I've spent the last hour and a lot of skin off my knuckles trying to reconnect that spring with the belt on both pulleys. I appreciate the tip. I'll give it a try.
Sorry, I know there are many different models of this Honda mower out there, this is just the one I have. I am not a mechanic or doing this repair with any other mowers.
Very helpful tip! Gives great leverage with ease. There's a 1/4" hole in the bracket that is usually used with a screwdriver, but not nearly as effective. As far as breaking a casing fin off as mentioned, you stick the bar as far in as you can, and then you're pushing against the casing, not a fin.
I finally found a video with the exact Honda HRX217 HXA generation. Unfortunately, my sticker that shows the full model version fell off. Would you be able to share the full model number on your sticker?
The gap in that transmission seems to have been spaced and sized just right for a proper Pry Bar tool. I just did it this weekend to do a drain, clean, refill and air-bleed.... the factory fill on my 2 year old mower was never done right and the mower had very little power pulling itself up hill. No way in heck I can see a small engine shop taking their time to carefully dissect a machine under warranty just to drain and refill transmission fluid. So I did it.
Today I took off that center bolt under the round thing that the blades bolt 0:02 onto. Do you happen to know that torque spec to put it back? Every time I turn it to tighten it it seems to spring, so I’m not sure there even is a torque spec. I’m just afraid of the blade falling off.
I hear you. I guess the older the mower, the more fragile the parts are? I just applied enough force to get the belt off and remove tension on the spring so I could get it off and on.
This is only a method to release the spring so you can replace the belt or cables. With the spring under load, other methods show prying the spring off, but I did not like that. Reinstall using the same technique to reduce the distance which will allow you to slip the belt on the front pulley. I would watch the other videos on disassembly first to get a complete overview, mine is just to release and reattach the belt while under the spring tension.
ua-cam.com/video/x1RdDAOipBU/v-deo.html I did not remove the middle pulley that the blades mount to under the motor, I did remove the blades and replaced them too. if you slip it off the back, with my technique, you can remove the belt without removing all the front blade/pulley/assembly. ua-cam.com/video/A_3hNACD6mg/v-deo.html There are many more, but the HR217 models vary. I also had a cable replacement and had to get the upgraded drive cable kit. but I did it years ago and dont recall now. I can look it up as I purchased it on Amazon, but it might mot be the same as your HR217?
You skipped 90% of the process, just getting to the belt is the hard part. Not sure this is an HRX217. does not look like mine at all. There must be variations in design.
There are many other videos out there for the step by step process of getting to the belt, I was just showing a technique I used to get the belt on/off and that damn spring tension.
@@TOM3684 I've only found 2...and they kind of suck. I'm not knocking your video but if you could post a few links with the disassembly/assembly process, it would be greatly appreciated. The ones I've found are very choppy and miss several steps.

even with the belt off, and my spring is on the other side than this one is. Spring in near impossible to put on
Hope it worked out for you!

Thank you!
Should of watched this video because it was winning but I got it. This is much easier
Thanks! I know, right. It took me a time out and a beer to find a better way!

No Sorry

Thank you! Yes, I was working on mine in the rain and thought "there has to be a better way"?
For the spring, I just used a hook style pick to pull it back onto the transmission
Thanks. Yes if you have tools that will work....its all about having the right tools for the job!

Blade bolt torque: 36 ~ 43 ft-lb; 5.0 ~ 6.0 kg-m (49 ~ 59 N·m)

You can break the fins on the transmission. Happened to me.
I hear you. I guess the older the mower, the more fragile the parts are? I just applied enough force to get the belt off and remove tension on the spring so I could get it off and on.
That upgrade should be free. I had to do that because you can not replace cable.
I agree, or make it easier to find as I found the cable but it was not the upgraded one that would work without the special adapter.
Details please

Yes, there are different versions.

My mower says HR217 on the front and you can see it on the video. There are variations of this model. I bought mine at Home Depot years ago.
