    Anarcho punk! The Sex Pistols sang about anarchy in the UK, Crass lived it.
    Drummer Penny Rimbaud had been squatting in Dial House in Essex, doing various art projects, some political of the anarchiet variety.
    He had an open door policy (he still has).
    Young Steve Ignorant wanted to start a punk band and Penny was the only one he knew with a drum set.
    The rest of the band got together over several months in '77.
    Over the course of the 7 years this bwnd existed ('77-'84) they were all living in Dial House.
    The first song on this album Reality Asylum is a blasphemic poem that was taken off the album by the folks at the (catholic) Irish pressing plant.
    The band then setvup their own record label Crass Records to prevent that from happening again.
    The original pressing (with Reality Asylum replaced by two minutes of silence, thanks to the pressing plant) had the first song renamed The Sound Of Free Speech.
    I'm sure that any copy of those first 5000 (all they could afford to have pressed was 5000 copies, hence the title of the album) will cost a fortune.

    Justin, you are SO good at this! Anyone who can get me to listen to punk with honest consideration, is a genius in my book!
    I honestly learn more from you than any other reactor!
    (Disclaimer: That doesn't mean I don't love the other reactors I support, because I wouldn't watch them, much less support them, if I didn't appreciate them and enjoy their reactions!! Just sayin'!)
    But you are very special, IMO, in everything about the way you treat your reactions! You pretty much give me everything - EVERYTHING - that I come to a music reaction video for! Frankly, I think that watching your videos is a master class in "how to create an effective reaction vid"
    I ended up having an appreciation for this song, and the genre, that I had never been able to develop on my own! I will listen again, even though it will be by force of will, just like it was the firt time I watched! But who knows, with your engaging, interesting and INTERESTED tuition, I could actually become a FAN of punk!
    Thank you for all the love and care you put into your reactions!

    Not really "real punk". Just one side of punk. Not really my cup of tea but the best thing about punk it made loads of people start playing music. I had a few punkbands. The second one rehearsed a few hours, wrote some songs and played some covers. Next day we played live. It was probably horrible because we couldn't really play but we were proud of what we accomplished despite that. And we loved to play. Still dabbling with music today thanks to punk.

    Crass were a big deal in the UK in the early 80's. Their style of music became known as Anarcho-Punk and also included bands like Flux Of Pink Indians, Poison Girls and Subhumans. There was a split between these bands and the more coventional punk bands. They were very attached to the New Age Traveller scene, which I was a part of. Basically with high unemployment, a Tory government and the mood of the times with riots in a lot of cities, people converted old buses or ambulances and travelled around the country to various free festivals. The main one was Stonehenge, with free festival stalwarts like Hawkwind, Here And Now and Man now playing alongside these emerging bands. I saw both Crass and Poison Girls at Stonehenge, unfortunately in Crass's case some Angels who'd been acting like wankers all weekend dragged them off stage and beat them up. Crass's stuff was quite simple to start off with, it was all about the lyrics. They were often derided for being old hippies, and 'middle class' to boot, an even worse crime in this class obsessed country. In truth though they were the only punk band that walked it like they talked it. God knows how they ever earned any money, selling albums at a budget price, a lot of their gigs were Benefits or free. They all lived communally in a place called Dial House near Epping Forest in Essex. They had their own record label, and gave a lot of other bands a helping hand. They had the British government so worried at one stage during the Falklands war that there was an MI5 file on them. Penny Rimbaud (drummer & main lyric writer) and a few others still live at Dial House, offering workshops and living basically as rhey always did. 'There is no authority but yourself'.

I kinda regret it but the 2 month holiday in the Philippines I got out of the proceeds makes up for the regret I reckon. It was only a stencilled bedsheet after all. When you listen to Punk music and then you find Crass you get to the conclusion that Crass is the only real Punk band ! It has the whole pure spirit of Punk ! It is Pure and Inteligent. And their album "Stations of the Crass" is a real jewel of talent snd pureness.

    I would like to add my votes for X-Ray Spex, Anti-Nowhere League and Stiff Little Fingers. Some other suggestions are The Ruts-Babylon is Burning, Sham 69-Borstal Breakout & Angels with Dirty Faces and The Rezillos-Somebody's Gonna get their Head Kicked in Tonight & Top of the Pops.

    Try some pop punk next like The Buzzcocks- Ever fallen in Love or The Undertones- Teenage Kicks. One does not listen to punk for more musically, but less musically.

    I like this well enough, but I would've gone with something more obvious like Do They Owe Us a Living? I love the message though 😆 For most I would think punk vocals are repulsive at first and potentially forever if you don't give them a chance. I'm glad you're getting used to them though because they're great regardless of their lack of/total rejection of conventional appeal. Soon you may even like them instead of just tolerating them! 😂

      @@JustJP Their first 2 singles are also exceptional if you are a person that is into the 'Anarcho Punk' genre. For me personally I can't think of a better album. You are too young though to truly appreciate what it was actually like here in the UK 1977 - 1984 (The 7 years of Crass being around and playing live). Still it's good that people still discover these bands even after all this time.

    For the lyrics, the singing is perfect, I think. Switching between anger and contempt as it goes. I think you made me like it a bit more than I did, right away. (Wasn't hearing all the lyrics. I think I might be going deaf.)
    *The Cure* (maybe before they got called "post" punk?) also have a song called *So What* that you might like. (Might be a good bridge between styles to help you on your way to liking at least some punk.) ua-cam.com/video/NSTrE7EDcts/v-deo.html
    (The vocals are much more punk than the "Happy Cure" phase music that most fans love them for, though.)

    • @sicko_the_ew
      @sicko_the_ew 2 роки тому

      *Cardiacs* don't have a song called So What, but they do have a fairly punk (with perhaps that little bit extra you were looking for) song called *Hopeless* in which instead of anger, they use something more like irritation (?) from the days when they were shitting, sicking babies. (That's what Tim said. I heard it with at least one of my ears, and that was quite likely the good one.)
      ua-cam.com/video/sEEw42wrwJY/v-deo.html
      (It's a musical shark swimming in the Sea of Punk - a big, ugly shark that you have to kiss - which is an obscure reference you'll hopefully one day feel wasn't excessive, considering I'd already called the song a shark, all hidden away under the water till it bites up with lots of sharp teeth at you.)

    • @sicko_the_ew
      @sicko_the_ew 2 роки тому

      *Icky Qualms* is almost exactly punk (right down to the anger - although it's anger about icky qualms, which perhaps dilutes it a bit). Not quite exactly, though. ua-cam.com/video/g2Cam5dH0mo/v-deo.html
      (It took me maybe two years to get comfortable - and start to appreciate - Tim Smith's vocals. How? There's that something a bit odd and interesting in a song like Icky Qualms, so I fairly often came to listen to it again. Take a mix of "odd" songs that have some kind of something that you can't find anywhere else - like nowhere else - and a few other songs that are just plain nice - like their hit, Is This the Life (especially the long version) - or Helen and Heaven - and somehow that leads to familiarity, and no contempt.)

    When punk hit I was the perfect age to be completely pulled in and immersed in the culture. I was not, and to this day I really don't see the appeal. I saw no excitement or interest in the idea of abandoning the lush layers of production of Yes, Queen, ELO, Boston, Rush, etc for a stripped down, angry and simplistic style of music. It's not for me.
