trail and the rolling mountains of the highlands crashing into the ocean. You also have a good chance to come across a Moose on the trails if hiking in early morning.
You can complete the Skyline Loop Trail in around 3 hours at a moderate pace. There is seating and places to relax at various points along the boardwalk. The whole trail is a spread of gravel and extremely well maintained and groomed. It is even wheelchair accessible and perfect for bringing along your stroller for the little ones. In saying that, there are several points on the trail where there are large drop offs, so keep your children close and safe at all times. Unfortunately you will have to leave your dogs at home as dogs are not allowed on the trail.
You will most certainly encounter others on the trail due to the popularity of the Cabot Trail, the ease of access, and the fact the views are unbelievable! During the summer, especially weekends and peak season the Cabot Trail and all trails along it will be quite busy, but they will certainly still be worth it for the views!
This trail would serve as an exceptional excursion for anyone in the area or planning to drive the Cabot Trail. There are also many other amazing hikes and activities in the area and along the Cabot Trail to enjoy, so if you are craving more nature there are endless possibilities, but you could start with my personal favourites.... Gypsum Mine, Blueberry Mountain, Egypt Falls or Polletts Cove.
I hope that this video serves as a trail guide for some and as motivation for all to get out and enjoy some waterfalls, mountains and hiking trails wherever you may be!
    Happy Hiking🥾

It is a nice hike. But dangerous for those of us who experienced breathing difficulties because of the elevation. 5.1 miles 😢

Sorry to hear that! For being such a rugged coastline the parks have done a fantastic job at making the trails as accessible as possible, but unfortunately sometimes it remains difficult. I hope you could find some lovely scenic lookouts along the Cabot Trail! Such an amazing drive 😍

Is she smuggling 9 cans of ravioli under that jacket? Doubt she would admit it. I once ate 9 cans of ravioli and was pretty ashamed of myself
