THE REVIEW
I watch each episode with my own commentary, often pausing the scenes to get my words out without having to talk over the episode, and also to point out and analyze the show's art and animation. I have seen each episode already growing up, so these reviews are to compare and contrast the five categories listed below.
PLOT (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
The foundation of the episode. Uniqueness and overused tropes are taken into account, but it is also judged on how well it tells the story of the episode. An episode can score a 5 even with a basic/ cliche plotline as long as it has good pacing, worthy use of its tropes, and feels well-polished. An episode can lose points due to plotholes, uneven storytelling, and relying too heavily on cliches to do the work for it.
CHARACTERIZATION (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
How well the characters are written. Do they feel like themselves compared to the grand narrative of the franchise? Are the supporting or one-off characters interesting, or pure plot devices? Did the humor land? Did the actions and character motivations make sense?
VISUALS (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
Basically, everything that happens on-screen. Character Design. Animation. Backgrounds. Creative mechanics and solutions. If there is CGI or digital effects added, how well do they blend into the show, and were they used as an enhancement, or a crutch?
IMPORTANCE (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
This includes, but is not strictly based on, how important the episodes are to the current story arc (if there is one) or the general narrative of the Ben 10 Franchise. Points can also be awarded for how impactful the episode was, or how favored/ important it is to the general Ben 10 fanbase. I ask myself, "If I skipped this, would I be missing out on the 'Ben 10 Experience?' "
ENTERTAINMENT (Scaled from 1 to 5)
Pretty much the most important part of developing a tv show. You can be perfect in all four of the previous categories, but the episode can still be boring. On the flip side, the episode can be absolute garbage, but still an enjoyable watch. How likely would you be to put this episode on if you were in the mood to watch Ben 10?

Honestly, with how Ben was acting like his aliens in his human form might have been why the cooldown was in place, to make sure that the user knows the line between the aliens and themselves.
That seems pretty likely so he doesnt ruin himself mentally

Yeah I agree. Along with the fact that continued transformation can’t be good for someone’s DNA. Radiation for example does that and it’s effects are horrible, so it makes more of a point that the timeout function exists

I like the theory that Ben acting like a jerk to Gwen (or just in general) is one of the few ways he can regain some sense of normalcy in his life, much like how he plays up his cocky attitude while fighting to hide his fear. Which is why he always seems to regress back to how he acts towards Gwen in the first few episodes despite how much he and Gwen have gone through together. Like, Ben is very acutely aware of how close he is to dying or letting someone die, even if he doesn't act like it. So it very much could be some form of coping mechanism so he doesn't break down over every near-death experience.

It more inconsistent writing than anything else
He's actually really intelligent, otherwise he wouldn't be alive

I also like how Vilgax doesn't even ask Kevin how he tried to remove the Omnitrix, he just assumes it was as methodical as he was.
Like, I'd liked Vilgax explaining his Omnitrix removing process step by step and then Kevin just goes "I just pulled on it...Really hard."
And then Vilgax probably had an internal moment something along the lines “I have to partner with this idiot?”
“What are you, a petulant child?” “Yes.”
Now I'm regretting the fact that Vilgax and Kevin parted ways in the Null Void. Instead of having them become Teacher and Student or something like that.
He might have pulled it, but didn’t he also use his “draining power” at the same time?? I get the feeling that would give an edge in his, “pulling really hard.”
@@kazemizu I think he absorbed the Omnitrix by mistake, a combination of the Omnitrix's defense mechanism and Kevin already absorbing.

Gwen destroying the charms was at least somewhat justified (though she definitely should have kept the luck charm) since she felt they were too powerful to fall into the wrong hands.

@@daraghokane4236 That would probably be better. The main reason Ben doesn't try to destroy it is because it makes him feel special and he likes being a hero. But even if not, the omnitrix is nearly indestructible.
The fact that he gave the omnitrix up so quickly for gwen is amazing character growth. I assume in season 1 he wouldn’t have done this at least so quickly.

