  • Interview with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) on their proposal for the Walrus-class submarine replacement program. The German shipbuilder is proposing a submarine based on the future Type 212CD (already ordered by the German Navy and Royal Norwegian Navy).
    =====================
Holger Isbrecht, head of NL submarine replacement programme, answered our questions:
    - What are you proposing to the Royal Netherlands Navy ?
    - What is the share of local content ?
    - Is there a key design feature that stands out ?
    - Is your design future-proof ? For example, can it conduct seabed warfare operations ?
The interview was recorded during NEDS 2022 on 17 November 2022. (NEDS stands for "NIDV Exhibition Defence & Security" - NIDV stands for "Netherlands Industries for Defence and Security").
During the event, Naval News interviewed all three contenders as well as the head of DMO (Defense Materiel Organization, the procurement office) about the Walrus-class replacement program.

I can not even begin to imagined the quality of technologies that will go into this submarine. We are talking decades of experience crammed into that small hull.

Would not be surprised if the Dutch choose this since the Germans chose Damen for its next frigates.

Forget it as SAAB and DAMEN are building the next generation of Dutch submarines using Dutch experience know how and Technology with Swedish Experience Know How and technology .
Germany is a brown water sub builder . Naval a nuclear sub builder , and both designs need tons of reworking to make it remotely compatible .
The only design left the Saab Damen design .

@@marcusfranconium3392Saab and Damen can't build subs. The Dutch ask for a very specialized sub. It will either be the French or the Germans. Probably the French. The Swedes are amateur hour. Sorry, but it is true. Not even comparable, sadly. If the Swedes are smart, they abandon Saab subs and just buy from their NATO partners. Yes, Germans are brown water, French are blue water. But Swedes are no subs. Literally nothing. Just design plans. On top of that, the Australians already paid 1 to 2 billon to develop a diesel variant of the Barracuda. There's no way Saab can even come close to that. It is literally comparing a drawing of a Lada from the 70's with an actual Mercedes coming out of the factory right now. Saab shouldn''t even have been in this.

Interesting, I am glad TKMS has open up to Naval News on design n offering as Australian we didn’t get hear any information on TKMS offering bid on Australian future submarines competition. It would interesting to see what TKMS future support they have in design n maintenance.

Were the Dutch to select this class, then Germany, Norway, and the Netherlands would have very similar submarines. Italy also has a variant, so that adds to that logistics and training network.

navies around the world could do with a slightly larger variant of the Type 212 CD & 218A class of submarines . . . designed & built by thyssenkrupp Marine since the 1990s . . . for e.g. a fleet of 10 brand new Type 212 CD class 6,893 ton (8,202 ton loaded) stealth guided missile fast attack submarine powered by cutting edge iSMARTFuelCell Integrated e-AIP marine propulsion system . . .

I never knew this until recently but it turns out most of Nazi Germany's productive capacity during the war went towards building submarines and airplanes. It did not go to tanks or land forces which was a quite a surprise to me.
Germany basically lost the war at sea and in the air.

And barracuda is well barracuda 🤷 no idea what to say to it

The Dutch want to cross the Atlantic and be able to take out Venezuelan ships and air planes with no local harbour support. In case the Dutch islands just off the coast of Venezuela get attacked. The normal German Norway sub is a purely brown water sub.

This interview reminds me of an old joke about the difference between the sales philosophy of America, England and Germany. Ask an American company about their product and they send you a catalog. Ask a British company about theirs and they send you two sales guys to sing its praises and entice you to sign a contract. Ask a German company and they send a couple of engineers who say “where do you want us to install it”!

Saab and Damen both never build subs during the time you have been alive. It is a complete nonsensical wild card. Like buying a car from a vacuum cleaner company. You'd be insane to do it.
