I saved the shoemaking for the final step of my Good Omens Aziraphale cosplay, just in case the time ran out. But, thankfully it did not! This pair of 1890s boots is based on an original at the Met Museum, with a few alterations to the uppers design to work better for the fit I need and the angel wing vibes I wanted. Though I tried to keep construction as simple and efficient as possible, I still needed to make a new pair of lasts to shape the shoes onto that will fit my feet. The 1890s had a very distinct low heel and pointed toe for only a few years, and it can't be replicated by other shapes!

"I wasn't going to make an entire new pair of shoes but I still carved out a beauty" is such a Nicole trait™️
I know the orange decoration on the shoes is supposed to just be a historical detail, but they honestly make me think those boots would have been a gift from Crowley, which Aziraphale claims to not be friends with and not care for them at all, but still wears and maintains every day.
Me (thinking 30 years in time): I wonder why my old nurse’s shoes squeaked so much. [whole hospital staff squeaked on quiet patient floors 1980’s]
Nichole: I’m using cork because it helps keep the shoes from squeaking…
Me: OMG THANK YOU!
My night shift shoes always squeaked!
1982 German hospital, my mother was in there for six week, the nurses wore clogs with wooden soles and heels…. Nobody slept well
Early 2000s. I went through seven pairs of all Black trainers/sneakers to find a pair that did not squeak on the floors during the night.
@@lauralake7430 The ultimate pain is when just a single shoe squeaks for some reason.
I cannot even imagine how comfortable it would be to have shoes that were made to fit my own personal feet! What a talent you have developed!
I finally figured out why I love these video's so much: the compilation bits that just show the process with music over them have the SAME feel as a Studio Ghibli film.
It just seems magical to me that a person can construct a shoe like this! In my world, shoes come to a store from a factory where a machine somehow spits out the finished item. Right? Prior to discovering your channel, I had never run across anyone building a shoe from sheet of leather to finished product!
I watch all your shoemaking videos and I probably don't really retain much information from them because I don't know the first thing about making shoes...but it still feels so special to have access to this very specialized set of skills and it makes me so happy that it's going to (hopefully) be on the internet forever for people to enjoy. They look great!
Yeess, totally agree. I daydream about being able to do all of this stuff and im glad it on UA-cam if any day I decide to act upon that dream
It’s fascinating and wonderful, isn’t it?!
It's watching a creation, and I find it therapeutic to see
at the beginning of the project you said you didn’t want to make an exact cosplay but something aziraphale would wear-and you are NAILING it! he would love these boots😄
I think as neat as bicycle boots are, these are for SURE the kind of boots Aziraphale would wear!
🦉Compare Nicole's painstaking and passionate craftsmanship to the drudgery of a modern shoe factory and you will see exactly why mass-produced products are inferior to the workshops of artisans.
And you can also understand why well-made shoes are so expensive.
@@mariaaguadoball3407 "The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. "
@@werelemur1138 Aaaaahh!!! Thank you! I love that you quoted this passage. It’s one I think about often. Also, it’s so tangentially appropriate, given the source material.
if I had to construct my own footwear, they would be flip-flops. and I deal with Wisconsin winters.
I love how your shoemaking videos demystify the shoemaking process. It still looks very skilled work ofc, but it feels like something achievable with the right study and time, as you clearly have! Such a beautiful end result, glad you had time to complete it!
Very sorry to hear you've had health problems. I feel for you, truly and hope you're feeling better. Thanks for this video, I love your shoe/boot making video's it's something I would love to have tried myself but since developing arthritis in my hands, heavy leatherworking is out of the question. The finished boots are so lovely and perfectly reflect Aziraphale's character, well done!👏👏👏
Watching Nicole make shoes, I feel totally vindicated in my decisions in the past , never to attempt to make any footwear except knitted slippers.
Your ability to make such gorgeous footwear is amazing Nicole! These turned out stunning
the shoes turned out so fun! i'm blown away by the skill this took
Nicole's shoe reveals are always a pleasure to see. These bespoke shoes are distinctive and yet appear comfortable. After wearing shoes made for your particular feet, I wonder if an event forced you to wear 21st century shoes how would that feel? Due to wonky ankles and even odder shaped feet when outside I am always in boots, whether short or medium or over the knee, it is always a boot. While I love a good gown appearance, watching the creation of a particular pair of shoes is fascinating.
It’s so nice when you have a loud family and then at night you can just lay down in a dark comfy room and listen to her voice talking about shoes.
I hope one day you come out with a shoe collection or a how to make kit. Always love your designs!
She’s the designer of American Duchess shoes. I’m dying to get myself a pair
I get so freaking amped when you release a new video knowing good and damn well I'm never making shoes.
I love your sewing and drafting but honestly your shoemaking videos are my absolute favourite thing to watch.
If you have feet that are differently shaped from each other, do you alter your lasts and make them asymmetrical for a better shoe fit?
-Chevette Girl
You can buy standard lasts and amend them to fit. If you look in Nicole's playlists she has several videos that go through the process. You might find this useful as a low cost experiment in setting out your actual foot shape individually: ua-cam.com/video/Cmn5QUeGBps/v-deo.html.
Yes, you would use different lasts.
I was really happy to see you making some 1890s shoes, I thought they were very pretty when I saw the original example in your 100 years of shoes video.
