if the majority of people who use blender own an NVIDIA GPU, what’s the financial incentive for specifically optimizing for AMD and intel arc users? this is the main obstacle that AMD has to overcome - the developers of these productivity applications simply don’t care, and that’s why NVIDIA basically has a monopoly in that sense.
if fewer customers own an AMD GPU, there are less reasons to optimize for AMD, which leads to even less people buying AMD, which means there are even less reasons to optimize for AMD, etc. it’s the feedback loop that is killing the GPU market.

I bought a new 6700 XT last summer, just as the prices settled down after the crypto crash. Back then it cost the same as 3060 Ti (at least here, in Poland), and I went with the red team just because of the VRAM capacity.

Even better choice nowadays as the 6700 XT price undercuts the 3060 TI (at least in the UK and NL).
      + Better raster performance
      + More VRAM
      + Cheaper
      - No CUDA acceleration (if you don't use programs that support it not really a con)
      - Worse raytracing support (although in this class of GPU raytracing gimps performance so hard you don't want it enabled anyhow)
I had to pick between those two as well as that's within my budget and went for the 6700 XT - no regrets. It still entertains me that I can now play StarCraft 2 without the graphics card fans even spinning haha.

Same, I built my first PC on January of this year, and I was in between the 3060 ti or the 6700XT, both were around the same price at the time of buying the components, $350 iirc, but since I really don't care about ray tracing and whatever Nvidia decides to focus on more with their gpus, I ended up going with the 6700XT, and boi do I love it, I can record and play games at the same time with no issues, the Adrenaline software helps a lot when I want to check my performance, and it gives me the option to record which comes in handy whenever I forget to open Outplayed (yes I use this to record my gameplay/highlights). I'm satisfied with the GPU and overall my PC

Just built my PC January of this year and really wanted to go with the 6700 XT but it was like 200 USD more than 3060 Ti. Ended up going with the 3060 Ti. Still would because the performance increase isn't really worth it in my opinion. Most games still use 8GB of VRAM and those that do go over it still give a smooth experience. Just shitty games like TLOU part 1 are unstable but thank God I didn't buy that and actually checked the reviews. Also gonna go with AMD if possible next time, Nvidia really did us dirty by giving the 3060 Ti and 3070 only 8GB of VRAM. At this point, everyone who sold their 2080 Ti for the 3070 are just gonna feel scammed.

Ray tracing has been the biggest marketing ploy of the last 10 years. It is barely functional in a majority of it's applications and the games that it does work well in are so few and far between it's just not worth the insane margins they are squeezing out of gamers with these 800-2000 dollar cards. All the development time that has gone into this technology could have been used to make rasterization even better but here we are struggling to get 60 fps in most games with RT.

I mean, nvidia doesn't ONLY have RTX to sweeten the deal. Include Reflex, DLSS, better drivers and software support (imo), and now a new addition, VSR, along with whatever they may have in the future, since new techs are constantly coming out now, and it becomes far more subjective. If u want those features, an extra 150 bucks on top of an already $1050 min card for all that is honestly p justifiable. This isn't to say it's all good value, this is to say that AMD has the same value issues with the gen of cards.

We're still in the growing pains stage. RT is needed if we're going to push graphics further and further. RT is also so much easier for devs to use over rasterization, no more needing to pre bake lights after every build (which can take hours). This will give artists and designers more time to develop more interesting things rather than sitting idle waiting for the lights to bake. Once RT is the standard and hardware has caught up to where even a cheap laptop APU can run RT without issues it'll be fine.

I've owned ATI/AMD cards before (9600, x700, 5870, 6990) and with Nvidia skimping VRAM I think it's high time I switched. We had 8gb back in 2015. Nvidia is just holding the market back just like Intel did with quad cores for a decade. I bought an AMD 2600, then the 5900x I have now because I was done with Intel. I'm also now DONE with Nvidia for a while.

