Huge plumes of smoke have their consequences. Grandmother lived next to the C&NW tracks in Chicago. When she died, and her home was cleaned up and sold, the greasy soot was hiding everywhere. Not that the steam age wasn't fascinating to a little boy.
Question: Why is the other engine a part of the train? may be both, spare in case something happen - notice that there is no parts and machineshops available for this type of trains on hand. There is also problems with water supply and coal. No coal and water feeders on every station anymore. It has to be fed manually by hoses and pumps. In greater moves it can be also used to reduce wear. Using 4014 to pull a short passenger train and a deadweight diesel is like using a full sized semi truck to move out of an average college dorm. 4014 should be pulling fully loaded freight trains 100+ cars long.

... To me, the whistle sounds somewhat odd.... like there's a modern-day loud vibration that is heard when the whistle is actuated... which changes the expected pure sound.
Its there as a backup *just* incase the steam engine has any sort of issue along the way. It makes things much faster and easier to have the diesel there and ready to go as a failsafe. Thank you for watching, and the comment.
One resides in the Smithsonian Institution. Heavy 5 star passenger service. Big Boy heavy Rocky mountain coal service. Crescent Limited high speed 5 star passenger.
By this time 4014 has shown its reliability, so why is the diesel loco still in the string? I thot the diesel was to haul the load if 4014 should "break down" during the early break in/trial period. Is there some other less obvious reason for it?
@@RailfanJason This makes me more curious. For the minimal load - few passenger cars and the tenders, it would seem a 762,000lb loco should have enuf tractive effort to stop - maybe not quite on a dime but.... Is it because they DO NOT want the possibility of wearing flat spots on any drivers? That would make sense. ????
@@johnsonford429 This makes sense. I knwe they had upgraded from coal to fuel oil in the restorarion. I guess adding electronics would have been impossible . Thanks. PS those electronic devices were added AFTER I worked for the B&O back in the 50's. LOL

That is the sound of the side rods knocking. It is normal for a steam locomotive, especially when there is no load being put on it. Because the driving wheels have to bend around corners and move over a bump the tolerances in the rod bearings are loose to allow for that.
I agree. I understand why it's there, but I'd love to see a towed caboose instead. The know-how that built and maintained it is largely gone, now. I'm certain that the old-timers knew limits and tricks of running that are lost today.
Instead of a modern Union Pacific locomotive in the lashup they should’ve had another Union Pacific big boy in it’s place the modern locomotive really looks out of place
I wish that the Great Northern 4-8-4 which is on display in Havre, Montana would be restored to operating condition! UP is NOT my favourite railroad company because it forced the Southern Pacific, Missouri Pacific and other roads out of existence!

Somebody told me that the engines only running on one boiler and they ran the steam just to run the whistle and in the front valves somebody told me the diesel was helping push it don't want to believe that I love 4014 just want to hear it chug more
Thanks for the comment! Big Boy is running under its own power, and it is fully functional in every way. The diesel is there only as a backup, and Big Boy is doing all of the work.
That's cool just sounded a little off to me after listening to a bunch of videos of Steam Engines I listen to a lot of them but I love Big Boy 4014 I Love trains, grew up next to the Kansas City Southern main line as a kid seen a lot of cool stuff back when I still had my eyesight would love to hear 4014 in person
Hell Yeah!
... To me, the whistle sounds somewhat odd.... like there's a modern-day loud vibration that is heard when the whistle is actuated... which changes the expected pure sound.
Thanks for the comment! I truly enjoy the whistle on the 4014; however, I'm not an expert on how its actuated.
Why do railroads insist on putting a diesel locomotive in the consist when a steam locomotive is leading the way?
Its there as a backup *just* incase the steam engine has any sort of issue along the way. It makes things much faster and easier to have the diesel there and ready to go as a failsafe. Thank you for watching, and the comment.
@@SD457500 I figured. Thanks.
Norfolk Southern should rebuild the 4-6-2 Crescent Limited. Heavy Pacific.
The main purpose of the diesel is to supply dynamic braking for the train. Dynamics are something steamers are not capable of producing.
Frederick Wise the diesel is used for the track signals for the computer seen by the main traffic office ,, back in the day there was no such thing
@@johnsonford429 This makes sense. I knwe they had upgraded from coal to fuel oil in the restorarion. I guess adding electronics would have been impossible . Thanks. PS those electronic devices were added AFTER I worked for the B&O back in the 50's. LOL
Good see the old girl goin again ,, when I was a kid coming back from out west there was maybe 4 or 5 challengers on a side track in Staples Mn and my dad stopped to look at and took pictures of ,, they probably on there way to get scrapped sorry to say that would of been in about 1964 or so,, I’m glad UP restored this one !! We have one in the museum in Green Bay, there’s one in a park in Cheyenne , one on a hill side when you come into Omaha and one in the Henry Ford Museum in Mn ,, the ones that I’ve seen out side of 3985 that must be getting something done with I hope !!
What is that clonking sound I hear as it travels by is some thing loose
That is the sound of the side rods knocking. It is normal for a steam locomotive, especially when there is no load being put on it. Because the driving wheels have to bend around corners and move over a bump the tolerances in the rod bearings are loose to allow for that.
Hell no. All steam locomotives do that. It's the side rods.
Where's the bathroom in it?
Thanks for the comment, and good question! As far as I know, Big Boy doesn't have one!
When the 4014 burned coal, the coal bunker in the tender served more than one function!

It's a shame it has to have a backup engine in the tow. Almost an insult to this grand old (new) Goliath.
Raymond Bermudez the diesel isn’t pulling. They’re just using the onboard generator to give electrical power to the coaches.

Thank you 🙏 for the information much appreciated my friend

Thanks for the comment! Nah, just Big Boy's way of him telling everyone to get out of the way.
I wish that the Great Northern 4-8-4 which is on display in Havre, Montana would be restored to operating condition! UP is NOT my favourite railroad company because it forced the Southern Pacific, Missouri Pacific and other roads out of existence!
Bring these back, converted to LNG and bingo... no more running in the red for the Railroads.
