The Osmonds are a rabbit hole worthy of exploring. Donny and their younger sister Marie had a tv show when I was a kid. The whole family is phenomenally talented.

I am 73 years old and have been a fan of The Osmonds since their first appearance on The Andy Williams Show. The family consists of: George (dad) and Olive (mom), both have passed away; Tom and Virl (both hearing impaired); Alan (deals with Multiple Sclerosis, retired); Wayne (had a brain tumor removed, retired); Merrill (usually the lead singer, now serving a mission with his wife, Mary, at the Washington, D.C. Temple); Jay (greatest drummer, in my opinion, I've ever heard, did most of the choreography for them); Donny (still performs); Marie (usually sang country); and Jimmy (suffered a stroke a few years ago, retired). They have been in business (as a group and/or individually) for 60 + years and play over 30 instruments. The original four singing brothers (Alan, Wayne, Merrill, & Jay) are my favorites, if that's possible, and the harmonies are amazing! You might like to listen to their album, The Plan, which is based on their beliefs (has some rock songs on it, such as Going Home and One Way Ticket to Anywhere). I've checked out some of the people who have made the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and i can't believe The Osmonds have never made the list. 😢 I, too, am Mormon, and it was through an article i read about The Osmonds and their faith that i became interested, especially families being together forever. I lived in Provo, Utah, and worked in the church office building. This subscriber enjoys your channel, and i thank you for reacting to The Osmonds.

"The Plan" was a great album. I read that the Osmonds couldn't do their mission work when they were young because of their popularity. Instead, the church opted to let them produce an album based on their faith, and it actually converted a lot of people. There's a video on UA-cam of a demo of "The Plan" with the band playing shorter versions of some of the songs.

To see how diverse their talent is, watch the video for "Down By The Lazy River". They're singing, dancing, and playing every instrument. it's even more funky than this one. Then do "Crazy Horses" which is almost hard rock.

Huge Osmond fan from that era (yeah, I'm in my late 60s). Yes, that's Donny in the middle and he still sings. He's done a lot more than with his brothers or his sister, Marie. He's also been Joseph in Joseph and the Dream Coat. There's a lot of difference in their music too, they can do anything from rock to country. Check out their version of "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother." And "Crazy Horses."
The songs, the guys, and they've kept it clean for over 50 years. And they have kids and now grandkids in the business. All but Donny and Marie and the littlest, Jimmy, are retired. The oldest of the singing brothers, Alan, has Multiple Sclerosis and had to quit performing. And, fun fact: their two oldest brothers, Tom and Virl are both profoundly deaf. All the family learned sign and they perform with sign quite often in respect for their deaf fans. The brothers have joined their talented littler brothers on stage occasionally to "sing" with them. The Osmond's 50th Anniversary show is on You Tube and they are with the rest of the family.

There is talk he will bring the show to the US in the future. So Jay, Donny, and Marie are the ones who still perform

I would like to point out how amazing they were for being able to dance that energetically and not seem out of breath. This was live, no auto-tune and no lip-syncing. I was 7 and mad about Donny Osmond. Who remembers Tiger Beat magazine?

    • @NilZed1
      @NilZed1 9 місяців тому +3

Hate to remind you, but they didn’t have tiny easily hidden body mics back then, a studio mic wouldn’t have picked up just their voices, one voice maybe but multiple voices moving around the stage would have come through unevenly , and none of them are holding one of the corded hammer sized mics used at the time. Which is good because they couldn’t handle being jerked about that much and the cords woukd have been knotted up pretty badly by the end.
Back in that era it was absolutely common for singers to mime through a song on live tv and this is a good example of it.
Sometimes live really was live, but this was not.

What you see in this video is 5 of the 9 Osmond siblings. The two oldest brothers were born with hearing loss, and their mother tried teaching them to verbalize through music. Then came the 5 you see on the stage. There was another younger brother, who joined the group later on and then tried to go solo. There was also the sister, Marie, who had a country career. Check out her big hit Paper Roses. She and Donny had their own variety show in the mid to late 70s as well. You can now see her hawking the Nutrisystem for weight loss. As an adult, Donny has had a very successful Broadway career. He starred in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, among other successful musical ventures. He even appeared in the Weird Al video for "White and Nerdy".