If you look closely in the Null Void battle, pay attention to the transition from Wild Vine to Heatblast. Ben doesn't just use Wild Vine to take on 3 creatures, he actually uses the 3 combined as a platform for him use Wild Vines unique anatomy to propel himself upwards while immediately switching to Heatblast to carry on the momentum. He took out 3 enemies simultaneously while being chased and seamlessly used them to continue his own momentum in the chase.
There's so many little things in just that 30 seconds of animation that shows exactly how skilled Ben really is with The Omnitrix.
Kuro Vilgax already saw all of Ben’s original 10 aliens and noticed that Kevin is a mix of those specific 10.
Yeah while he was had ben in his clutches he probably saw what was on the active playlist too.
Except the 11th alien canon bolt and alien of ghostfreak saga and many more...

Vilgax probably sees them almost everyday in space though, that's why it's so important that he noticed that they're bens aliens specifically
Kuro, Kevin is also part Ghostfreak, meaning he can make himself weightless.
That actually makes some sense.
Edit: originally I was gonna say that is no longer possbile due in ghost freaked out a DNA Ectonurite aka ghostfreak's started to build more personality and a mind of his own. And with this information. I thought kevin Eleven would have the similar experience. But given the fact that he is a fused abomination. The ghostfreak DNA wouldn't have much to do at all due too much dna cluttered up with each other.
And fly, and pull the tentacles out
And go invisible and intangible
Or at least partly weightless
That makes sense.

It's a good question: how much plumbers receive, i don't believe they work for free because they have bills to pay

To me, the rock formations in the null-void look like neurons in a brain. Really cranks up the creepy factor.
Thats exactly what I thought whenever I looked at the classic Null Void.....Really Scary.

@@darrellsimon4462 According to Azimuth, the only reason master control was locked before was the fact that of how the alien dna from continous transformations would corrupt the user of the omnitrix. So if Ben really did keep the master control as Ben 10,000 from this moment on, he would have needed to keep a check on how many times he transforms in and out of aliens

As a kid I always thought they were travelling on a simple wandering line across the country, I would have NEVER thought that they'd move around like a Final Fantasy airship and practically circle the earth twice lol
The fact vilgax recognizes Kevin's powers as omnitrix DNA is probably just because he saw all 10 during his fight with Ben. That's the only ones he knows are for a fact in the omnitrix. He was able to put two and two together
Also he was monitoring Ben over the course of Season 1.
And the fact he literally looks like all of Ben's aliens in one
Proof you can’t cut the Omnitrix off the arm, they went the effort to build a machine to remove it, instead of having Kevin cut it with his diamond arm.
Why can't you cut it off anyway?

The thing is that there isn’t much more. Ben turns into cannonbolt, fights some dnaliens and highbreeds, proceeds to do the same with upchuck and swampfire, then gets caught turns into humungosaur and nothing else happens. They had A LOT of possibilities to make it interesting, but it’s not, especially considering that should have been the climax of Ben 10 as a whole up to that point.
22:30 He thought “turn off master control.” Remember: he didn’t say “galvanic mecha-morph” he said “upgrade.” The watch didn’t require the species name in master control, so it probably wouldn’t require button combinations either.
Im pretty sure if he said “something something *self destruct.”* the dial would start turning orange for the countdown. And on the flip side, he said “don’t blow up” it would stop.

About Kevin being able to fly, couldn't he that he was using Ghostfreak's floating powers together with the Stinkfly wings? Ghostfreak is the third of the original ten that can fly, after Stinkfly and Heatblast.
yeah but Heatblast has to actually blast fire in order to give himself propulsion.

I always assumed that the reason Vilgax recognized those aliens as being from the Onnitrix was because Ben used all of those aliens against him.
My head canon is that Ben DIDN'T know how to disable master control but the omnitrix knew what he wanted to do so it did it. Like how it read his thoughts before
I feel like this video is a big reason for believing the Omnitrix has an AI, because when he said "upgrade" he turned into Upgrade, but thats not actually what the creature is called, it's a Galvanic mechamorph. So that means the Omnitrix understands the ailens have names
Yeah exactly, because he'll our phones and tablets can hear us 😂 and recommend commercials to us , so I'm pretty sure the omnitrix can hear ben calling certain aliens , certain names so of course the watch is really advanced AI too.

