To me a writer writes for themselves first. Enjoy telling the story to yourself. If you are entertained then that's what matters. If your lucky someone else will also like the story and want to show the world.

It’s fine to write “your baby” first if that’s what ignites, fuels and compels you to write. Listen to your heart. What’s deeply meaningful to you can result in a better story.
Many screenwriters become directors because they want more control over what they’d written and they don’t want their name on something that bombed because other people had made it unrecognizable.
If you want more control, write for television rather than for the big screen.
It’s easier to submit “your baby” if it was composed as a craft-learning experience.

This is great. When I got into production I thought I wanted to be a Director or DP. When I actually learned what a producer did I realized it was right in line with my past experiences and that changed a lot for me. I think it's important that people really study the different roles in Production to find out what they really want to do and not just look at what may seem like a cool job or position of power. Love these interviews. Thank you Film Courage.

I really like listening to Shannan. Her enthusiasm, her intentions of helping, she seems nice. I am currently in the middle of introductory virtual classes with film school (we couldn't get the face-to-face class started because of covid-19) and I'm hoping I learn everything I need to be -at least lol- GOOD. Even though I haven't had a single screenwriting class with a teacher or pro I try to learn by myself and absorb everything I can, so your channel is very much helpful. Wishing every member and subscriber a happy and successful path to their dreams!

My dream is to be able to combine acting with writing so you get to live your own vision and as a matter of fact if you practice writing on professional level and put in a lot of work into your speculative writing you might eventually be able to "Direct" the movie from the pages if you made the director fell in love with your vision... That was the case with "The Social Network" written by Aaron sorkin when the company originally decided to cut down the script but the director David Fincher refused to do so and insisted on producing the script as it is.

Great point about "selling your baby". I see some script ideas as ones that I'm willing to part with. When dealing with Hollywood, they are gonna take that baby and change it. There aren't that many directors like Antoine Fuqua that will bring the original writer to set for rewrites.

Here's a question for film students/teachers, filmmakers, and those in the industry, that's been frustrating me - What IS "good"?
Perhaps it comes down to different philosophies from one person to another, but -
Is a script/film being "good" or "bad" not an extremely SUBJECTIVE thing? That's what I have heard over and over - that there is no scientifically correct way to do it - it is art. So who gets to decide the quality of your script? Isn't it up to whatever given individual is reading it or watching your film based on it? Isn't there simply no "correct" answer in terms of a film or script's quality (characters, plot, etc.)? Sure, there are conventional things like structure, but I'd argue you can bend some of those "rules" as many successful filmmakers do. So what is the deal?

    • @nerdock4747
      @nerdock4747 6 місяців тому

After loads of research on screenwriting, I can confidently answer:
"A good concept" is not the same as "presentable to a producer". "Good" in this context, translates to "presentable and professionally crafted".
Yes, each idea will have a different audience (the subjectivity of art you mentioned) but from her professional lens, a good screenplay is one that is polished, has clear story beats/direction and tells the story in a way that's easy for the reader to follow.
Whether the material itself is interesting or not is up to the writer, you can have the most perfectly crafted script in the world, but the premise isn't very interesting.
It's basically: Is it a good story told badly, or a bad story told really well?

And that's why the industry is at the state that it is now.
I recently watched Malignant and I was thinking "who the hell wrote this mess?". Well, probably nobody, it was first a good script and after countless rewrites from different writers, it became this Frankestein of a story.

It’s weird reading this because that movie is EXCELLENT. Didn’t see it as a writer but as an audience. I really liked the concept and the plot. And at the end of the day that’s the goal for every writer, writing something that audience feels.

I think the experience one gets not knowing story structure and just putting together a sequence of scenes is invaluable. Finishing the first screenplay is invaluable (as to bolstering one's confidence). Your work will be garbage. When you are serious about doing it right, learn craft.