RX 7600M XT only has 8GB VRAM. That means Navi 33 GPU only has a 128-bit memory controller. 7600 XT, which should have a similar performance as the 3060 Ti, will also have 8GB VRAM. So there is no need to regret it. Do you remember AMD deleted their comments that VRAM is important in the 5500 XT advertisement and released the 64-bit 4GB 6500 XT? AMD doesn't care about VRAM. 7900 XTX and 7900 XT should compete with 4090 and 4080 so they have 24 and 20GB VRAM. But RDNA 3 is too slow to compete with Ada. AMD can only lower the price to 4070 level to sell them. That's where the VRAM advantage in AMD comes in.

The problem is AMD isn't super competitive, like Vex said they're just matching nvidia. If you're matching nvidia and I am used to nvidia why would I switch to you? Give me a valid reason AMD: be super aggressive on pricing, create brand new technologies instead of following nvidia's lead, do something cool for once

I brought AMD for the first time in years, because the potential for overclocking the 6800XT well above its pay grade looked great, I had heard all the AMD driver issues n problems and noticed most had workarounds etc(being a tinkerer none of this bothered me, so figured why not).
got it, overclocked it, was not disapointed in the overclock at all(it performs better than anything I could have afforded nvidia side by a HUGE margin), but the first two weeks were a nightmare of working out crashes n bugs n issues, that everyone put down to driver issues, and had various work arounds for, such as turning off hybrid hibernate etc etc.
turns out none of issues it had were driver issues at all, they could be reduced or removed by driver tweaks and software workarounds...but that only got rid of the symptoms not the actual problem.
turns out the problem all along was the displayport cable quality/spec...cables that come with most monitors are version 1.2, and don't actually meet the 1.2 spec, on top of this, most cables you can buy don't actually meet the spec they were rated at.(unless you find a VESA certified cable)
why is this a problem? refresh rate lock, if you have an out of spec cable, it can have problems locking to the refreshrate of your monitor correctly, it will lock to a random refreshrate such as 15hz even tho windows is showing 144hz, or it will fluctuate between certain points, 100hz-148hz for example.
it also caused problems such as the screen being black after a shutdown(windows 11 by default does a hybrid sleep mode instead of an actual shutdown) and on wakeup if the cable unstableness caused an issue, you got a black screen OR stuttering on the desktop after "cold" boot when it had been off for awhile, and the only fix was a reboot, and if you forced a game while it was in this state before restarting, it would usually crash.
how did I test and find this out? accidentally while checking my monitor for ghosting.
using the UFO ghosting test site, it has a refresh rate indicator at the bottom.
what does not having a stable refresh rate do? it causes random black screens, random game crashes, stutters and other issues.
a new VESA certified 1.4a cable fixed all of these issues.
the only two issues it didn't fix were video stuttering on a second monitor while playing a game on the primary high refreshrate monitor, and using AMD live recording with HEVC(both of these were known issues listed in the drivers, and got fixed in later driver versions)

I live in Poland and RTX 4080 is about 20% more expensive than RX 7900 XTX here at the moment and prices didn't change much in the last few weeks. Raster performance is roughly the same on those 2 cards. Paying 20% extra for ray-tracing and CUDA seems like a bad deal. Its not like RX 7900 XTX can't do ray-tracing either. I've seen benchmarks that show that its RT performance is still above RTX 3090 in most games. Performance in productivity apps varies but in some AMD wins and in others Nvidia is better so its very case by case thing.

If you don’t do it properly you end up having problems. Nvidia really sucks, no vram, overpriced. Only 4090 is better the rest of the cards sucks.

For professional video editing 4K and higher there is currently only the 4090 option due to 4080 having 16 GB VRAM. YT channel Tech Notice is covering topics for content creators. He did review the 7900 XTX and found that there have been significant improvements, but in certain effects used, it’s not there yet. He did review the 4070 ti as well… VRAM limitation.
When it comes to blender rendering, Nvidia cards are better. But big studios more likely use Nvidia and AMD Pro Lines for those type of work. Big studios however have render server farms that can be utilized. Nvidia has the ADA 6000, which has 48 GB VRAM and sells for about 6’800 $.
What AMD does better than Nvidia is one centralized application for everything whereby Nvidia has an outdated look, requires 2 applications plus and forces to sign up online. I’ve used myself the screen recording via AMD catalyst and it works very well. I don’t use OBC anymore, which initial setup isn’t most user friendly for people who use it the first time. A YT channel that used Nvidia historically tried AMD and was positively surprised concerning streaming and desktop recordings.