I like how kuro talks like a true fan. You can tell the passion he has for the series with the appreciation of small details while also acknowledging the series flaws and missed potential in certain spots. Really makes it feel like a breakdown/appreciation and critique instead of putting it on a high up pedestal free of critique.
Yeah, but he treats it with respect, because he's really in tune with the work of a writer, story board artist, director, ect... it makes it pleasant to watch and not just a trashing-fest.
6:30 Your reading of this scene is a little strange. Vilgax is shown to be incredibly intelligent. He starts berating Kevin for being some strange amalgam of random DNA, but stops himself once he realises that the thing those seemingly unconnected aliens all have in common, is that they are also specifically the 10 aliens Ben Tennyson has access to. Therefore Kevin must have some connection to the Omnitrix. Otherwise, it sure is an insane coincidence. Plus, we know Vilgax has been gathering extensive information on Ben's heroics throughout season 1, so he should definitely be very familiar with those 10 in particular. There is also nothing Vilgax wants more than the Omnitrix, so it makes sense that he'd act on a potential lead by immediately stopping what he's doing and inquiring about it.
Whether or not he even knows about the Omnitrix having other playlists is actually irrelevant here.
All this is apparant through the animation, dialogue and character histories.

This is also one of my favorites in the original!
Yeah, the ending kinda did undermine Ben's character growth. It also makes him look like a jerk. I mean, Gwen literally risked her life to save him AND gave him back the Omnitrix, and Ben doesn't even thank her. I love this series but the character development would have felt more organic if this was the moment when Ben and Gwen truly started to appreciate each other, rather than Secrets of the Omnitrix.
Yeah it’s truly unfortunate, this is the kind of character reset you would see on a really bad soap opera or a CW show.
@@thomasraines1396 Indeed. It was a missed opportunity for a really wholesome moment. This was the perfect time for the cousins to appreciate each other more and for the rest of the series we would've seen them argue a lot less. Especially since Gwen becomes a sorceress later on and aids Ben in battles more.

Like in "The Big Tick" where Ben saves the world as Cannonbolt and doesn't even get a thank you from either of those two.
@@earth2raine Not really. In The Big Tick, Gwen and Max clearly did appreciate what Ben did, they just didn't appreciate the arrogance he displayed afterwards.
One thing I found interesting was that the very first time Ben used master control, he transformed simply by saying upgrade's name (not the species name) and not even in the context of the alien. Really feeds into the theory that the omnitrix's AI is connected with Ben and began "learning" about him after being attached to him for so long.
He probably thought of upgrade subconsciously like there's some kind of word association, like if he called a dog a "wild mut" he'd probably be thinking of the alien in the back of his mind

Not the best explanation, but I think the way Ben managed to reset the Omnitrix is by re-entering the exact same code that he put in for Master Control. We know he has perfect visual memory, so he might have remembered it and just put it in really quickly when Vilgax and Kevin landed in front of him.
That would be a good solution, but if that was the case, he could just re-re-enter it and unlock Master Control again.
@@TheInkTank Fair point. Maybe they could have explained it by saying that once the Omnitrix was reset, the code for Master Control changed too as a form of security.

True that but the only thing is of the fact that is we never even seen Kevin used Ghostfreak’s power before by turning invincible or others like that in the Show nor in the other Ben 10 Series but I think it’s likely to say that he had the power of Ghostfreak when it he first turned into that Mutant Freak Form, that’s where Kevin started to go crazy & willing to kill Ben that Ghostfreak power made him insane like how Ghostfreak first got out from the Watch where he turned insane too & was willing to kill Ben in crazy ways which would explain a lot from Kevin back when he was evil as a Villain

When Gwen destroyed the Charms of Bezel, it looked so absurd to me that I created a fake memory of her trying to put them on before Hex tries to kill her with a blast and accidentally hits the charms instead.
The end with Ben getting the Omnitrix back is so iconic 🔥🔥🔥

The only instance I can remember where Ben is referred to as "Ben Ten" is in the generator rex crossover.
They also call him ben 10 in omminverse a lot
True but it's still also very weird there because by then he already had way more than 10 aliens. I'm thinking that since the first episode when he got the omnitrix, he mentioned he could switch between 10 aliens, so maybe he just decided to start calling himself ben 10 during that time.