I spent a lot of 2020 (lockdown) researching the Osmonds, Donny in particular, because I completely lost track of them after I started wanting “sexy” in my music. Their mother designed and made their outfits. Donny is beginning another residency at Harrah’s now (he’s 66) and his voice is still all there. You should really check out Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. Donny brought his sexy along with his incredible voice in it! The oldest performing brother, Alan, was stricken with MS a number of years ago. Some of his offspring sing. The next younger, Wayne had a brain tumor which affected his heart and had to quit singing. The next down, Merrill, very recently announced his retirement from live music. The next one down, Jay, does a little performing but has also written a musical about the brothers’ career. Donny comes next, and he has album after album out there. He struggled really hard in the 80s and 90s because he had became irrelevant (note the lack of sexy) and had to figure out how to continue a career. He has done amazingly well for himself. The next one down, Marie, the only sister, had some success as a musician and, along with Donny, had a talk show and had an eleven year run at Harrah’s, ending just a few years ago. Jimmy, the youngest, had a so-so career but had a stroke onstage while performing in a musical and he never completely recovered. The two eldest brothers, Virl and Tom are both hearing impaired. Every single one of the children, even Tom and Virl, play multiple musical instruments. Their story is actually a pretty sad one. The Osmonds and The Jacksons had very similar career paths and, to some degree, the same unhappy childhoods. Donny and Michael stayed friends until Michael’s death. Donny and at least one other brother have autobiographies. Did you know that Donny was the singing voice for the main guy in Mulan?

Super talented, no doubt. These kids then adults were everywhere back then. A crooner named Andy Williams was huge, and had a Christmas special every year. He is one of the people who put them on the map. They were a part of that show every year, and their sister Marie made her first stage appearance ever on his show, at around 3 or 4. They did their own choreography, learned to ice skate to do skits on the Williams show, all kinds of stuff. Worth checking out are clips on youtube from their 1972 performance at the Ohio State Fair (the largest fair in the country at the time). I was in the audience, and they put on an amazing show. Yes, the little one in the middle is Donnie, who still has residencies in Vegas and also did a lot on Broadway. He was a presenter along with Michael Jackson at the 1974 American Music Awards. Donnie also tried to help Michael when he was struggling toward the end of his life. The Osmonds wrote much of their music, and wanted to do more rock, but several influences in their lives kept them from being able to do that, including some bad business advice that left them bankrupt and having to start over. Lots of tragedy in their family also. Several documentaries have been made about their lives. Here's a video clip (from just last year) of Donny talking about him and Michael Jackson swapping songs to record ua-cam.com/video/JgMeWfFnGSc/v-deo.html

You struck a chord with me when you spoke of your daughters. My mom taught me about all the greats of her generation (the 40's) Now is the time to teach your daughters of the greats of my mom's generation on up. Please share with them the great music and musicians you are learning about so they can not only enjoy, but learn about great music so they can appreciate the goodness that music and lyrics can convey. That just have you have learned, that music needn't be auto-tuned, AI generated, or raunchy to enjoy. This they will keep with them always.
When I was a little girl, about five, just after my parents divorce, my mom would send us to bed. She would put on music to listen to and unwind from her day. I would sneak down and sit on the stairs and listen to the music she would play. Before she even taught me about the greats, I was already listening! To this day (I'm in my early 60's), I remember with fondness, Matt Monroe, Nancy Wilson, the jazz and pop singer, (she can interpret a song like no one can), Andy Williams, and others, ingraining great music into my heart, soul, and mind. This great music will do the same with your girls as it has with me.. Big blessings to you and your family. 😊

Not to take away anything from the Osmonds because I am another person in my 60's who have fond memories of them. You may want to research David Cassidy, who was lead singer on the TV show Partridge Family. Between 1970 and 1972 he had 10 songs in the top 100 and "I think I love you" was #1 for three weeks in 1970. It's really too bad that he was considered "bubblegum pop" and didn't get the recognition he could have had.

Please check out one of Donny's solo albums, Soldier of Love. In 1989, the title track went to #2 on Billboard Hot 100. It was said to be his come back album.
I remember I was listening to the radio on my way to work when the morning show DJ said he was going to play a new song from a mystery artist. It took me hearing 3 notes of his voice and I'm screaming in my car, "It's Donny!" and such a great song. I remember thinking it was sad that they had to play it as a mystery artist for several days, get people say how much they liked it, and then tell them it was Donny Osmond. There was a bias that anything Osmond wasn't cool. I also knew, in 5 seconds on-air, that he was the Peacock on the TV show the Masked Singer. Love to hear what you think of of it when you hear it. They were on point with learning songs, dance routines, instruments etc. On the Andy Williams show they were asked to fill in for an act that cancled. It was an ice skating act, the boys literally learned to ice thay day and performed live, no mistakes. Same with instrumemts. They learned to play certain instruments within a day or had a week to learn. This is pure talent.

