I had a great aunt who would crochet a vest and other things for christmas. Always sent a card and check for 5 dollars for birthdays. I always felt special everytime and wore the clothes proudly. Found out later some of my cousins mocked her for her gifts. I think they thought they were being witty but I thought they were cruel. "Did you get the check for 5 dollars...hahaha" and yes we were in our 20s. I still miss that woman, she was larger than life and liked her perfume sultry. Bless you Auntie Alyce.

I once read about a man who gave his wife a new very expensive fishing rod for her birthday, that he wanted himself but couldn't justify spending the money on himself for (She wasn't a fisher at all, but he somehow convinced himself that she would benefit from him having it) So on his birthday, she gifted him a couple of dresses. He got the message loud and clear.

The girl who got jewelry is crazy, even the attempt to buy jewelry is so thoughtful and sentimental. I think 99% of women (many of whom have never had a man buy them jewelry) would be over the moon receiving that heart necklace, bonus points if he knows you well enough to buy something you like! Price doesn't even matter, I would be thrilled at a bead necklace he strung himself.

My favourite gift a man has ever bought me was this gorgeous Vera Wang 'love' heart necklace. It's so tiny but absolutely gorgeous. He abandoned his son and left me to pick up the pieces because he wanted a long distant relationship instead though 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I still have the necklace and I'd still wear it if my son didn't pull and snap the chain 😂

I almost cried this Christmas. My first job took the staff to lunch at the local fancy Italian restaurant, $100 bonus, and a $25 voucher to the store. My 2nd gave us $200 bonus (cash) & a Starbucks $15 gift card, & the managers of the department's gave us little gifts too. I seriously almost cried because working myself to death at my old job for 5 years never showed us this kind of appreciation. Everything they did was deducted from our paychecks.
It felt so wonderful to be appreciated.

last year I lost my job and had to move back in with my parents in my home town. I now work for a small family business that employees about 20 people and pays minimum wage. We get Christmas bonuses based on hrs worked/seniority. I've only worked there since May but quickly gained traction within the company, and my coworkers talked me up to the boss so much that I got $1,000 on my pay check extra as a bonus, which is more than I even expected. That was incredible to me, especially for a small business. I cried! I'm so so thankful to them for taking a chance on hiring me and providing an opportunity to get my feet back under me.

one year my mum forgot to bring my presents up when visiting, but remembered all my siblings ones. she felt so bad that in a panic she wrapped all the fruit from my own kitchen individually (like picked the bunch of bananas apart & each apple & tangerine).
it wasn't so bad as a week later when i visited hers i did get my actual gifts. but on the day i was feeling left out, so all my brothers tried to compensate by getting super hyped when it was my turn to open something & kept clapping & cheering for each new fruit for me to put back in my own bowl 😅
now it has become kind of a tradition where she always buys me something fruit themed (like scented pens or lip balms).

The very first christmas i was with my husband (thrn boyfriend) he put so much thought into the presents. One of them was a heart shaped necklace with diamonds, among other jewlery.
He said "i know you were necklaces but these are the ones i couldnt decide on, so you can have them all. I'm not very flashy, so i didn't wear it because of diamonds, but he was more interested in learning what i liked. I eventually made the heart (tunred around) into an oragami owl necklace that he got me a few years later. I say all this to say if you aren't sure, LEARN. If you care, TRY and ASK. I worked at a company where at Christmas we would have a white elephant gift exchange…but this was no ordinary white elephant. The owners of the company purchased all the gifts (well actually I did with their money😊). One gift that the bosses did buy themselves was a 60” tv and a PlayStation. There was also gift certificates for lift tickets to ski, spa day, night at the theater(dinner and gift certificate for theater to see play), and a kitchenAid stand mixer (that I was plotting how to get for my self) when I was getting ready to purchase that my boss called me in to her office and told me when I bought the one for the Christmas party I was to buy one for myself as a gift from them(I had to hide it) I still have it in my kitchen and use it frequently and am very grateful to have had such amazing bosses. They truly cared for all of their employees and even with the economic downturn in 2008 tried to give everyone a good Christmas. ❤

