    Brendan's great-grandmother on his father's side was Anna Maria Pollanz, born on July 13, 1890 in Aibl. Her parents were Josef (born March 16, 1857) and Johanna (maiden name was Brauchart). The house in which Josef Pollanz was born still stands today. My great-grandparents bought this house at the beginning of the 1920s. My grandmother was born there.

    Duuude, hearing about the Carpathian front in WW1 and knowing that I'm living in a town that was previously part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and living in a valley in said mountains... chills, literal chills. I mean, I heard the stories about how the mountains that are now ski resorts, were a good battle front during the wars, but to hear about it in an Ancestry video with Brendan Fraser... threw me for a loop.

      Yeah about wolves feeding on the dead and wounded on that front. I think both side even declared a truce in order to focus on killing the many wolves that had developed a taste for human meat. Scary stuff.

    This is the only time I have ever been disappointed watching this show. I was hoping for a dive down the Fraser line. I have Fraser ancestors that come from roughly the same area as Brendan's dad and I've been unable to confirm a connection. I was hoping to uncover we're cousins :) He's been one of my favorite celebs since I was young. Otherwise, I'm very happy for what he had uncovered in his family history. A great story to share. :D

      They usually pick a line the guest doesn't know about or has questions about, or that tells a good story with general historical value like his 2x gr-grandfather going on strike and shooting at the scab. He probably also knows quite a lot about his Fraser line. Looking forward to next week. They don't often have Native American guests and Wes Studi will be on (along with LeVar Burton).

    Is the red dot for St Peter at 0:54 in the right place? It's in modern-day Slovenia, what would have been Carniola, not Carinthia, at the time. There are so many little villages named St. Peter, and so many name changes that have happened in the meantime, that's it's hard to be sure which one is meant. I suspect it's Pivka (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pivka), which was called St. Peter in Krain before WW1.

    • @anav9130
      @anav9130 Рік тому +6

      The red dot is surely in the wrong place. St Peter they are referring to is, I think, in today's Southern Austria, it is one of the areas of Klagenfurt (Slovenian Celovec) where the Slovenian minority lives. Surname Drobesch is surely a Slovenian surname Drobež. So it is rather inaccurate to say that Herman was Austrian...

      The surname of Herman's wife is also a Slovene one (Polanc, Germanised as Pollanz). Should be clear also from his DNA results I guess. Welcome to our Slovenian family, Brendan!

    • @TwinsofSins
      @TwinsofSins Рік тому

      It is quite possible that Pollanz lived in what is now Slovenia before 1776. The place where the Pollanz lived is not far from the Slovenian border. My ancestors also moved from Slovenia to Austria.@@anav9130

  • @DaChaGee

    I think they got the towns wrong. At beginning it says his grandfather was born in St. Peter, Klagenfurt. St. Peter is a district of Klagenfurt. There is no St. Peter in southern Carinthia. The spot they mark on the map is Slovenia, Carinthia never went that far down.

    • @thesoundofmymusic5363
      @thesoundofmymusic5363 7 місяців тому +1

      The actually mean St. Peter bei Grafenstein. Hermann was born there. There is also a parish in Klagenfurt with the same name, but that is not where he was born. But you are right: the place on the map is just somewhere in the south of Europe ;-))

      @@matovicmmilan Nearly half of German Christians are Protestant ( western Germany ) and a large percentage ( ~ 30 % ) atheist ( eastern Germany ). A statistically based observation of faith in Germany completley destroys that argument.
      And us Austrians have just as many links with Bohemia, Hungary and other eastern European nations that estrange us from Germany whose ethnogenesis revolved about other things more in modern times ( see German history ). The only time Austria and Germany were under the same legislative power was between 1938 and 1945. Don't try to teach me my own history and about my own religion.

      Slovenia was known as the Duchy of Carniola - a crownland of the greater realm. The capital was Ljubljana/Laibach. Slovenes held a majority in the Landtag ( the parliament of Carniola ) but ethnically different peoples lived in Carniola as native inhabitants. As part of Cislethania, the inhabitants ( male, at least 26 years old ) could participate in in direct and fair elections ( the reform happened in 1906, before that there was a census election sytem in place ) and send delegates to the Reichsrat based on population numbers. So no, you were not merely called Austrians. In fact you were given minority rights and had your own government structure. Your language, ethnicity, ect was protected by law since 1867.
