    As a Jaguar XJ-S owner myself I completely agree with you Gary. The XJ-S is a thing of beauty. Yes they have unusable rear seats and other quirks but when the sun is shining and your on an open B road you’ll always feel a million dollars. I think the XJ-S should be celebrated more. As you say and I agree. One of the best cars Jaguars ever made. Great video Gary. Keep them coming. 😉👍

    I must admit Gary , I’ve seen your videos on your Corniche and this XJS , and I’m in envy of your practical skills in all aspects of the motor car, there seems no area which you are not prepared to tackle, excellent. I’m slightly surprised you considered the ride of the XJS firmer than the XK8 , the XK8 was based on the XJS , but I suspect the larger low profile tyres on those larger wheels might have contributed to this feel . Love the vids , well done.

    • @classic.obsession
      @classic.obsession  Рік тому +3

      Hi Martin. Yes you could be right. The XJS has the wider wheels fitted and adjustments made so they don’t catch when the steering is on full lock. Turning range isn’t great. It’s almost as if I need to make a 3 point turn when turning into a road!! Although it looks great, I can’t help but think it compromises the ride quality of the way the car was originally designed to turn and handle. Also low profiles give a harder ride.

  • @gregharvie3896
    @gregharvie3896 Рік тому +2

    Hi Gary , from Sydney , Australia , re Roger Moore , he wanted either a Mercedes Benz 230SL, OR a Giant Jaguar mk10, as when they were first released they were the "-IT-" car of the times, as shown in their sales as the early "pesky" 3.8litre version sold near 13,000 units in 3 years , however the later and way better 4.2litre versions took an extra near 7 years to sell another 10,000 odd. Moore's own personal car at the time was a Jag mk10. With the 4.2 liter upgrade whether as a mk10 4.2 or the re named 420G version they all had the better Dunlop brake servo system, the better quick ratio Marles-AdWest variable ratio power steering, and the way way better Borg Warner type8A automatic box, that was an "all bells & whistles" version of what Ford people would call a C4 Cruise-o-matic.
    Your XJS Gary looks fantastic , for 32 years ,I owned a rare long wheelbase 1973 series 1 XJ6 in the identical colors paint/leather as your XJS . I only sold it as I had replaced it with a ultra low mileage 1 owner 1967 Jaguar 420G the ox-blood deep maroon leather interior is so good it looks like it is 1 month old , yes, that stunning, however when you put your foot down the 420G has vastly more power than the XJ from 420G's bronze head, triple carby engine and the mk10/420G car is a half ton heavier , longer & wider than the LWB XJ6. When purchased in late 2012 my 420G had been half resting with it's elderly Doctor owner and just used once weekly to shop, it had a mere 50,025 miles on the odometre with a service history book to match the mileage, in my now almost 10yers ownership I have added an extra 35,000miles to that total and this fantastic old "monster" Jag has been absolutely flawless, totally reliable, sadly it's only downside it is painted old English white but beggars cannot be choosers and an Immaculate car can be forgiven for being in a somewhat boring colour .

    Great work Garry. Interesting what you said about product placement. In the 70's ITV asked British Leyland if they could borrow some of their cars in their new police drama, The Sweeney. BL couldn't be bothered with it all. So they asked Ford. People of a certain age will always associate that show with the Ford Granada. Ford sold loads of them because of that.

    That takes me back - I was fighting these things to the death over 30 years ago! Lovely when they work but I wouldn't have the will to own one now. I also insist on a clean painted workshop floor and use sheets of cardboard to lie on and protect it. I did a water pump on a Z3 last week and found that whilst the original under trays were still there, some of it was held on with cable ties. Refitting it properly with bolts as per factory just makes such a nicer job. I don't have your level of skill and craftsmanship but I like to do a job right. Anyway, subscribed!

    Hi Gary, I note your comment below about the replacement wheels, what are they from? The XJ-S should waft you down the road, not have a hard ride. I think at this time it would have had 15” wheels, possibly XJ-S lattice (they’re a bugger to clean). They may be difficult to get tyres for but should transform the ride.

    I’ve always loved the XJS. Other than the gauge binnacle/steering column area on both the original and the updated version, I believe the interior is one of the most sculpturally satisfying production car interiors ever, for me tied only with the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow/Corniche cars and the SZ Rolls’ and also the old pre-DB7 Aston Martins. Only Brits could make such interiors.

    Hey, just found this channel after rewatching yours and Danny Miller’s/Aaron’s storyline in Emmerdale - by far my all time favourite storyline shown on the show for a multitude of reasons. Your acting was absolutely phenomenal, I still feel genuine anger anytime Gordon is so much as mentioned on the show - it’s not often a character on a show makes me feel like that. I can’t imagine it’s easy playing such a vile character but it’s an extremely important role to take on. I just wanted to let you know that your work on Emmerdale is still appreciated today (despite how angry Gordon makes me and many others) - it’s great to see that you’re still doing well!

    Wonderful Gary, it really is one of the nicest XJS’s around. I was one of the few when t was launched that really loved the controversial flying buttresses. When you think what it had to follow I think they really had to make it radically different so as to make its own statement after the iconic E-type. And you did a fantastic job on your friends XK8. I wonder if it’s possible to restore the finish on the wood in that one, the lacquer has gone milky. I bet it’s a water based lacquer as opposed to the oil based lacquer on your XJS. I notice with the water based ones they seem to gain that milky haze where as the old style as in yours keeps the depth of gloss.
    I’m really looking forward to the Mercedes, always loved those. Thanks so much for such wonderful videos and all the best to you and your family.

    In the United States where i live, these cars had such a bad reputation for reliability issues through most of the 20 years that they were made. But near the end, 1992-1996 they improved dramatically probably because Ford Motor Company took over Jaguar by that point. Personally i just love the early models from 1975-1985. Even today, i could stare at that car for hours. It's the most beautiful car in my eyes. Even nicer than the E-type.

    • @classic.obsession
      @classic.obsession  Рік тому +1

      You know they do. But if wider wheels have been fitted, they have to be adjusted so the tyre doesn’t make contact with the arch..giving you a smaller turning lock..

      I think the government charges less duty on a car that is built with more than two seats. A two seater sports will require more duty to be paid than a saloon. I stand to be corrected!! Regards.

    Why don't you get some of the finger condoms sorry latex finger covers to you washing hands continually.
    Try a Honda V4 mc engine with hardly any gap, and a radiator that you can only move 10mm.
    And with hands that struggle in XL gloves for being to tight, my hand look like it had been in a fight with a wild cat.
    Patrick MacNee drove a Jaguar XJC with Broadspeed arches , it ruined the cars looks unless it was out on the tracks.

      Original though…with jaguar stamped into the side of them. Apparently very rare and a phenomenally expensive extra when ordered at the factory. I kinda like little quirky differences added by the original owners. Like an extension of their personalities and echoing the decade and style of the time they were built. Regards.

      Hi Gary and thx for your reply. I’ve only ever seen one Xjs on the road with them , (it might have been this actual car! ) but I always imagined them to be either converted from another car or an aftermarket add on , I never realised these were a factory option
