This brought back so many memories for me. My father was a petroleum engineer, and in 1968 our entire family was transferred to Kuwait for 8 years. It WAS very glamorous, everyone dressed up. Our mother always had us in matching dresses. It was elegant and gracious. We probably flew on every airline there was. We loved when the flight attendants gave us flight bags to add to our collection. We mostly flew TWA, BOAC, Pan Am, and our favorite, KLM. Occasionally on Air India or shorter flights on Kuwait Air. On Kuwait Air, you got a sandwich and hot tea no matter where or what time you were going. People acted within the rules of civility back then, as one should. We were always so happy to get back to JFK and Braniff would take us home to Texas.

I was born in the 90s and my mum took me onboard as soon as I could crawl. Even in the mid to late 90s, flying was still a nice experience. I was given picture books and toys, and we had a proper meal even for shorter flights. We would sometimes be given tidbits like eye masks, slippers and a small toiletry bag even for domestic flights. And all this was in economy. The last time I experienced anything remotely close to my childhood was when I flew first class from London to Edinburgh in 2019, with a proper meal and even pudding. Most of the times, it’s praying that my Ryan air seatbelt would hold until we get to the destination. 😭

Baby Boomers had it all: they lived like James Bond and flew Pan Am in style smoking and eating crab legs and steak with leg room. Then they told Millennials you get no food and you fly Southwest, American Airlines, United or Spirit and your luggage is lost and your knees are crushed the back of the seat in front of you.

If they turned this experience into an actual flyable airplane I would ride on it. You get on the plane they take off you fly around for a couple hours they serve you meals and then you land back in the same airport that would be an amazing experience. Same concept as a dinner cruise only in an airplane. I understand that the FAA would probably never allow that but it would still be fun.

I remember in-flight meals, comfortable seats, beautiful airplanes both inside and outside with the wildly, catchy paint schemes and logos. Flight crews who were attractive and professional and the whole experience was fun and memorable. Why can't the airlines go back to those days. Go back to focusing on the passenger and their comfort, rather than their wallet.

Somehow, the first class (and airline in general) experience downgraded from the 1970s. The price didn’t but the experience did. I’ve flown on a few different first class occasions from different carriers (BA/BOAC, United, and ANA). Yes the technological marvel is certainly increased but the overall aspect and space definitely decreased, which sucks since it hasn’t gotten any cheaper or anything...

    • @loricojocari8847

It has gotten much cheaper. Back then you had to be well to do or a business man in the 60’s. Flights cost in today’s money around 500-600.00 and now you can jump on a flight for 100 bucks practicality. I would also like it to come back from today’s standards and pay more for a better experience.

Where are the tray tables? Even first class had them back then.
Keep in mind that this is all prior to the deregulation of the airline industry. Its when the government had many rules on pricing, routes, etc. Its when airlines treated passengers more like real people and less like cattle as they do today. Its where men wore suits and women wore dresses or pantsuits. Of course the passengers of today are at fault too! Wearing almost anything they want and demanding things and speaking rudely to inflight and gate personnel.
Its both totally ridiculous and sad how people act these days on an aircraft. Do they act that way in there normal life. I guess its true that Americans make poor travelers to other countries!

They could have re-created all the different airlines, one night, the plane is a Pan-Am, the next a Northwest, then a TWA.

When Pam Am died, the delights of flying went away with it and now left with budget economy classes as the new norm!