One year for Christmas, my ex husband's mom thought she was going to give me the worst Christmas present ever by not inviting me to the big family celebration at her house. It was just the opposite. It ended up being the best Christmas present. My ex was to be at her house by 7am (we lived about a half hour drive from her place). He was up at 5am getting 4 tired kids ready for the day and loading up the car with presents and such for his family. He didn't get home until after 11pm that night. And of course, the kids were really cranky. He looked exhausted when he walked through the door. It turns out his mom had him come over early so he could clean her whole house top to bottom and then after that he did ALL the cooking. And after dinner and presents, my ex husband ended having to stay at his mom's and do all the clean up. Me on the other hand, enjoyed having the day with no cooking, cleaning, and running after kids. I even got to a bubble bath and an afternoon nap!

When I was 13 years old, I had gotten a little chubby and was having some really unhealthy body image issues about my weight. For Christmas, my aunt gave me a dress, a pair of jeans, and a sweater... All in a size 2. I wore a size 14 at the time. She insisted that I try them on because she was sure they would fit. When I showed her that I literally couldn't squeeze into any of it, she acted all confused and said that my two cousins both wore that size, so she assumed that I would too, since we were about the same age. Then she cheerfully told me to go ahead and keep the clothes in my closet so I could wear them after I "finally get all that weight off." I'm an adult now and I haven't spoken to that aunt in several years.

      @fae206 2 роки тому +13

I honestly don’t blame you, that’s horrible. Your body is beautiful if you take care of it no matter what size you are and this is horrible for a thirteen year old.
It’s very different but one time I ordered a size fourteen dress from sears (when I was in my early twenties) they sent me a size four. The dress was beautiful but there’s a lot of difference between 14 and 4. The people at sears told me that they didn’t want to take the return even though I said I just wanted an exchange for the size that I ordered and the salesgirl asked me if I couldn’t just keep it because I ordered it online and it would hurt the store if I returned it there, I told them that it was their fault and I wasn’t looking for a return but an exchange so their net loss would technically be $0. I think sears works on commission or worked if it doesn’t exist any more but still sending someone a size 4 instead of a size 14 and them being hesitant on the exchange was really demeaning to me.

One of my bosses accidentally bought all of her employees alcohol filled chocolates. The problem was I was the only one old enough to consume it. She didn't understand why everyone wasn't taking them home. I explained to her that she misread the packaging, and they legally were not allowed to even handle it in her restaurant. She was nice enough to call all the parents and explain what happened. She also said she understood if they were not going to let them have it. All but one of the parents came and got the gift to take home for the teenagers to have.
There was another year my grandfather was placed in charge of buying all his grandkids Christmas presents. Normally Grandma bought them, but Grandpa insisted that year. He bought us all the same size single pair of blue men's size 8 socks. Yup, even the baby got a single pair of blue, men's size 8 socks. When Grandma found out, she snuck $20 in each pair, but told us all to leave the socks folded so we "didn't make a mess with our socks." Grandpa never found out. He was so proud of the job he did Christmas shopping.

When I was young we had relatives on my mom's side that lived a distance away. Might see them once a year at a wedding or funeral. At Thanksgiving they would send back a big box of Christmas gifts with another relative. It was always random things from a thrift store or something. As kids we were confused and disappointed. As teenagers we found the humor in it, and would save them for last. Some of my favorites. A "Favorite Dad" coffee mug. I was 15. A pair of size 13 foam flip flops. In MN. And a pair of red, yellow and green plaid pants. 10 sizes too big!
They're all gone now. Never mocked them, in fact, thanked them for the gifts when we saw them. To this day, we have no idea if they were trying to be funny, or just didn't have a clue. I mean, they didn't have to send anything. But, it provided us with a lifetime of laughs, memories and stories. My siblings have their own. Plus, I threaten to regift the pants to any of them that piss me off. Oh yeah, I kept them! Lol.

