Vishu Kani is a significant tradition for Malayalis during the festival of Vishu, symbolizing the beginning of the spring season and the astrological New Year. It’s believed to bring good luck and prosperity for the coming year1. The term “Kani” means “that which is seen first,” so Vishu Kani refers to the first auspicious sight on the morning of Vishu2.
Here’s a brief overview of the significance of each item in the Vishu Kani and how to arrange them:
    * Coconut: Represents the divine presence of God.
    * Betel leaves and Arecanut, golden cucumber: Symbolize prosperity
    * Yellow Kani Konna flower: Associated with Lord Krishna, signifies blessings and joy.
    * Kanmashi (Kajal): Stands for warding off evil and protecting the eyesight.
    * Raw rice: Denotes wealth and fertility.
    * Lemon: Used in worship, signifies good health and persistence.
    * Golden cucumber: Symbolizes prosperity.
    * Jackfruit: Reflects the seasonal harvest.
    * A metallic mirror: Encourages a positive self-image and reflection on personal growth.
    * A holy book: Represents knowledge and wisdom.
    * Cotton dhoti and coins: Indicate wealth and material prosperity.
    To arrange the Vishu Kani:
    1. Clean your home and the area of arrangement.
    2. Set up a pedestal and cover it with a yellow cloth.
    3. Place the idol of Lord Krishna and decorate it with garlands.
    4. Fill a brass vessel (Uruli) with items like rice, lemon, golden cucumber, jackfruit, and a mirror.
    5. Arrange the rest of the items around the vessel.
    6. Light a traditional lamp (Nilavilakku) to complete the setup3.
The arrangement is done with care, usually by the eldest female member of the household, on the eve of Vishu. Early in the morning, family members view the Kani with closed eyes, believing it will bring them good fortune throughout the year