My cat sat here listening just as (if not more) attentively than I did- I think she thinks it’s ASMR 😂
I always want to wait till the end before commenting but I am usually so blown away by your work that I end up commenting half way through, just watching your precision and making your own lasts and everything is amazing
Finished boots are beautiful!!! Love the decorative detailing on the sides. I have to admit the nail-biting moment for me is when you have to take the boot (or shoe) off the last. And I also love how Bailey makes his appearance in most of your videos! 😍
So much work in making these boots; however, the finished effects really looks worth the effort.
I knew what you were making from the first split second of the preview. This is my favorite pair of boots ever!
Excellent work as always, love these little tidbits of information that you have too. :) If you're going to be doing a lot of dye work on leather in the future, Chuck Dorsett over at Weaver Leather's channel has a lot of great tips on it, that's where I head when I need to learn anything new for doing things with leather because I'm a visual learner.
I am in total awe watching this. The mere idea of making shoes is daunting to me and I’m impressed that you took on the seemingly monumental task of learning the art. Bravo. Looking at these 1890s boot styles, the first thing that popped into my head was to wonder is this where the fancy cowboy boots got their start or was it the other way around?😊
I will never bitch and whine about paying over $50 for a pair of quality shoes again.
nicole explaines why it would be complete madness to make shoes from scratch for this... then goes through said madness. I love to watch it. I love the result. but it worries me a bit. I don't want any of the creators I watch to choke on work. especially when they bit off more than they could chew and the stress could have been avoided... still.. I have to trust that she knows herself and knows what she's doing.
Making one shoe would give me anxiety... but knowing I have to make another, would throw me off the edge. Great talent.
I love to watch people who have preserved a difficult craft creating something special.
These shoes are seriously mind blowing! I love the last shape that you made for these, it’s so curvy and unique!
The final reveal instilled in me a powerful desire to go watch Jeeves and Wooster
The skill. Your video hides decades of skill. I've worked with leather, making trinkets but yours... OMG the skill. Very nice. Awesome! Bravo! 🤟🤟🤟
The boots are so on point for Aziraphale, really beautiful and they look so comfy!
This might be literally the most interesting thing I have seen on UA-cam in recent years I'm just going to have to watch every single one of your videos
I'm never going to make shoes, but watching these being made just made my day. So much work and the results are amazing. It's fantastic to see the process, so thank you for videoing it!
The whimsy in the reveal is so cute! As always, the history and knowledge you share is a bonus on top of your amazing skill and artistry.
I honestly love watching your videos on making shoes, if I didn't have about 10 or so other hobbies in my day-to-day I'd love to try making my own shoes. I've never had good luck with buying shoes due to them always attacking the backs of my ankles
You break down everything so clearly that I think I could do it if I apprenticed under you
i LOVE your shoe making videos!! theyre so nice to just sit down and relax to, the history you tell about the designs too is always so interesting
The more I watch you making shoes, the more fascinated I get, and the more certain I am that I will never make a pair of shoes! Thanks for walking us through your process

So beautiful. I’m looking forward to seeing the entire outfit.
Wow, that was amazing! They look really great, and I've never seen a shoe-making tutorial in such depth, so this was extremely interesting to watch. Now I want to learn making shoes too :D
Also, the colours are on point and they look really close to Aziraphale's shoes, but with a personalised touch. Just so cool ^^
Absolutely stunning craftswomanship! Beautiful foot ware!
Thank you! This is so interesting!! I would love a pair of these shoes!!! I really enjoyed watching the process as the town I grew up in was famous for it's shoes back in the day!
Ooooh exciting ✨
Truly amazing 👏 I really enjoy watching this and learning how shoes like this are made. Beautiful ❤
They're so cool! Amazing work, especially for a time crunch project!
I like these, Nicole! They're really pretty & they look really comfortable to wear😍!
Love watching you make shoes. the amount of detailed work is astonishing and must be so rewarding to go from design to to wearing them. They look really comfy too. A wonderful skill to have. Thanks for sharing.
I really like all your content, but whenever you make shoes, it's so riveting to me. It almost seems like magic, it all coming together, and this boot is the most beautiful pair of boots I've seen in a long time.
Just stunning! The skill, creativity, time & patience that goes into each pair you make is incredible. And the final product? Absolutely beautiful!
Always blown away by your shoe making content. It must feel like a hug for your feet to have shoes made bespoke. Bliss!
They're beautiful!
Lovely boots!
Nicole, you blow me away every time I watch one of your videos. You are talented in so many areas, and make lovely videos as well. Thank you so much. I learn something new every time I watch you!
Your shoes are so gorgeous! I am always amazed at the quality of your craft.
Goodness, you are spectacularly talented, Nicole. They're beautifully.
I love your videos so much - they are so informative but also so soothing and relaxing! I do find that my brain always breaks a little on the shoemaking videos haha - having a fairly large shoe size, the lasts and soles always look impossibly tiny and narrow and my brain cannot compute - but you always make these videos so fascinatingly informative. Thank you :)
What a beautiful pair of shoes! I'm am going to have to try shoe making one of these days.
The fact that this is you maximizing shortcuts is both hilarious and awe-inspiring. Very cool boots. As always, loved getting to see the process. Particularly loved seeing the last-making! Would really love to learn more about that step in the shoemaking process.