Why is this an anomoly of a story? This should be the norm!
I don't even know you and I am genuinely so happy for you that you have a job where you and your co-workers are valued and appreciated. And rewarded for your role in the success of the company.

The issue with gifting jewelry is you have to really KNOW someones style and likes, its a very intimate gift.
She might have liked a tiny necklace better than a "giant" heart. Other people would love that! And that is the point, it shows how much or little you know about the other persons taste.

My mother used to routinely give me clothing for Xmas - in HER taste & size. A boss at a non-profit I worked for once gave me a $15 gift card to a store I never shopped at that was going out of business (thus limiting the time frame to use the card). I processed her expense reports & saw that she included the purchase of my gift card so she could be reimbursed. Our budget was based on donations. Her salary was guaranteed, mine was hourly & was based on the amount of donations received, so essentially, I paid for my own gift card.

I think the worst Xmas gift I've ever seen was my dad giving my mom a wig from Goodwill. He bought it for her for one reason... It was on sale... At Goodwill. While neither of my parents was that wonderful, no one deserves that.
On a better note... Sort of. I tried pranking my girlfriend (long since wife) by giving her a frying pan, withholding the real gift of a beautiful herringbone necklace. She LOVED the frying pan as it was a very good one but was meh on the necklace... Which got hung on a drawer and broke that same week. 20 years later, we still use the frying pan.

Last year we were allowed to choose from any flavors we produced. This year, they actually stepped it up. Totally shocked me. We got free tickets (popcorn, 2 drinks, and 2 snacks) to a movie theater, 1 DIY gingerbread house, fancy corporate bottle opener (actually very nice looking), and (*drum roll*) a $50 gift certificate to a grocery store. I was totally blown away. For once something that didn't completely suck.

They drag the cases out years and they know that costs money that people just cannot afford. They also get more money on top of that bonus check if the child is labeled with a disability...thats why they often say a child has ADHD or bipolar disorder right away when they do not. Yeah, the executive director's daughter had opened some cookie franchise so now all the money we would have been getting was going to his darling daughter to send us inedible cookies.

@@carolinegrova8707 Attorneys are the worst. They like to flash what their money can buy, but cry poor mouth at the holidays. For Christmas one year my yuppie attorney gave me his used stair stepper. He even tied a recycled and drooping red bow on it. He also hadn't bothered to clean the thing. He stood there like an idiot with a huge smile and told me how "lucky" I was to get this stair stepper because it cost a lot of money (it didn't). He also was shocked when I didn't show gratitude for receiving his used gift. We shared space with a CPA and another attorney. They heard about my "fantastic" gift and came down to look it over. They berated my boss for being cheap and giving an inappropriate piece of used dirty equipment. My boss tried to argue his case that I was ungrateful and maybe he should fire me for not showing him gratitude. After all, he reasoned, he had just bought a new BMW, was building a multi-million-dollar home and times were tough.

My ex husbands company insisted on a family potluck Christmas party. Have your family bring food for everyone and then they did the gift exchange. In front of the kids, with out giving the kids anything. Kmart was just down the road so I drove over and bought some of those lifesaver storybooks. Enough for all the kids. I swear I spent more on the party than the company did

The employee bs “bonuses” are too infuriating to laugh about. Executive salaries and bonuses are so ridiculous when compared to their employees, and our taxes continually go to bail these bastards out so they continue to provide jobs, which they go ahead and eliminate anyway.

I work at a physiotherapy clinic as a receptionist and it's a privately owned business so most of us don't get big bonuses or anything but the clinic wide gift always include a free massage, a $75-$150 gift card (Depending on how long you've been there) to different stores every year. (Grocery stores, fast food, liquor stores etc.) Plus something festive like one of those hot chocolate mix/ mug sets. This year, my manager also got all of us hot chocolate bombs. Obviously a big bonus would be nice but I know the company just doesn't have that and the gifts are always so thoughtfull.

I find it bizarre that someone would find a heart-shaped necklace or other piece of jewelry 'tacky and gross'. I mean, sure, if it's weirdly huge or strange in some way, I dunno, maybe made of something odd, go off, then, but... that was a sweet little gold heart necklace and I am just confused that she had that take on it. *shrug* Each to their own, I guess.

