Some phones are China-exclusives, like the OPPO Find N, Honor Magic V and Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold. Others come to China first with a delayed international launch, like the OnePlus 10 Pro, the Xiaomi 12 or the Motorola Edge X30. In this video I explain why China gets all the coolest phones first.

I feel like a Soviet Citizen living in the US:
I only have access to overpriced substandard phones produced inefficiently and uncompetitively in the US. And I yearn to bring down these tariffs and protectionist measures that restrict free trade so that we can actually get competitive advanced phones like those in China.
It's strange that we have become an uncompetitive protectionist country who fears Chinese competition and efficient, cheaper and better products. The iphone SE are not much safer as seen in revelations by Julian Assange (Vault 7 release) and has intentional backdoors for hacking and spying by the CIA/NSA. These are the revelations that got him imprisoned by the US
Unavailable in INR CURRENCY?
Huawei P50 looks like a phone oily Persian men clad in gold jewelry at a 90's night club would buy - tacky, gaudy.
Can you answer my question for me please which one of the Chinese brand phone does do the best in the Western Market
What do carriers need to mess with the phones anyway? I buy phones from the stores I want and use with carriers that I want. A simple and free market model that works.
Yess but if you live in America pretty much every other company is trying to get you in their ecosystem
What? Confused in Europe
@WhatsApp➕➊➑➍➑➒➒➐➎➐➎➌
*STOP SCAMMING PEOPLE*
Afaik calls in 4g/5g networks require VoLTE support from operator, so there might be issues in Europe too since 3g networks are being shutdown
Part of it is they want to hook people into making payments on the phone as part of their monthly mobile bill; so they can nudge up the total price through "finance charges" or some such. It's also not a "free market" if the carriers have the power they have in the US; to impose "deals" like this upon a customer base largely without other options.
It's the same thing. We Chinese don't get many fascinating new cars on time or at all. There are multiple reasons, but profit is the key. Plus, the HUAWEI ban causes the absence of new HUAWEI phones even in Chinese market. What a pity. HUAWEI flagship phones used to be so awesome...
China gets way more brands and cars than the US, it's the same as phones, loads of European brands in China are not in the US.
I miss Huawei. F trump
Huawei can't buy chips for the phone, I think now they can only buy from Samsung that's specially built without using american technology. I believe now Huawei is working very hard to build their own chips using newer technologi like carbon based chips and photon based chips.
The Mate 9 pro was one of the best phones I've used for the time
CCP bans so many US companies.
For the first reason mentioned in the video, which is that Chinese phones don't need GMS certification, I don't think it's true.
So far, almost all flagship phones with 8GEN1 launched in China have GMS service framework. With the exception of a handful of devices (such as Huawei‘s new p50 family), the flagship phones sold in China are almost all GMS-certified models, even though they don't have apps from Google installed directly from the factory.
I think he meant that the phones don't need to be GMS certified at the time of launching so the phone maker can launch in China while at the same time work on the GMS certification for international markets.
@@sir-gamesalot If a mobile phone does not have GMS certification, it is impossible to install apps related to Google services.
As I said, most of the Chinese versions of the flagship phones can install Google apps on the first day of sale, and they are all GMS certified devices.
GMS is naturally available in android phone. even without certification from google, we can install google play store. but, if the manufacturer want to sell the device outside china, then the GMS certification needed. no certification doesn't mean GMS will not work. it's two separated issues.
Re-certification isn't as hard as it seemed, once you have the original one, you can to an extend use existing UL and CE certification, if only a software change.
Same thing happened before, when Japanese dominated mobile technologies, can you imagine back 2003 Japan already has 3 mega pixels with 2x optical zoom mobile phones?
Not just that, they were first country I believed adopted 3G not just early on, but actually well utilised, such as email instead of SMS. Mobile internet has been a thing for a logn time in Japan, their phones basically functions like a smartphone even they're not all smartphones.
@@kornkernel2232 I’d say those technologies are overrated by todays standards, they indeed has mobile internet but that’s proprietary standard called i-mode, and it failed outside of Japan, Java apps are more appealing compared to boring I-mode web page. There are a lots of restrictions to use Java apps in Japan, Japanese feature phones look good on paper, but actually users don’t have much freedom of using it, mainly controlled by carriers.
@@lumpython5351 Yeah, but the point is that they adopted mobile internet around early 2000's quite widely while other countries mostly don't. At least what I observed. Mobile internet were much more foreign for most part of the world at least.
Japan basically experience what could have been the future of mobile, of course not as more broad and comprehensive as we have now.
Japan is different. Copy cat phones, are just that.
@@Xi_Jinping_Pooh_Shill It’s not like Japan didn’t start with copycat devices and products. From the 50s to the 80s that was the reputation of a lot of Japanese products.
It's amazing you answer the questions that running around in my head, tganks!
I got some phones from China directly in the past. The problem was that the Chinese ROMs (apart from coming without Google services which can be fixed) usually have aggressive "power saving" features that just freeze or kill almost any app running in the background except for maybe five whitelisted apps that are important in China, like WeChat. It's very hard or sometimes completely impossible to disable these features. Oppo has been the worst by far of the couple I had.
Very informative video. Thank you.
As a Indian I don't understand how carrier regulate smartphone.
Please make the carrier based business model.
In India carrier is not that popular, In US and EU they are popular and basically in the phone we can only use that carrier and will not work on other carriers.
in the US, that's a carryover from back when they sold landline phone
Yes...we are not bound to carriers ...it's just a choice that i choose.
The Jiophone Next launched a few months ago is a similar example here in India. Only a Jio sim works in it.

