    an article on the hunchback of notre dame's harmful portrayal of romani people: greensboro.com/the-hunchback-of-notre-dame-perpetuates-negative-gypsy-stereotypes/article_524e3593-0b12-5d54-925b-3667820893c9.html
    in the original movie, one of the main reasons frollo feels hatred towards esmeralda was because she is romani, and to him romani people were "vermin." during the song, he uses the g-slur when describing esmeralda. "hellfire" is not about the conflict between frollo being a celibate judge who is experiencing lustful feelings towards someone. his villain song is explicitly motivated by his anti-roma racism, the same racism that lead him to kill quasimodo's mother and treat him poorly throughout the movie. given that my rendition involves my own interpretation of the song (that being a religious woman struggling with internalized homophobia), i decided that the slur had no place being in my cover.
    i should also emphasize that i don’t know everything, i’m not an expert on this topic whatsoever, and i encourage you to listen to what romani people have to say directly about this song and usage of the word.

      I always felt it was both lust and hate. As a pious judge he isn't going to have sex out of marriage. But he could NEVER marry a "G*****"! That would be "horrid"! So the conflict of being attracted to someone he feels he should be disgusted by leaves him begging with god "Let her be mine, or let me destroy her so she isn't a problem anymore, it's not MY fault, SHE is the problem. I WOULD NEVER BE ATTRACTED TO ONE OF HER KIND ON MY OWN!" He can't let go of his HATE and BIGOTRY towards the romani but he also can't purge the desire he feels for Esmerelda, and the conflict is tearing him apart and driving him MAD.

      Hello.
      I… I don't even know how to start this comment. I could get a lot of insults from those who don't read it all or don't understand what I mean. However I will try anyway for two reasons: Firstly I really like your song. Secondly, I appreciated the way you set out your reasons for changing the song.
      So, I start by saying: I'm Italian, so I don't know well the issue of the Romani people in the USA, I don't really appreciate the alteration of the words "Gipsy" in the text, even if I understand why this text can hurt the sensitivity of the people who read it they listen (especially the Romani).
      The text is clearly harsh and full of derogatory meanings. However, I think this is precisely the meaning of the song: the mad Judge Frollo sings it and it doesn't surprise me that in a context like the one in which the film is set, he uses truly horrible terms to identify a minority that he hates. Personally, I believe that changing the worst words loses a lot of the meaning of the song, as it is clearly to be understood in a negative sense: Frollo is wrong and it is shown openly.
      I hope I'm not offending you with this brief (hell no) opinion I have on the subject.
      Too easily I see comments that go too far towards a position taken without thinking.
      it's true, I don't appreciate that the words have changed, but I understand the desire not to hurt the sensibilities of others. This is why I would invite people who, like me, have not appreciated the change, to explain their thoughts a little better, instead of insulting at random.
      I would also add that those who support the change should reflect on the fact that the use of certain words was common in societies and historical moments in which certain works are set. Removing that subtext also removes, in my opinion, an important lesson: in our history, we Westerners in particular, have committed many crimes, but hiding them under the carpet is not the solution. I think it's better to admit that it's our fault and instead of hiding them, show them in a way that reminds us and others that those awful things are our fault and we'll do them again if we forget we did them.
      Having said that, I apologize for an overly long comment and for my bad English.
      (I would also like to add that there are shortcomings and lightness in the article that the author missed, including the very message of the film and the characters of Esmeralda and Quasimodo, but I would go further)
      I hope my comment hasn't offended anyone and above all it hasn't annoyed you, you have a beautiful voice.

    • @alexzander7386
      @alexzander7386 Рік тому +26

      I'd disagree. Like yeah its more respectful to a really marginalized and disrespected people, but at the same time, you have to look at what it means in the original and pretty perfect villain song. Frollo was an absolute villain, no question about that. And what made him a great villain was just how little compassion he had towards the romani people, the citizens of paris, or his own son. He was really about to rape esmerelda by threat of death on a pyre and twist it in his megalomaniacal religious massacre as an act of god.
      So softening his language, making it any less piercing, not only tarnishes the song but in a way forgives the monster who sings it.

I don't know the history of it, and I can't speak for the Roma people, but I know the word that was replaced has come to be used more and more in a derogatory manner, which is to my understanding why people now consider it a slur. If you're not sure which word was in the original, Google the lyrics, it began with g.
      Given that I didn't even know the word was a slur until a couple years ago (which, to be fair, may be a problem with society and not just my upbringing since my parents didn't know either), I wouldn't be surprised if the filmmakers back in 1996 didn't realise that it was offensive. Given that Pocahontas came out a year before this film, in which there was a very clear theme of racism and message against racism, I would be surprised if they knew it was offensive and kept it in.

You know, despite their gleeful singing about murdering people and constant use of slurs. Native Americans of all tribes have repeatedly spoken against it.

    • @adams13245
      @adams13245 9 місяців тому

      Might even make even more sense with the latter two, since Christianity doesn't categorically condemn all heterosexual couples to damnation. As long as you get a certificate from a priest you don't get your junk burned off. Though apparently looking at a member of your preferred sex and thinking "He/ she's hot." does get your junk burned off. Or maybe not, since David did the deed with a woman he wasn't married to and got off with killing the infant. Weird that.

    • @lagran470
      @lagran470 Рік тому +10

      @@justice_of_UA-cam well idk what they meant, but in the original it makes it seem like the Devil (temptation/lust) is stronger than a man (Frollo), vs this version the devil (the temptation and ‘sin’ of loving a woman) is stronger than a literal man, assuming the singer is a lesbian and never found herself lusting over men. Im not sure that made sense but that’s just my thoughts.

      The line goes to show Frollo's evil. In that line, the singer blames God for creating the temptation, yet doesn't admit their weak will ask help to block it.
      The singer would rathe blame God (and everyone else) before they admit their faults. That line is essentially what sets the singer on the road to irredeemable evil. By the end, there is no saving them

    • @adams13245

      @@thegreatmonacage3782 I mean God did put the tree of knowledge of good and evil into Eden and not give the two humans there knowledge of good and evil. Also, you know, he's all powerful and all knowing. So it's kind of his fault, since he knew what would happen.
