It's a cold reality that hits as a writer when you figure out that you are only the first step in a process that gets a story to an audience. It's a relieve when you figure out that the rest of the steps are all trying to get the best product to the audience. If you work with "good people," they'll get your story to the audience - and most people are "good people." It's not been my experience that a script was gutted on a whim, there's a reason for it. Best thing she said, "they may know something you don't know."

Yeah, but I guess it depends on what kind of a deal you make (talking about feature projects). I don't think she's right with the whole, writer is the first person out of the picture. That's just dumb! I don't doubt for a second that she's talking from experience, but it doesn't make it any less wrong in my inexperienced opinion. Writer, especially the main in case of the and, and scenario, could be a major contributor throughout the process and a helping hand for the director. No matter how good the director is, why would he send packing the person who knows the story best. Now if that person turns into another crowing cock send him packing and crow away.

Wrong: The answer is heart, it's something you can't be taught in school. It's inside of you. It's what makes your script come to life.

Um, what's the difference between story writer vs screenwriting vs screenplay (screenplay writer, is there something called as screenplay writing?)
And then there is a writer as in dialogue writer who writes the characters' conversational dialogues isn't it?

When she mentioned how the screenwriter may take offense when asked to make changes... due to location or actors. This is the main reason, I’ve never submitted a script for a read. 🥺

Once a network buys your script, it’s their property to change. Especially for branding or other reasons. Never thought of it like this

However, I believe us writers should not be so quick to change something because of a note, but be open minded to consider how to improve the issue or areas around it, with limits, especially if same feedback is repeated by more than one person. If we decide to continue without changes, then be ready to politely justify. I like to try first and then if my instincts say stick to original then I will.

It's surprising how easily I took on the idea that movie making is a team sport. I know squat about lighting, actors get paid to take what the writer imagines and bring it to life, and I know for damn sure that somebody else can do a better job with a love-triangle-subplot antagonist than I can. No blood, no foul.

This is rather discouraging to hear to be honest. I thought the screenplay was a respected piece of the filmmaking puzzle but it seems like investors (with no creative intention) and directors can change it according to their agenda. I understand we cannot baby our work but after it's all said and done, if it no longer resembles the original vision the screenwriter intended, why even become a screenwriter at all? Is the joy of creativity finding work arounds to incorporate the higher up's notes into the screenplay while still maintaining a sense of your original intention?

In the advice here, on givin' room for compromise, she also stated that there is also the room for you doin' well to finance Your own film, should you find other views bein' inimical to your expectant vision🤷🏽‍♂️

I think it's better to become a writer-director instead of being just a writer, as you retain a little more creative input. Although you still have investors and the higher-ups at the studio to worry about...

Become a writer-director or a executive producer (show runner). It'll be extremely hard to do and most people never get to have those positions, but nothing worth having comes easy... So don't be discouraged

I'm feeling what you are feeling too. But you have to determine that some of your scripts will just be sold and out of your hands to help you build capital to produce the ones you want to keep. Either way, you gotta make some kind of money. I have decided that there are some scripts I have written that I must just have to sell to get my foot in the door. The ones I don't want to sell I don't talk about. My goal right now is to build capital for independent producing. Maybe if you can see it like that it won't be so painful to let go of the baby. It's hard because we love our adopted babies too.
