  • "It's kind of like having a cocktail party on the internet." - Jenni Trent Hughes.
Sian Williams and Dermot Murnaghan are joined by Stuff Magazine editor Tom Dunmore and social commentator Jenni Trent Hughes to discuss Facebook, a social networking website that - since being made available to the general public in late 2006 - has grown rapidly in popularity. It's part of a burgeoning online trend known as social media.
What exactly is social media, what is it for, and why are people using it?

Deleted all my social media accounts back in 2017. Never looked back, never felt better. Stopped drinking 2 years ago, better diet, etc. turning 40 later this year and feels like I'm in my early 20s again. Massive calmness after adding some stoic thought processes to my life as well. Used to have big aggression issues (only at home when alone not in public or towards people) and other mental health issues but everything is gone which I never expected. I can even wear grey t-shirts in the summer because I don't sweat/feel anxious in any situation. Much of the world needs to adapt and change their lifestyles for the better - it genuinely is that easy to change things or your mind specifically to feel better (and my life is absolutely not in a good position right now but it's ok, no job, no car, no partner, no kids, terrible economy)

I have to agree on this but for me personally, Facebook died in 2014 when they started really going in on collecting people's data and did that experiment on it's own users where 50% of them were shown happy things in there feed and 50% were shown depressing things in there feed which in my opinion should be illegal. Been 10 years and haven't needed to use Facebook since. I kept UA-cam but even Google was a big dodgy back in 2014.

I don't think it was so much social networks that did it but rather the glass slab that was introduced in January of this exact year that caused modern-day brainrot. People say the iPhone was a revolution and yes while it is certainly helpful Jobs & Co had to know the impact of giving near billions of people power and access to the internet with something simply in their pocket. If we still had to lug around laptops to be able to look at stuff I think it would be quite different.

I have never social network sites and never will. I found it quite disturbing when the HR department at a firm I worked for asked a colleague why they couldn’t find me on it! Apparently the secretaries found out later that HR was spending a lot of time spying on their pages to gather information for the personnel files and to see if they mentioned the company.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

I deleted my account ages ago, soon after some idiot decided to replace all the useful stuff in my newsfeed with sponsored content, sponsored posts, adverts, pop-ups and posts of whatever meme that some middle-cousin of someone who liked a photo that was tagged by a friend's aunt of me a year ago just released. Then they turned-off in-site messages/chat and tried to force Instagram/Facebook chat down my throat. So, with a main newsfeed that no longer had any actual news about my family and friends and no way to chat or message anyone, I gave up and closed my account about 10 or so years ago and haven't looked back.

It's even worse now. Starting about two years ago, they stopped showing most people's posts or the posts by pages they actually subscribe to. Instead, they bombard everyone with unsolicited posts and pages they may like (instead of the pages they actually do like).
Facebook's own terms and conditions stipulate that personal timelines must not be used for advertising, but that's exactly what their own company is doing. -"Personal timeline" and "News feed" being exactly the same thing.

I've given FB a good go on and off since about 2008, but I really fail to see the use of it, what's the point, as this video says lol. You just get angry trolls bashing you for no reason other than to be mean, friend requests from people you don't want to be friends with or fake profiles, and meaningless junk, plus wastes your time needlessly.
I just use it now for being logged into apps and games, that's it.