@@StardustLegend It’s just because it’s a catchy nickname, it’s same reason why the show is still called Ben 10 despite having more than 10 since season 2 of the original series. Also, Ben never calls himself Ben 10, it’s the civilians and villains that calls him that, and he just accepts it.

Kevin can be able to fly because of the help of Ghostfreak's flight, and Stinkfly's wings make it faster maybe? Also, Vilgax knew the aliens were from the Omnitrix because he recognized that Ben had become most of them already in Secrets.

Looking back at this episode there's something I just realized... do you think Vilgax knew he was working with an 11-year-old? Like did he know Kevin was a kid? Cuz he met Kevin in his mutant form so I'm not sure if to an alien that still looks like an adolescent or an adult, especially since he's like part of all 10 aliens.

I love it when Heatblast uses the rock to fly on in OS, because when Alan Albright sucks at flying at the beginning of Alien Force, he and Ben have a bonding mentor and student moment. It makes it seem like Ben has actually grown up and matured and it sets up a way for Alan to look up to Ben (sadly this is never expanded on any further)

The scene deleted scene where Kevin didn’t have the Omnitrix in the capsule was probably supposed to be in the original airing. But they probably stuck with a sort of prototype for the scene because the final product either made the episode too long or the higher ups thought Ben crying made it seem too painful for public television.

I just realized Ben only transformed into Heatblast during the finale and The Big Tick this season. Kind of weird considering He’s one of his go to aliens.
I like it when heatblast flies normally, but when he uses the rock to fly on it allows his hands to be free to shoot.
2:10 - according to the pop-up trivia "Vilgax tried to teleport out of his ship before it exploded. The damage caused a malfunction that beamed him into space", but yeah they should showed that.
The fact that max has the nul void projector and never used it until now is just weird. It could’ve been helpful earlier in the season.
Fun fact the null void was a extra stage in Ben 10 protector of the earth where you fight most of the minions in the games . Including all the bosses except viligax and background is incredibly close .
Maybe for this season, we could have had an episode or two where we focus on Kevin, he meets Vilgax earlier, and we see a mentor/student relationship where we learn more about both of them (mainly Kevin) as they pick up tech to take Ben down.
yeah, this is by far my favorite series on youtube right now. I've never been a diehard fan of ben 10, but I've always enjoyed it. It's fun to vicariously re-watch the show through these videos, see what I missed back from the cartoon network days, and get your opinion on it. I especially like the animation advice and call outs, very educational and interesting.
I can't wait for the later seasons too because I watched even less of those as a kid, out of order, and always seemed to miss the big episodes that explained everything.

I always took the scene of Ben deactivating Master Control as something like:
To activate Master Control, you need to have a certain combination of inputs active, like typing in a password, but if you ever *un*type the password, or type in a different password to activate something else, it deactivates, it doesn’t have this for any of its other features because Master Control is... well, Master Control, the prototype Omnitrix isn’t mean to have it activated constantly, so it’s like a “Do or Die” option, meant to be used sparingly, and when Ben deactivated it, he just messed with it randomly, so going by the password analogy, he essentially deleted the password for Master Control, then slammed his face on the keyboard over and over, so it “logged out” of MC.
Personal theory, Kevin being able to fly is an extension of the "combine your powers" mantra he learned from Ben. Based on what i know about the physics behind animals ability to fly, generally speaking either your wingspan has to be ~double your body length (look at any bird of prey) or in general be adding enough to create enough lift to counteract gravity (like with bees, hummingbirds, and presumably Kevin using fourarms strength).
And in general, upon my recent rewatch you can pick out where most, if not all, of the "and then there were ben" variants (minus eon) all through the classic ben 10.
Also I like when Wildfire flies normally shows how strong his power is

