There is all different prices concerning Boafeng, they aren't all under $30 USD, maybe the 5 watt but anything higher, going to cost you more than $60 unless it's used. i have the 8watt, which costed me $60 USD on Amazon which came with two batteries, a Mic and 3 difference entanna's. @@virgilwalker683 That'll depend on your terrain and other factors. You did correctly by using a better antenna like the SRH805S, as mentioned. I don't think an $80 radio is ever going to be the most recommended radio to new hams for me. The great thing about a Baofeng is that it is so cheap, a new ham can get one and it is easier to get into ham. I really feel that this is made as a first upgrade from a Baofeng. This is a radio to say, "You enjoy using your UV-5R, get this as a good upgrade."
@@nimblehealer199 which is not illegal for the user. Baofeng can and does get in trouble for it, but there is no law against using such a radio as long as it is certified, which all Baofengs are.
Just ordered today 4/3/2021 from R and L for $84.99. It’s $150 on eBay and not in stock on Amazon. R and L have been around for years. My father-in-law ordered stuff from them alot. He was a Ham and ran two cellular tower companies. He loved their gear.
Using the Dual-Watch mode (VFO A & VFO B). Which can be confirmed with a separate radio (TX). The Light on the TOP of the FT-65R will show a Green light when receiving on the primary VFO & show a BLUE light when receiving on the other VFO. The Dual Watch (A & B) only works in VFO mode. Not MEMORY mode. The FT-4XR does not support dual-watch in VFO mode nor in MEMORY mode. VFO B supports the FM Broadcast Band on both radios. VFO A does not support the FM Broadcast Band..

FT-60R was my first HT purchase, have Baofeng's but in my community service events FT60R is front line, Baofeng's are backup. I have the Yaesu SSM-63A headset for the FT-60R for such environments. Never had to go to Baofeng backup. If this one has a headset would be my best choice for backup. 73 de NZ5TX
Just bought one of these a few days ago. So far I’m really impressed . Mine does say made in Japan. Chinese items are not always garbage when the product comes from a reputable source such as Yaesu. Just a small critique for you. At least go and check out the manual online so you understand all the features and how to operate the radio. You mentioned a few things this lacked but actually do exist. Otherwise go overview to help me master this radio.
Man this with a alpha numeric display, even a basic one like a UV5R, I would be all over it. I just am not as comfortable on a pure number only display
The only way it could be a Baofeng killer is if it was cheaper in price, becouse i will mach my UV-82 to any dual band out there and the price cant be beat, and ya a yaesu are nice i like all metal radeos my FT-470 is nice dual band and repeater, i got yaesu, kenwood, maxon, motorolla, superstar 3900 gold plus, but i grab my uv-82, and they all are made in china, the same Chinese company that makes them all has no-name copys of them all. if my baofeng gets damaged i dont worry like the high price radeo,s plus they all have been over charging for years plus u get a high cost radeo and u have to pay to mod it the Chinese radeo,s all most are all open, my TH-9800 does more stuff stock then most still have not discoverd every thing it can do becouse they wood not let them in, and ya it does 11meters.
Buying the ft 65r today based on your review. I have a boafeng programming cable that works flawlessly with my boafeng and wouxun radios. Do you think it will work with the yaesu? Thanks.
I have one. Thanks for this Video! I got it last Year but still can’t program it or find the weather function. Plus CHIRP can’t help and I don’t have Windows !
Does anyone know if an older Yaesu speaker mic, MH-12 A2B, would work with a FT-65R? I have the mic and should have the radio in about 2 weeks. It would be nice to know if they are compatible, don't want to mess up a new radio.
Most of the things from around the world are *Made in China* , that does not mean low quality, if the company hires a Chinese company to manufacture their product it has to be with their standards, not the factory standards, and I bet *Yaesu* has some pretty high standards when it come to their quality of their products. This radio is in my wish list by the way, an upgrade from my *Baofeng GT3 Mark II* ?
Jason I just wish they made an SMA coming out of the radio instead of the antenna because you're limited buying good antennas and another thing is why don't they make the keypad light up what if you're walking your dog at night and you want to see and navigate the keypad doesn't light up years ago they used to make these radios that light up now they're charging hundreds of dollars to buy a radio a handy talking with a keypad that lights up but you got to spend $600 I mean come on maybe you can write the azu and tell him I called them I called tech support they said they would do something they would tell the company but with your help you have a lot of pullsee if we can do some change
Thats why i buy TYT,Retevis. But i dont like this Yaesu's PTT button sticking out. So i'm not buying it. My old trusty Icom IC-T70 ,and Tyt HT still feels better in the hand. I hope that Yaesu designed a HT with 3A battery, and no digital modulation. Just f3e analog vhf,uhf and option to set the output power on 0.1 watts for use with Allstar Hamvoip hotspot. What would be the difference between the Boafeng UV-5R 8 watt to the Yaesu FT-65R?
The Yaesu has a much, much better receiver. And lots less splatter with transmitting.
@@HamRadio2 what about distance? how far can you communicate the Yaesu? ie 1 mile, 2 mile or more? On my boafeng, i can chat maybe a 1 mile or 2 and that using Diamond Antenna SRH805S.I live in Buffalo NY, so it's city where i live in.
