I think this is a great video. Information says that rhubarb is fast and not to start seeds too early from frost date. But you show the growth of 2 weeks and then 3 months. That's a good visual. Thanks!
I don't live in a wet climate usually...but the past two years we had lots of rain, every day or two, and my rhubarb rotted, so if the climate change are here (Quebec, Canada) to stay I should just make a mound like you said. Thank's David, you might have solved my (new) problem!
Hello David Thanks for sharing, what are the names of the green round plastics that you put round the rhubarb to deter slugs.. cant seem to find any here in London
I know how to plant the seeds, I just want to know how to harvest the seeds to plant next year. I have been told you just plant the seed head but as a gardener, that just doesn't sound right. Should they be hung upside down to dry first? I am in Northern Wisconsin, what is the time line for me to plant them?
Rhubarb seems to be one of those plants that makes its own rules up so I was wondering when was the optimum time to plant the seeds to grow them on to seedlings. Would it be early Spring or would you wait?
Hi Aaron :) April should be fine. I found it takes a much longer time to develop roots at the very early stages. But one could grow it much sooner, if you had a glass house :)
I planted a young plant this spring and was advised by my dad to not eat it this year but let is die off and start using next year....what are your thoughts on this?
Hey! I read about this, you don't harvest the first year and the second year sparingly. This is because the plant is still young and a bit sensitive and when its fall the plant puts all its energy from the plant above ground to the roots to survive winter, so when you harvest in its first year you basically take the energy from the plant and it wouldnt survive the winter but when its a little older it will survive because by then the rootsystem is way bigger and it doesnt need that much energy from above ground. I hope this made sense :)
I germinated them using the small cold frame I made and then stuck them after that out on a low roof to grow on. This was so they are protected from slugs :)
Thanks :) I never know what videos to make. Or rather what people would like to watch or learn. Will keep it in mind. Ideas for videos always welcome by all. Cheers David.
It depends on if you want them to grow in one place or several. Two to three feet apart or more is good. Add lots of compost to each planting hole and plant them down 5 cm. The hole should be two feet wide and compost needs to be mixed well with the soil.
Thank you. Someone bought 2 packages of 3 each for me to plant. So I have 6 small crowns. Is there an overcrowding issue to plant more than a certain number in one spot?
There can be Cathy, in the future if planted to close but then you can separate the crowns out and replant. If you have them 2 - 4 feet apart you should not have any problem. If you add enough nutrients and from time to time some mulch once they gotten bigger, that will be all the feeding you will need to do. You can always add farm yard manure every other year too, for a really big harvest.
I live in Israel and have been trying to grow rhubarb in pots on my balcony - the seeds i ordered (from ali express) looked like poppy seeds and grew into a tall plant with teeny been pods with more of those seeds. so where can i get true rhubard seeds that will ship to israel. I am from Canada and am in my 60s and thats why i like/eat rhubarb - i dont think the younger generation even know what it is. lol

I know how you feel. Nothing like getting into the garden and seeing it all grow and being part of it all.
Thank you very much - would you have a suggestion about the amount of sunlight these plants need?
Thank you for teaching me about rhubarb. I did not know they needed mulch.
Never had Rhubarb, how does it taste, do you recommend it. Cheers.. thumbs up. Dave
Thanks for the video. I just have a few rhubarb plants but every year I have at least one that produces seeds. I'll definitely try this next year.

I would transplant them to the ground in the fall when it starts to rain so that I don't need to water them. Mulch them to let them overwinter better.
I have never been lucky enough to grow from seed have a blessed day

What do you feed rubbarb with to make it grow,
What are the collars for?
Thanks for the video.
Did you leave the tray with the seeds outdoors?

Liz from the fairy garden link?
My rhubarb package came with 3 small crowns. How many can I plant in one spot?

You never said what type of soil it needs to grow in. Didn't you live in Ireland? And don't you have bee's.
nice video - thanks .
You did not show how or when to plant the crowns.
greg senn was thinking the same thing, all he showed is how to plant a seed, an transplant, which is you have a garden you already know.
I knew about division---but not seeds
