I worked with Tsui Hark's team for several years (not on this movie) but I know this entire scene was choreographed by Hung Yanyan (the tattooed guy). Because the shooting schedule was behind Tsui Hark sent these two guys and some cameramen to makeup a fight and shoot the scene themselves. Hung Yanyan later became a professional fight choreographer for other movies and also was Jet Li's stunt double for a while.

And yes Huang Yan Yan is the choreographer, but he asked for it, cause Hark apparently wanted it to look real in some way and didn't want a choreography. But Huan got knocked out twice and said he can't keep going like this.

It's totally shot like a Japanese anime and I love it's execution! Tsui hark does every kinda camera angle!! But supposedly he didn't film this scene and it was the bad guy that directed it.
I've always known that Tsui Hark had dynamic but readable fight scenes; I don't get why this one is so chaotic and hard to follow. It feels unlike him when it comes to the "readability" of the shots.
Yes. It is hard to follow the fight scene in this movie. The choreography of the climax fight looks awesome. If only it was a bit more clearer would've been awesome
Tried to buy this twice back in the old video days and then on DVD. ON both occasions that picture quality was awful and I brought them back. I thought the video was faulty but the replacement was exactly the same. Is this available in a re-mastered version? This is one of the best modern martial arts movies, a masterpiece really.