For a long time, I had been thinking I wanted to be a writer. Nope, I never wanted to be a writer, I wanted to tell stories, and that's the reason I'm a visual storyteller today. I have to know some tools that writers use, like structure, pace, form, etc. However, I'm NOT a writer. Never thought about me working in the movie industry, but if I was invited to work in this industry, I'd be a film editor, slicing and sewing scenes, probably. Not a director or a writer.
"Are you writing your passion project right now?" YES!
"Do you feel you have the skills to execute the idea?" YES! People pay me to help them with their projects. I know I can do it for mine. And when I don't know how to do something, I outsource the task or make a partnership. And I never forget that done is better than perfect.

I'm a professional writer at the bottom though working on telling people what I can do. I'm currently working on 2 screenplays based off of 2 different stories 2 people gave to me. Love what I do. Learned a lot from Shannan though. Great video. Need to let the script speak fpr itself sometimes though. I feel I put to many "directors notes" in my scripts. Is that a problem with screenwriting?

Then Michael Cimino comes along, with his calling card script, which the studio not only purchased but engaged him to direct: 'Thunderbolt and Lightfoot' got made. Okay, technically to answer the question, Yes... Yes, I am...
However, full disclaimer up front... I'm a Game Master, currently in the beginning throws of a passion project, so I'm world-building for a Steampunk Setting for Gurps... A Role Playing System. (lolz)
I can say, however, for those who wonder what it's like to create in a collaborative situation, there's NOTHING like TTRPG's. Pick up a few books to master a system, just pick one... literally any one that you read the "blurb" about and think "cool"... and give GM'ing a shot. Build your world, plots, monsters and relationships (Like the Necromancer obviously rules over Undead)... AND find some Players (dime a dozen right now) and throw a game together...
VERY QUICKLY, you're going to come to realize that all the planning in the world you've put into this huge elaborate Campaign... is out the window. You'll be "off-book" in a matter of minutes (if you're lucky) and forced to knit together the plots and sub-plots you'd written in a background situation (or just burn the pages and follow along as the Players go)... You're incredible work will be twisted and changed and turned upside down THE MOMENT it reaches Player Characters!
No, the Players do NOT hate the GM. They generally love their GM's. They don't destroy our plans out of spite or for some sadistic glee. It's the nature of the Game... No plan EVER survives first contact with the Players. They don't know what you've hoped to put together. They have no way to know unless you're trying to "railroad" them into your picture...
BUT then if you "embrace" the collab... It's liberating. You build the "Big Bad Evil Guy" and his whole veritable army of underlings, mooks, and mazes for monstrosities... AND then live to tell the PLAYERS' stories... Pull them together and get their stories out to intertwine and bind as they crash and bang and wander amok through your world, and it's SOOOOoooo much more fun. It can create some of the wildest and greatest stories ever... stuff you'd have NEVER thought of on your own.
I've been a part of a few scripts (Theatrical... I live not so very far from THE Abingdon Barter Theater)... AND I can promise you, as you write out your visionary script... The MOMENT it reaches a Director's hands, it's going to start to evolve and mutate... running hopelessly "off-book" just the same as my Players take off with my Campaigns.
While I would never expect (nor frankly recommend) a proper "full" RPG Campaign to be turned directly into a movie or series... I'm confident the experience of watching your own work get smashed down and sideways and then built back up (provided you let it) by the Players is a GREAT way to learn that prerequisite detachment... To become able to "let go" of your "baby"(ies) and watch them take on a life of their own.
You kind of have to have a "slay the writer" perspective when writing for elaborately collaborative works like theater or cinema. "Nature of the Beast"...
If you DO want a "quick start" recommendation, I'd go out on a limb and suggest D&D. Fifth edition has been drastically "streamlined" so much simpler than it was in 2e (my most played edition)... AND with "Roll20" or "Runescape" available FREE online, there are quite a few "D&D Knock-off's" out there to pick through on a budget... If you're a fan of Sci-fi, "Star Wars" has an RPG... AND if you'd rather something Noir or fundamentally "Horror" or "Suspense/Thriller", Call of Cthulu is available, to satisfy investigating and running and screaming and even going insane... There's literally something for everyone in RPG's. ;o)