The only reason I upgraded past a 1080ti is VR.
AMD didn't show up to play for like the first 4-5 years of VR existing. (CV1 & Index released during the GTX980 era.) So a lot of the older classics just work better on Team Green. Which, granted, is less of an issue with today's GPU hardware on yesteryear's VR titles. But for anything roomscale, I don't want a wire. And nVenc + Reflex (+Virtual Desktop) is basically uncontested for that use case.
I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned it, but AMD's OpenGL performance on Windows is also attrocious. It's not a big deal for me, only really making a difference when emulating PS2 titles, but if I was into PS3 emulation or Switch emulation (specifically the community that has sprung up around Breath of the Wild), I would be hard on Team Green's side for that reason.

OpenCL as a compute API will be more important in professional space. In this space time is money. So some IHV cannot let themselves held back by API development that being slowed down just because Khronos looking for a solution that can satisfy everyone. We need 5.5.0 while 5.4.3 is the last version released (a ton of pissed off people on their github). I wish I could find what are the numbers for training and for generating of a 6700xt (for instance) so I could then sort of know where a 7900XTX would fall, but no dice. This is a pretty interesting topic and I feel like a lot of it has to do with feature economy. Nvidia products are highly driven by features (e.g. G-Sync, RT, DLSS, Reflex, NVENC etc.) and a wide range of industry support for productive use. While Nvidia is innovating and engineering new features AMD is trying to catch up most of the time and even if AMD follows up with their own implementation it's almost always slightly inferiour to Nvidia's implementation (image quality in DLSS vs. FSR, performance in RT, ...).
For me, personally, this creates some kind of fear of missing out (FOMO): What if AMD's implementation is worse than Nvidia's in a new game or what if AMD's implementation is just not supported by this game? What if Nvidia invents a new feature that they make available for older cards as well (Nvidia hasn't in the past, but... what if they do the next time?)? And then there's also the fact that Nvidia is just better at working with/paying game devs to make them implement their "awesome new feature" (e.g. Reflex for competitive games). Maybe it sounds crazy, but these are the considerations that almost always drive me back into Nvidia's arms. I hate it and I would love to switch to AMD, but... there's always this "but, ..." that makes me hesitate and question whether AMD would be a good choice or not.

AMD fanboys are absolutely unbearable, apple fanboys are unpopular for blindly over paying but at least apple makes really good products, but here in the GPU space all amd does is shitt and put out products that are clearly inferior to NVidia but still these corporate suckers vouch for inferior products which is kind of weird to see. Nvidia GPUs are overpriced for sure but nobody can deny their technological lead from having good AI features to industry wide optimization for any software or workloads and not to forget the ML market where amd is completely non existent. amd cards are just good enough raster bricks but with NVidia my GPU can be so much more and because of that I don't mind paying a premium for Nvidia cards as it actually is overall a really good product in respect to what amd is offering.

And NVIDIA fanboys are in reality just salivating fangirls of Jensen, ones that like to be shafted in the face every generation, remember the 3.5GB disaster on the GTX 970? You guys like buying gimped cards that becomes obsolete two years later, good luck using RT with high textures in newer games with cards that has 8GB~12GB which are the majority of cards Jensen shits for you.
RTX 4050 6GB when the RTX 3050 which was already a TURD had 8GB, RTX 4080 with only 16GB when AMD gave 16GB at 3070Ti (which has 8GB garbage) level on the RX 6800, both the 7900XT and the XTX has more VRAM than the RTX 4080, better yet was the RTX 3080 MSRP of $700 becomes $1200 on the RTX 4080 while AMD gives the 7900XTX at the SAME MSRP of the 6900XT ($1000) while having more 8GB of VRAM, you guys like to be shafted, it's so good.