Honestly I always assumed that for Ben to be able to transform into aliens by "thinking it" the omnitrix has to be capable of interpreting and responding to his thoughts. So to me I figured he just mentally told the omnitrix to "factory reset". Another interesting point this episode for me, was that the omnitrix recognized Ben's personal designation for the aliens, since he turned Ben into Upgrade by saying upgrade even though he wasn't thinking about the actual alien "Upgrade" when he said the word. You'd think the omnitrix would have the DNA filed under "Galvanic Mechamorph" or something, but it transformed him anyway. Just my 2 cents tho lol, excellent job on the vids and the comics, keep up the good work👍🏾👍🏾
Kevin’s flight is also likely aided by Ghostfreak since Ghostfreak can both fly and density shift
This is my favorite video series on YT. Ben 10 was my favorite TV show growing up and this series is one of the largest and greatest nostalgia trips I’ve had. I’m so excited for more of this every week.
Ben is just really smart and tactical and he has this same trait throughout the classic continuity.
While Ben might have been the first name it, “master control,” on screen, it isn’t all that crazy of a name. It’s very likely that Ben inadvertly had the same naming thought process as everyone else when he named it.
Or maybe it does have a different name but out of respect or that he doesn't care Azmuth just calls it mastercontrol

My take on ben "turning" off master control was that he just assumed it's like how the fusions worked, where he just needed to reverse what he did, so twisting it backwards would disable it like a real lock.
This statement doesn't really work because if he really remembered master control combination, he would have easily regain it by doing same pattern combination but he didn't. So this feels like Ben told omnitrix to reboot itself same as how he transformed into aliens just through voice or thought.
I always thought that Ben was Bart and Gwen was Lisa and after this episode they felt more like Luke and leia

Azimuth actually does explain the mistransformations, it's because ben isn't supposed to hot the omnitrix like he does, it's intended to be gently pressed in, and I think he also gave a reason for the timeout but I don't remember what it was

The timeline for this episode is unclear, it is entirely reasonable to assume that Vilgax could acquire this technology over the course of days or weeks before they actually went to fight Ben.

This is on the Ben 10 wiki "At the end of the second season, Vilgax is still alive, having survived the destruction of his ship by teleporting out just before the explosion, but having been frozen as a result. He is found encased in ice by Kevin. Discovering Kevin's connection with the Omnitrix, Vilgax decides to team up with him in another attempt to retrieve the Omnitrix, however, both are locked away in the Null Void dimension by the end of the episode.
At some point after that, Vilgax escaped the Null Void through sheer luck - happening to stumble upon a portal being opened on another planet", and yeah you're right Kuro I would like to see this happen at the end of season 1 to make the connection and have continuity.
In Secrets Vilgax sees Ben cycle through his whole arsenal of aliens at that point (the line up at this point except for Cannonbolt and Wildvine basically), so it’s likely he connects Kevin to the Omnitrix because they contribute to Kevin’s hybrid form.
Ben unlocked the master control once, what's to stop him from doing it again? It's kinda why I like the later episode "Ken 10" where he's just like "I used Grey Matter to hack my omnitrix!" Like why didn't Ben EVER think of that again?

About Ben zeroing out the Omnitrix, I interpret that Ben simply fidgeted with it, hoping for the best and just got lucky, much like how he did it in the beginning of the episode, and he was bluffing when he told Vilgax and Kevin that, only realizing he actually did at the end of the episode.
Ben even cried while the watch was being remove which is crazy considering his pain tolerance
You missed the part in the "iconic" Ben 10 transformation sequence where Ben has the tetraman momentum while transforming to grey matter and then he kicks Kevin on his head while crossing him just to transform into wildmutt so that's something which really impresses me and I'd like you to highlight it
it might just be called master control, that's a pretty simple name and it describes what it does, so Ben probably had a good guess.
7:05 I kinda figured Vilgax recognized Kevin’s parts as Omnitrix aliens because he had been watching Ben with robots and he fought him one on one. He had to have at least remembered 6 of the aliens Ben used and probably went off that assumption.

I know Zombozo would be because he might have been allowed to destroy the children psychologically in the show.
Ghostfreak too, since he would act as a manipulator and actually take the time corrupt Ben's mind.
Maybe even the hypnotist because he might have been allowed to use hypnotism to destroy his victim's filters to ensure that even after not being hypnotised anymore, they would still tear everything around them apart, forcing them to desperately seek to return to that feeling of peace hypnotism provided.