Xiaomi always dominates here in Philippines, despite the presence of other competing Chinese brands.
Though one thing I dislike, especially Xiaomi alone, is their MIUI software. Yes, you can root it to unlock its full potential, but it's like recently the worst Android skin so far. From bugs to weird glitches, you name it.
It's great to get rid of MIUI altogether and flash a custom ROM like lineage os.
Just bought my first Xiaomi, a Poco F3 (I wanted the 12 but got impatient + it was decently discounted), and first thing I did was downloading the Mi Unlock app lmao. Got LineageOS working easily and it feels far better overall*!
*except for the camera app, the Lineage team should look around for an alternative to theirs
Exactly,the MIUI is completely crap
The funny thing about MIUI is that the Chinese variants of their MIUI builds are usually packed with more features and better, more unique UI design as well.
Performance is also often better on these builds (hence why xiaomi.eu is also often praised).
They are just watering down the experience for global users for some reason, especially in the mid-range segment.
It depends on the MIUI version (region) u get plus the chip and ram u get. I have no bugs or glitches on my Xiaomi Device. Currently on Global MIUI 12.5.7 Sd860 8GB RAM. I'm happy with it
An interesting video that is really well produced!

The same thing happen here, me being from the eastern hemisphere. My country get a lot of Chinese flagship phone release, but iPhone or Google Pixel is not officially sold here.
Pixel is understandable, but iPhone not sold in your country??
@@shre6619 my too.. my country start to reduce iphone because the customer demand decreased bcoz of phone in china
If you are Indian by any chance, then you are totally right.
Both Google Phones and Apple are a failure here in India. Google Phones are less popular, and Apple products are foolishly priced.
People get a motorbike at a cheaper rate than the iPhone. Naturally, rarely anyone buys an iPhone.
Same situation must be with other Asian nations. Apple is too costly, and Google Phones are too less popular.
Here in Eastern Europe (specifically the Balkan) is similar. While iPhones are popular, the new Pixel phones are not sold here, and Chinese phones (Huawei and Xiaomi to be specific) dominate a good chunk of the phones sold.
@@_Mohit_Joshi I think pixel 6 would have been popular here but it didnot get launched in India. Also the chinese phones provide good hardware with less money. So people here tend to buy them.

