I think my most disappointing book this year was "I'll Be Gone in the Dark." I think it was probably my own fault because I was expecting it to be something that it wasn't. I thought it was going to be the story of what led to the capture of a serial killer, but it was more of an autobiography of the author and her sharing her obsession with said serial killer. She shares all the information she has gathered and shares victim stories, but it doesn't really lead to anything. I'm glad it got finished and published, but in the end I thought it was just OK.
Todd here. Nice video Rammel! I enjoy the fact you spoke your mind, and also keeping the video quick and tight you did not ramble on. Happy Holidays to you!
@temolobzhanidze8817 That's really hard to say. I really didn't like it, but I also feel like I'm in the minority. For example, go watch mikes book reviews, and he absolutely loved it. He gave it a glowing review. Then I think Daniel Green hated it 🤷♂️
I consider myself a big Steven King fan. I own all his books. But I didn't like the Talisman. Or the dark tower books. I know it's a bad opposition to take. People lose it. But I love most of his books. I don't like when he writes with a co writer. The books don't have the same feel. I enjoy your videos and love your T-shirts. Have you read Heart shaped Box by Joe Hill? It's so good I recommend it to everyone. And everyone likes it.
I read the Female Man by Joanna Russ. The book is written in the most confusing way that it slowed the pace down horribly for such a short book. There's a good story and concept and themes in there somewhere and I don't believe she is a bad writer from this experience but it is structured so poorly that you can't understand how it got published.
I agree with you on Dark Matter. I have enjoyed a number of multiverse novels and short stories but found this one going from ok/pretty good to horrible. I doubt I'll ever try to read another book by that author. As for my list of worst books: The Female Man takes the #1 spot (dnf), followed by Red Rising books 1-4 (only good thing about them is it's non stop action but really don't understand how anyone would follow Darrow and concept of the razor is absurd let alone a breathable atmosphere on the moon, Mars, etc), Tau Zero could have been a short story but about on par with Billy Summers. Good video although I did enjoy some of the books on your list. I enjoyed The Blade Itself expecially that the "voice" of each of the characters really came through as unique. I have been on the fence on reading the Sun Eater series but have reservations on it given all the comparisons it has with Red Rising (man, I was really disappointed with that series).
My only DNF of the year was Metro 2033. It wasn’t a bad book for me, per sè, but something about the almost literal translation from Russian made it so challenging for me to read that after ~50% I just left it. Great vid, as always!!
@ I actually picked it up based off’f one of your vids recently because it came so highly recommended! Onto the next!! Knees deep with Empire of the Vampire currently and that’s great so far
There's a reason why I read a knight of the seven kingdoms between ASOS and AFFC. It has some of Martin's best writing And has a much smoother transition to the Martian story telling style of AFFC.
I'm honestly with you on Blade Itself. First Law basically reads like one very long book that was split, and Blade Itself is a great first act but is missing something when read on its own. I love differing opinions, im just happy you're not one of the booktubers that just recommends the same three or four series as everyone else.
I was most disappointed by Three Body Problem. Not because the story itself was bad but, because it felt really dry. Maybe because it is a translated work. But it was not fun to read at all.
I was disappointed by Natalie Haynes' Stone Blind, which came out in 2022. Having enjoyed Haynes' Pandora's Jar, an examination of women in Greek myth, I was interested to see what she could do in a novel. Meh. The UK cover advertises it as "Medusa's Story," but in fact she's is barely in it. The majority of the book is focused on bickering gods, which often has little or nothing to do with Medusa's story. There's a bit in the book about how gods don't experience time the way mortals do, but as to why the book is structured in a way where the passage of time is almost impossible to follow, I really don't know. It also dips into some tonally awkward slapstick at times? It's not terrible; Haynes is a solid prose writer. But I would say it was a mess of ideas that never came together for me.
I jumped into PDK this year and read 4 of his books. Honestly DADoES was my least favorite so I guess I was a smidge disappointed since I loved the movie as a kid. Excellent video Sir. Happy Holidays to your and yours.
I was beginning to worry about what you disliked until you got to Dark Matter, what an appalling book. I rank it as the worst book I've read this century. On the other hand, I ranked the Joe Abercrombie books in the reverse order, I liked them all but really loved The Blade Itself; meeting Logen Ninefingers for the first time was a huge buzz for me. The author ranks those books in the order you put them.
If you think Feast was disappoining, imagine waiting 6 years for Dance of Drivel. Maybe will like it better in an eventual reread. Didn't mind Blade so much, did not like ending of series which seemed rushed. I think it was this year but very disappointed in Assassin's Apprentice for a lot of reasons. Read Liveship first which had some good points, but Hobb just not for me.
I felt the EXACT same way about The Blade Itself. I just kept pounding through it and kept going what was everyone talking about? Have the second book bought and it's been sitting on the shelf for so long cause this one just did not land. I'm relieved to hear I'm not crazy
To each their own, I say. 🙂 I ended up enjoying the trilogy, but I'm still a little on the fence whether or not I really jive with Abercrombie's overall writing style.
Just when I think "Man, I just don't agree with many of this guy's opinions!", you COMPLETELY redeem yourself with your The Talisman thoughts. Not a good read for me & Wolf was annoying.
@jackwalter5970 to each their own. I can see where people wouldn't like it. I think I read it at the right timing. Was what I was looking for at that moment
Oh easy. Rama II. And I only say that because I have yet to finish The Garden of Rama and I don't want to claim I have read that absolute trash until I have gotten through it properly. Rendezvous With Rama might seriously be my favourite "realistic" science fiction book I have ever read. It's near perfect in every way. So incredibly intriguing, everything is a huge mystery. And it ends without the reader even being able to really figure out the Ramans at all. Rama II is the opposite. The writing is terrible. The characters are terrible. The plot is terrible. The conclusion is terrible. And as you might have guessed, the next book in the series is terrible. It's almost as if it was written by a different, much worse author. Imagine that.

Thank you. And happy holidays to you too!
My favorite channel on booktube. You have me going down the Philip K Dick rabbit hole right in the middle of my Dark Tower journey.
@@DEVDissers That's awesome! Thank you.
I watched Dark Matter TV show. Was planning to read the book sometime soon, but after this? I don’t know. Should I?
I thought it was decent. Nothing too special. The ending parts were my favorite tho
The book was a DNF for me, but I really enjoyed the tv show.

It's actually a brilliant book, but definitely not for everyone.
After reading all of the Song and Ice and Fire books I forget what happens in each book. It’s just one large book in my mind

I totally agree with you regarding Dark Matter. The first 2/3’s or 3/4’s was great and then it went *completely* off the rails.

I don't know when I'll get to Robin Hobb.
Ah yes, these are the lists I look forward to more than the good stuff.
The Talisman is 30+ years old.WTF?!
Huh... Getting ready to start Dark Matter today for my book club. I loved Recursion.
Well, hopefully, you have a better experience than I did. I also think I'm in the minority in not liking it.

Took me 3 attempts to finish Blade Itself, but I flew through books 2 and 3. Both 5/5.
Yeah, you're not crazy
My disappointing books this year were The Gunslinger, Bird Box and Ring.
@tinypinata505 Oh, ouch. I feel personally attacked by this list lol
@@rammelbroadcasting I really wanted to like them. Trust. Sadly it didn't work out that way.

good content

I DNFd it. It was not that great, IMO.
So if you disagree, the person doesn't know what they're talking about? Lol. Touch some grass.