I'm in the middle of writing my first script, it's a movie that's meant to be the start of a cinematic universe. I know I'm kind of jumping the gun with this idea since its my first script, but it's the kind of extensive story no one's really tried yet.
I know I could probably make this story into a book, comic, or graphic novel, however this is the kind of story I believe needs to be seen on the big screen or at least on a streaming service as a full length movie as I feel anything else won't do the story justice. Shortest script in the word: A horse walks into a bar and the bar man says "Why the long face?" We have characters, a location, a beginning and something happens at the end. You are telling a story, just like what your idiot boss did or said today. It is all about story. STORY STORY STORY. Never mind camera angles or special effects. YOU ARE JUST TELLING US ALL A STORY. That is writing. Period. If you have got a great story you can shoot it on your iPhone and people will watch it...and love it. The only mistake you can make is...you don't have a good story. Period.

it actually sickens me to hear about the pyramid, not surprised of course artists always starve because the people with the money are always willing to exploit them and take what they have to make it their own, wonder how many movies would be better if the writers had more say in their own work. but of course its always profits over people no wonder there is so much garbage movies. i was a costumer with a degree in fashion and patternmaking, not one costumer i met knew how to even sew a button on a shirt, let alone draw a costume and no clue about historical precedence, just a lot of rich producers daughters or girlfriends that liked to go shopping for their new wardrobe at the expense of the movies budget. no wonder we adore master paintings and architecture years later... we miss the artist not the guy who commissioned or bought it!

I have no interest in being part of the process. I'll be more than happy just to sell a script and let them do whatever they want with it. Frankly at this point I'm proud of myself just to finish my first draft. That's a win!

Well fuck a duck! I would definitely not try to bogart the filming, but i really think i could help. Im an artist too so much of the visuals of my work are already in ny head. If the peoduction ran into a problem, id be there to help out. Although in my case i would hypothetically be too busy writing the 3rd book to get too involved in the minutia of filming.

    TLDR
She just took 9 minutes to say "if you sell a script someone will likely change it"
There are many different jobs involved in making a film.
    You're welcome

    Dear Film Courage,
Good morning from my proud current Israeli hometown of Jerusalem Israel. I hope you are all doing so well every day. I am writing to tell you with sincere love, kindness, appreciation, and gratitude thank you so much for daily inspiring my life-saving Mobileye Intel startup career success story where I daily save lives from car accidents and my Oscar Academy Award winning victory moment and my creative writing work. I have a inspiring true story I want to share that, from the bottom of my heart, I know will inspire and empower broadcast news anchors, reporters, and journalists worldwide, Ms. Demi Lovato, and my inspiring life role models.
My name is Mr. Jonathan Trauner. I am originally from Miami Florida. I turn twenty six years old this upcoming May 15th 2020. At ten years old I broke a wooden fire karate board in New York to earn my second degree black belt, before getting diagnosed with Autism in high school. In spite of my Autism, I graduated from Miami Beach's RASG Hebrew Academy High School in 2012 and from Baltimore Maryland's Goucher College in May 2016 where I earned my BA in History. Following college, I completed global abroad programs in Israel, which included my working as a landscape photography archivist for the Israel Museum of Jerusalem and volunteering on one of the largest archaeology sites in Jerusalem. Today
I save lives every day from car accidents and car collisions for Mobileye Intel, Jerusalem's largest safe driving tech innovation company. My greatest dream come true is winning a Oscar Academy Award to show Mrs. Gal Gadot and the world that having Autism and a disability will never stop us from achieving the impossible dream. Mrs. Gal Gadot's main makeup artist Mrs. Sarah Brock's two eldest sons with Autism live loving and beautiful lives and they live with endless love, kindness, gratitude, empathy, courage, and hope in their hearts.
    Wishing you all the best,
    Best Wishes,
    Mr. Jonathan Trauner

My mother Mrs. Sara Trauner who believes I will win my Oscar Academy Award every single day lives next door to Mrs. Jennifer Lopez and Mr. Alex Rodriguez in Coconut Grove Miami Florida. Mrs. Leila Sbitani, one of Mrs. Emma Stone's beloved close friends has no doubt, I will win my Oscar Academy Award in the near future and I will make the world proud.

Im sorry lady... But producers are NOT artists... Youre extremely wrong with that... Producers are technicians/ruiners of art... Just pay for the production and let the REAL ARTIST, the director, do his thing...
