Dr. Sleep’s levels are quite interesting. The eighth canto became E4M7 of the Ultimate Doom, while the ninth canto remains unreleased (and will most likely remain so.) Dr. Sleep also was involved in the early developments of Blood and Unreal, as well as other games such as Kingpin and Daikatana. These levels he made for Doom were quite pretty by the 90s standards, even if they look a bit simple now. Contemporary developers like Samuel Villarreal (Kaiser) have cited his work as an influence. He was definitely an interesting yet still mysterious character in the Doom community.
For 1995 standards (considering when these maps were made, Doom II was not even a year old yet) they are amazing. Minos, the next map, is an even better map I think.
The first two Canto maps are pretty decent too. Everyone's shitting on Dr Sleep these days but I find his maps very enjoyable and atmospheric. I think now that he is no longer with us a compilation megawad tribute thing collecting all of his stuff would be nice. I've yet to check his Heretic level.
Nowadays in most wads, we start off way too hot, couple of cybers, archviles perched on towers maybe, revenant hell knight combos, all ready to pound you. Miss these wonderful and peaceful maps.
Hey Bigmac, great video. I'm certain the pronunciation of Minos is 'Min-os' and not 'Mine-os'. In Greek mythology, he was the first king of Crete and son of Zeus and Europa. He was involved in sending people to the labyrinth where the Minotaur resided, hence the name Mino-taur or Bull of Minos. The Hell Knights and Barons of Hell sort of look like the Minotaurs :-D

Dr. Sleep's maps are a good lesson in DooM map creation. Simple layouts with alcoves and secrets aplenty, pleasing level designs, traps that are fun and not too punishing or unfair. His maps are a lot of fun to play or to watch.

Thank you very much for playing this thirth map 😀 Again, it brings back memories from my teenage years, when I played the Playstation version of these maps.
Always personally enjoyed this map quite a lot. It has a very straightforward design but its done really well, and is satisfying to complete. Really nothing to complain about with this map at all except for maybe the main little hub with the brown circular buildings maybe needed a way to differentiate them all but thats really not a big deal considering that the map actually doesn't take too long to explore and complete.
Pretty interesting map design. Kind of a hub-and-spoke design. Pretty straight-forward, easy to navigate, other than confusing which door is which. : )
