- Vitaliy Shumey is being treated at a specialist neurorehabilitation center in Spain after losing part of his skull in a Russian attack. His case, and his father's devoted care, have attracted widespread attention in Ukraine.

I am a male nurse and i took care of a man for years who had a very similar part of this brain removed caused by fractured aneurysm. The fact he doesnt speak is bc a part of his brain responsible for forming words are gone. along with several more motoric functions. the trauma inflicted by the injury still affects all parts of the brain, with a chance of few functions recovering partially. The frontal part of the brain seems intact, so i think he recognizes people, especially close friends and family. He does have human feelings in the same intensity than people around him. he is ofc very very insecure, but with basic human needs like attention and commendation. he needs physical care, to be not alone, see pictures of places and listen to music he liked (for the start not loud heavy metal or such). and most of all he will always need patience because every mental task will be more complicated to him.
This is so sad. All these because of the ego and greed of one man called Putin. May Putin rot in hell in eternity

Thanks to Spain and his carers in Ukraine. The father is wonderful. I hope he gets well. Even Ukraine may learn something about the first medical intervention.

This is a very sobering report. So much suffering. I very much hope that Vitaliy can continue to make progress with the expertise of medical professionals and with the love and support of his father and the wonderful football team and manager. Terrible to see the damage to his skull - but people can sometimes make remarkable recoveries, and Vitaliy certainly shows will power and determination.
May the Holy Spirit of Our Lord Jesus, Bless him each day with his recovery as the Angles surround his bed each day and night.

When I see videos like these I am more interested to see him as he was before. A strong dedicated patriot who loves his family and country. This also allows more empathy among viewers to relate that he was once just like any of us even possibly healthier. To be seeing this man in such a state is heartbreaking but his father's love gives us hope.

Vitaliy's brain is working in creating new neuron connections to bypass the fragment he had lost. It's a slow and long process but I'm perfectly sure the presence of his loving father by his side is crucial to his recovery. Heavens bless both those men!

Not his whole brain, or he wouldn’t be alive! He lost a part of his skull and had a brain injury. But our brains are amazing things, and even with parts missing, the remaining parts often do have the ability to relearn and compensate.
I know two people very well, a close friend and a family member, who both have had severe traumatic brain injuries and have eventually recovered to live an independent life! Both of them were in comas for a long period of time and took many years of physical therapy to slowly relearn everything- but they are alive and living a good quality of life today!!

At least he has good parents I give them that, when I end up with spinal cord injury family only come when needs money, lies and empty promises in return, got after live in a abusive foster family, health care and social service who put the blame on the victim. My schoolmate was worse than Vitaliy, he couldn't breath on his own, and parents cared for 2 years before taking him off life support. 😢 it's hard to do it yourself