I got an RTX 3080 10GB Version, and it runs every game perfectly fine on 1440p. And yes I play with all graphics options on the highest possible. If the games are not E-Sports relevant, then they will run at arround 60-80 FPS (even with Raytracing for the one which suppprt it) and that is totally ok for me.
    For example:
Hogwarts Legacy - Ultra Settings with Raytracing on Balanced -> 60-70 FPS
Cyberpunk 2077 - Ultra Settings with Raytracing (one below Psycho, dont know yet how its called) -> 70-80 FPS
All other game I play run arround 90-120 (in some cases even more)
This is the third Nvidia card for me (after GTX 750 TI und 1070 TI) and I dont even think about to buy AMD. Even if Tubers tell the people to think about buying AMD, I would never recommend cause from my friends which bought AMD, they STILL got a lot of issues with.

Which according to their roadmap, should be next year. Either a revamp with the super version of the cards like the 20 series, or the 50 series releases.
Maybe AMD will come out with a really good 7950 version that does really good in Blender.

I used AMD (formerly ATI) almost 100% since the late 90s but switched over to nvidia in the 1080 generation because AMD was just not keeping up. I skipped the 20 series, but then went Nvidia again in the 30 series because the AMD 6000 series were just not available, but downgraded to the 'midrange' 60TI after having been a high end buyer for decades as the pricing/segmentation were getting out of control. Now here in this generation both AMD and Nvidia have priced me out of the market and I decide that the best 'current generation' card is actually a used 3080. Good luck AMD and Nvidia, steam hardware survey shows that less than 3% of the market is running a 4k or higher resolution and VR is only 2% - almost nobody needs the high end anymore, and I'm not going to be paying $800 for a "midrange" card.

It's whatever your particular use case is.
AMD has a history lagging anywhere from 6 months to 2 years behind NVidia in terms of features and even then, it's a lesser version that they have to opensouce to get people to adopt it. People seem to think AMD is their friend by charging less. It's more like they have too. Want cutting edge features, better day-one drivers and willing to pay the premium for it, NVidia has you covered. Want to max out performance to budget ratio, AMD is currently the way to go. It's that simple. Personally, I like RT and find real G-Sync noticeably better than Freesync. Even so the last GPU i bought was for my nephew and it was an Intel Arc 750...decent performance, steadily improving drivers and 500USD of productivity software and games. Intel even has feature parity with NVidia and then some. Why are they being left out of the discussion?

    • @-Ice_Cold-
      @-Ice_Cold- Рік тому

Yeah, why? Maybe for crappy drivers and hardware? And i doubt G-Sync is ''noticeably better'' than FreeSync. G-Sync is more expensive technology and FreeSync is more often adding in the Monitors. NVIDIA is for rich, who loves flaunt their expensive things

Why people aren't switching to AMD is quite simple.
They still charge too much for what you get, they try to pride themselves in not giving "gamers what they don't want", but also at the same time charge nearly the same as nvidia with less features.
I would rather have tensor cores than not having them when the difference in price is so small.

The thing with AMD GPUs, their biggest edge is monetary value. They might not be the best of the best in terms or raw power, performance in work tasks or the accompanying technologies, but they bring the optimal balance between performance and cost, especially in lower-end segment. Look at 6600 vs 3050, 6700 vs 3060 or 3800 vs 3070, and the AMD cards will be the clear winners for their cost. 6700xt, 6800xt and to a lesser extent 6900 are also great cards that pack quite a punch, and the excess VRAM allows you to run things in bigger resolution and go for higher settings overall while Nvidia only starts going over 8gb of VRAM in 3080 price segment.
But beyond that, of couse, the technological edge and the performance of the flagship GPUs is currently championed by Nvidia. They make great cards, but only if you have the money or need them for specific tasks optimized for nvidia hardware.