The Osmonds and the Jackson 5 sang songs the other group would decide they would pass on...they got stuck at a hotel once when both on tour....cause the mix of fans basically made it so they couldn't leave. If I remember right the 2 groups played football in a ballroom together (or something like that). Donny and Michael were friends....presented an award together...Donny has told stories about when they would hang out and go out for tacos or something thru a drive thru. They would disguise their voices at the speaker just so they could see the faces of the workers once they were recognized at the window. I know Michael also helped Jimmy get into music production which was a big part of his career as an adult. Obviously both families would have understanding about the uniqueness of their lives....both the positive and the not positive. Lots of remarkable cool stories about the Osmonds.

Great seeing you react to the Osmonds. Back in the 1970s the group, like in this clip, consisted of: Alan (guitar, June 22, 1949), Wayne (lead guitar, August 28, 1951), Merrill (bass guitar, April 30, 1953), Jay (in this clip lead singer, normally drums, March 2, 1955) and Donny (keyboard, December 9, 1957). Donny was by far the most handsome of the bunch. I LOVED him in Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat film; I think he was the best Joseph and indeed, his voice was amazing in it: Any dream will do (From the movie: ua-cam.com/video/0wAs3sTAFJ4/v-deo.html, Live: ua-cam.com/video/a2r6tYg1VEY/v-deo.html), Close Every Door (From the movie: ua-cam.com/video/d8reEiq4ui8/v-deo.html, Live: ua-cam.com/video/zbQ9SvTo88g/v-deo.html). The brothers were great and extremely talented: all brothers could sing and dance and each brother could play about 4-6 instruments, really amazing. Love their dancing in One Bad Apple: ua-cam.com/video/NpLSq29aORQ/v-deo.html. But they did not just make "bubblegum" music. Some of their songs bordered on (hard) rock, like Hold her Tight: ua-cam.com/video/6z9D2PJmz_k/v-deo.html, Last Days: ua-cam.com/video/Qfl6FJRw1dI/v-deo.html

Donnie still sings and just recently paused his nightly Vegas show with Marie. He sang on the first season of the Masked Singer and was fantastic (he was the Peacock, the videos are on UA-cam). He was edged out by T-Pain (many people felt he should have won). He was incredibly entertaining! And he commuted every week from taping the Masked Singer back to Vegas for his show. He never missed a show!

Yes, Donny was the MJ of the group. He did a lot of solo stuff too as well as his TV show with his sister, 'The Donny & Marie show'. They would come out & she would sing 'I'm a little bit country' & he would respond 'I'm a little bit rock & roll'. It was a cute, corny, family friendly variety show. The whole family are talented & like the Jacksons, they had group stuff & solo/ duet stuff.

During this period, they were in a direct competition with the Jackson 5. The big "boy" type bands...but they both had real talent, not just a gimmick. Donnie and Michael got featured a lot in the front because they were big teen idols, so it promoted sales.

I'm the same age as Donnie Osmond. I remember back in 1970, 1971, and 1972, that period, the Osmonds and the Jackson 5 went back and forth with hits. The Osmonds would have a hit record, then the Jackson 5 would come out with one and it would go back and forth during these years. It was like they were in competition with one another. A pretty exciting time for me as a kid! Great song and video.

I think I have this right, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Merrill (lead) is wearing a blue belt. Donny (the youngest) is wearing yellow, although purple became his color later. Alan has on purple . Jay is green. Wayne's color is reddish orange. They were often compared with the Jacksons and had hits during the same era. It is said that the Osmonds and Jacksons were friends or at least friendly. The two oldest siblings have hearing issues and were not part of the group. Their youngest siblings also sang. Jimmy became part of the group later, and the only sister Marie has her own singing career. Donny and Marie had a variety show together in the late seventies and a talk show in the late 1990s.

❤❤❤ Jackson 5 (Michael Jackson and his brothers) and Monkees are worth giving a listen to. Try Jackson 5's "ABC", "I Want You Back" and "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)". Monkees try "I'm A Believer", "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone" and "Last Train To Clarksville". Osmonds try "Crazy Horses", "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother" and "Down By The Lazy River". I loved Partridge Family too, but pre-teen crush on David Cassidy was the reason for that.

Donny also has an amazing voice.. so does Marie.. just a very talented family.9 brothers and 1 sister.. the 2 oldest brothers are deaf and the younger siblings started singing to make money for hearing aids.. The Osmond's were born.

Technically, Michael was the Donnie of his family. Hard to compare after they went on different paths when the "family group" era died out. The Osmonds' debut was in 1958, and The Jackson 5 in 1964. The Osmonds T.V. debut was on the Andy Williams Show in 1962, and they were on there frequently, as I remember. The Jackson 5's debut was in 1969 on The Ed Sullivan Show.

No they were not the white Jackson 5. They were NSYNC 20 years before that group was ever started, they do a lot more dancing than the Jackson's and they play over 30 different instruments and they tap dance. Michael was the only real dancer of the Jackson's.