One thing the west doesn't get is a dual slot dual sim iphone. Only mainalnd China+Hongkong+Macau get those. International iPhones are often dualsim but the second sim is an e-sim. Dual slot dual sim smartphones are popular in Asia, Africa, Europe, South Africa, and Oceania as folks like to use two carriers at once, but for some reason, Apple doesn't want to release a dual slot dual sim iphone worldwide.
Hm... Brasil gets those.
My mom actually has a iPhone 13 with dual sim support, straight out of Hong Kong

The other problem with Chinese phones is that 95% of them don't work well on US Carriers. Why is this?!
The US uses different wireless bands and unlocking them costs money, so if a phone isn't intended for the US, the company won't pay for them

The thing is many Chinese phones do come with GMS frameworks when launched. They just don't have those apps pre-loaded.
GMS is naturally available in android phone. even without certification from google, we can install google play store. but, if the manufacturer want to sell the device outside china, then the GMS certification needed. no certification doesn't mean GMS will not work. it's two separated issues.
Currently in China, I had a Redmi phone and a Huawei p13. Both were really great phones. The issue is that the MIUI was buggy and the hardware didn't last. Also sideloading Google apps were a pain and sometime extremely buggy. Currently have an Iphone and it seems to be the best phone to have in China. Long ago I had a Nexus 4 and it was the weirdest phone to have in China because it never worked right. When I go back to the USA, I might switch back to an Android phone.
@Shivaditya Varman That's why it's "a pain and extremely buggy" haha
I recently just bought a vivo phone for someone and Google framework is already installed , you only just need to install play store and it works perfectly after that, for all other banned services , it's just one VPN click away, even for Huawei phones once you side load Google Apps , it worked very good afterwards, i use mate 30 and it had no problem for me , only problem is I can't use corporate email on myy phone as it need to check if the phone is Google certified

Currently Indian market is the best one if you like to try so different and unique models, it first launches in India sometimes and even if it doesn't it will probably be 1-2months before whole world gets it + it's really cheap here most of times, but when it comes to iPhones it's pain in the ass over here
Where is your TSMC Video? Have you deleted it? Marton.
But why are some phones inferior than their Chinese counterparts?
They don't have the money resources to do heavy marketing and dominate the supply chain. The roch become richer while the new start ups remain well start ups. It's a bad cycle.
All phones being made in China are cheaper in China plus major competition in China vs U.S.
@@jevonsims900 cheaper in china ?
Frankly speaking, I wouldn't mind having a phone without GMS. I think new alternatives such as MicroG or just completely rooting the phone and install the likes of LineageOS are currently viable replacements. These OEMs shouldn't therefore wait for all of these certifications before giving us the new phones.
it come with a social credit score on it and a Xia wallpaper that act like a big brother.
It is pretty annoying at times when phones are released in China only. I was quite interested in the Vivo X70 Pro+ because the cameras looked amazing but despite several UK tech channels getting review units it still hasn't come out in Europe.
Can't you order one from AliBaba?
You explained the costs of entering a new market, but not why they don't bring products to already existing markets
Because it still costs a lot of money and time even if you're trying to launch a phone in a market you're already in, especially for exotic phones like foldables. For example, stock accumulation, safety certifications, carrier certifications, spare parts availability, supply chain distribution, software development, translation, etc... The same things mentioned in the video.
At 4:45 it is explained why. But to sum it up, it is costly to certificate any product to the overseas market.

Easy because mobile-phone and hardware is a market based industry. The higher the population the more these company will thrive. Lets compare China with India, China practice their monopoly on their app ware thus it able to create its own niche market while India falling behind in developing their own niche market. India try to copy this strategy but it has already become difficult for them to pull it off as the first one whom capitalize the market will have more advantage. And in US, everything is just so expensive that it is unprofitable to do so.
Got to keep the hype.