I'm guessing she really doesn't like hearts, but she should understand that her opinion is not everyone else's. I mean, as I've stated somewhere else in the comments, if it were considered tacky and gross, why do jewelers make so many heart-shaped things, and why do they sell so well?

She sounds like a high maintenance girlfriend. Imagine being a high school kid and buying your girlfriend a necklace and she refuses to wear it because she hates hearts. I think she hated the penguin charm because another girl helped him pick it out.

This girl is just entitled and self centered. She got offended that hr bf wanted her to show off the gift he got her, and then she hated a penguin necklace that was from a nice retailer (either Brighton or Pandora) she didn’t get bad gifts, she’s the bad gift. And she clearly full of herself to think her opinion on jewelry is the end all be all

I would have liked the penguin and the heart. I mean trying to figure out what she likes is important, but I suppose it would depend on how long they had been dating. I'd appreciate it for sure either way... unless I specifically told them "I hate heart jewelry" and then they bought me heart jewelry. Someone has to like heart jewelry or they wouldn't make it lol

Wasn't a bad Christmas gift, as my Nanna (R.I.P.) had some brain damage that gave her dementia. But she once got me a bright yellow fluffy photo album with plastic pink hearts all over it. It was meant to be given to my cousin Joanna, but with her "issues", she got the presents mixed up. To not cause my Nanna embarrassment I accepted it, said it was awesome and still have it over two 1/2 decades later. My cousin Jo got my present which was a Lego set. Which I believe she also accepted and later put it together in front of Nana.

not a Christmas gift, but for my 5-year work anniversary. the HR team in my former company gave me (and a friend who was hired at the same time as me) a certificate made in MS Word that had WordArt in it. when we jokingly used them as a mousepads, we were written up by HR and complaints were sent to our manager because we were "not being grateful."

Not Christmas but around that time of year, one year I was going on a cruise with my maternal grandma. My paternal grandma must have told this family friend she worked with. Because she gave her a "dress" for me to wear to the fancy dinner on the ship. Grandma showed it to me all excited. It was a nightgown, not a dress. I said nothing. I did pack it for the cruise and I still have it to this day. Its a great winter night gown and I love it.

A couple years ago I got a gift from an old friend that was a book. A couple weeks after I was gifted it, she started to call and text repeatedly and tell me to pay for it cuz she needed the money. I ended up putting the book on eBay and when she said she wanted the book back. I messaged her the link to purchase it in my eBay shop.

I remember before our family Christmas parties, there was one time my sister and I spent a whole week planning gifts for the rest of the kids (we were like ten, and most of them were our age or a bit older). Some of them were toys we already had, but that was just under the circumstance that one of them had wanted it previously (we gave our younger cousin our brother’s old nerf gun (with his permission) because he’d wanted it for a while after playing with it when he was over recently). We even tried our hand at hand-stitching a pillow made from our dad’s old jeans in the shape of a J for our older cousin (we had our own pillows in the shapes of the first letter of our names, and we loved them, so we wanted to give one to him, and we thought it was better than a toy or something more childish since he was older). We were ten, but we tried harder than our parents.🤷🏼‍♀️

I worked at Half Price Books for almost 16 years and when I first started, we usually got a profit sharing check on the last day of November. Then we had a holiday party the second Sunday of December which included a Christmas bonus check usually given out at the party. We closed our stores 2-3 hours early on that Sunday and while a small thing, it felt like actual appreciation and a huge break in the middle of the holiday shopping crazy. Then one year for Christmas they moved the party to the end of January, which felt like a huge slap in the face and did NOT feel like appreciation at all. They also removed literally all of the best parts from the prizes to the decent booze to the good food and even the cookie baking competition. They just started using the same garbage catering company every year who made the same crap every year that was not that good. Still attended for a while to spend time with coworkers I liked, but eventually stopped going as all of the fun had been sucked out of it.