@@virgilwalker683 That'll depend on your terrain and other factors. You did correctly by using a better antenna like the SRH805S, as mentioned. This Yaesu, along with others, has a better receiver than the Baofeng does, so you will be able to hear farther, which means you will be able to use it at greater distances also.
Its a real good radio !!! It is my radio that I use now and my first one I got
Unfortunately, I just bought the FT-65R I did not know it is made in china. Not happy about that!!
The later versions should be from Japan
@@HamRadio2Thank you for the reply. It could be I happened to see china on the battery. I should receive the radio this coming Tuesday and will get back to you.
That thing has a fatal flaw, imo. No battery eliminator. -_- Come on Yaesu.
Most Baofengs are not legal. They have spurious RF emissions
R&L is one of my favorites
$99 now, even though it's older.
Is it $25? Then it would be a fang killer...
Sometimes quality is more important than spending the absolute smallest amount out of your pocket.
@@HamRadio2 you said it better than me. LOL
@@HamRadio2 that is why you don't a cheap torque wrench...harbor freight cough-cough
Nice radio dual band very good giga parts 89 bucks 👍
I just looked at the back of mine, its says "Made in Japan" whats the difference?
Jason Gray video thanks for sharing 💕
Thanks for watching!
I had just got the ft-65r mine says made in Japan
Some of them do. I guess there are multiple factories. Mine clearly says Made in China, and others have commented about some saying Japan or China.
Shockingly, my FT-65R says made in JAPAN on my label.
All of them are made in Japan now, according to Yaesu. This was changed after this video released
Mine says MADE IN JAPAN.
Ft65r but the label on the radio is ft65. Now where did the letter r go?
Its on the box
Suggest you read manual
was made in japan 2 years ago
I'll bet you that is a rebadged Baofeng UV 82HP. .... Now where's the flashlight?
No its nowhere close to the UV82
Is there a difference between the 65 and 65R? The title says 65R but the box in the video says 65
No, they are the same radio
@@nimblehealer199 i already received mine and found my box says 65 but the label on my HT says 65R lol
WFM - Wide FM and that's for receiving fm broadcast stations.
Yeah but why wide?
@@HamRadio2 because it's wide bandwidth
@@burungbaguette It is also broadcast and RX-only, why not call it that? I see no reference to "wideband" on any of my car stereos..
@@HamRadio2 Probably because us HAMs are aware of it being WFM mode.. but I see your point on car stereos.. Anyway, good videos. Good content. I hope i don't upset anybody here. Have a good one. 73 cheerio. DE YD1RRK
@@burungbaguette Nah man, you are good. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Do you have a video on checking the signal of this radio?
Not yet
I just picked one of these up last week. Mine reads "Made in Japan" inside.
They are all now made in Japan.
I saw this when you posted this months ago. I am going to pick one up.
good beat
Well after watching this a few times and seeing the FT-65R on sale at R&L I pulled the trigger. Should be here tomorrow so can't wait to compare it to my UV-9R.
Nice!
@@HamRadio2 Jason you were right on the money. By far the best sub $100 HT I have seen and used!!!
This type of Radios below his standard
who's standard?
FT-60R was my first HT purchase, have Baofeng's but in my community service events FT60R is front line, Baofeng's are backup. Have to see if there is a headset that will work with this FT-65R because, like my Wings Over Houston airshow, headset is a must, as any noisy environment. I have the Yaesu SSM-63A headset for the FT-60R for such environments. Never had to go to Baofeng backup. If this one has a headset would be my best choice for backup. 73 de NZ5TX
weird! my ft-65 i just got today says made in japan!
I've heard some folks say that. Mine clearly says Made in China. I guess they outsource them to different places.
@s3v Where was yours purchased?
I just purchased one from DX Engineering, it says "made in Japan" on the radio.
I think it might have alpha-numeric in the memory mode. I didn't check that.
It does have that option
I am making a video on manually programming soon♡♡♡
Great, inform me when You do!
@@jwb60 I absolutely will :) thank you ♡♡♡
since when is the baofeng the radio to beat?
Since everyone buys them due to their low price instead of looking for a quality rig
What? Made in China? Should i buy those orr not????😮😮😮😮
They are no longer made in China
@@HamRadio2 ok thanks alot, so if i order that FT65 iz should be written 'made in Japan'?
Greetings from Croatia(Hrvatska) E.U.
Should be
Does anyone know if an older Yaesu speaker mic, MH-12 A2B, would work with a FT-65R?
I need radios that can hold all day.
do you know how to program split 1005 in the ft-65 we have a repeater rx 147.495 and the tx is 146.490
Why is it 89$ on the R&l link and 130$ on Amazon that fucked up IMO
Amazon prices are typically higher
@@HamRadio2 ohh OK I gotch thanks for the reply I'm new to all this and looking for a radio to get been watching your vids and others so I can figure out what HT to get
I love my FT65R. KE8OKD
Hi Jason Love your channel, can you tell me how I can listen to airband frequency I live 15 min from Orlando I use to do this on my ft3 any assistance will be greatly appreciated thank you for your help
Just bought this radio and studying for my technician test. A little late in the game but can't wait to get on board with the HAM fam!
