It's been something of an unspoken rule since the beginning of Stranger Things that practical effects should be used as much as possible. I'd imagine this actually makes certain scenes harder to set up and film but we hugely appreciate the mammoth effort that goes into production. Can't say I'm surprised that Robert Englund was making suggestions to the artists when they were making him up as Victor Creel. A huge part of his acting career has involved prosthetics and make-up, so it would be weird if he hasn't learned a thing or two about it!
Practical effects and sets are amazing but that requires lot of money which is a privilege only few people get. Many don't have the budget to make things for real and have to rely on post production to get things done. Making movies and shows is not easy. If you don't have a money problem, every filmmaker will make things practically as much as possible.
Yep, when it comes to grotesque and horror Robert is a living legend, he was Jamie sitting around while some of the best of this craft did their thing, he probably can talks hours about all the creative solutions he witnessed over the years.
@@venerexate1841 well it’s not that necessarily, we just prefer something real and tangible over something that’s made in a computer. Don’t get me wrong, CGI monsters can be good when don’t right, but most of the time they aren’t as threatening as the real deal. Just look at how successful The Thing was in 19&2; all of the effects for the monster were practical.
@@venerexate1841 Personally, I like practical effects for monsters because it makes the creature look more believable. It is also easier for actors/actresses to interact with them.
@@venerexate1841 going forward cgi-only won't be bad, given the fact that current day cgi is advanced enough to look lifelike, but cgi monsters always used to look like crap, any movie/show before 2010 just looks like crap. look at the horrible dwayne johnson mummy scene, or the older xmen movies where wolverines claws are at twice the rendering resolution of the rest of the scene making it look like super obvious cgi
CGI can never replace how good practical effects look, glad they went with them for this character. It's also better for the actors performance when he's actually there looking like that and they aren't reacting to a person in a green suit with a funny helmet and sensors all over them. Some of the actors were genuinely scared when working with him, Millie Bobby Brown actually cried the first time she did a scene with him because it freaked her out so much.
The dedication, calculations, passion, and love that go into creating these prosthetics are truly outstanding, everyone who had a hand in crafting Vecna's terrifying look y'all have my utmost respect and admiration. Stranger Things 4 lived up to my wildest expectations and I'm so thrilled for Vol 2!
No matter how many times and different versions of this whole process I watch. I'm so amazed and impressed by the efforts put in. The whole team behind it, Jamie, the other show staffs.. Respect..🙌
One of the best examples of a great collaboration between artists and an actor to bring a creature/being to life. Some performances can be limited because the aesthetics of a person can interrupt the suspension of disbelief. Looks may even pigeon hole actors into roles so it is amazing to hear Jamie be able to transcend and show his skill.
Imagine carrying 22-33lbs of prosthetics on your head and shoulders (and more weight throughout each body part),have dentures and white contacts after 8hours of application and still having to put your energy into acting 💀
It's not just that they literally got the same people that did the Night King, it's not just that they made a completely malleable suit paired with only the right amount of CGI needed, it's not only that they actually used the same actor for both Vecna and Henry, it's that they did it all. They literally did everything right to create something horrifically beautiful. Dude hats off like beyond hats off.
"because of the character, Jamie liked to listen to some quite aggressive, quite intense, death metal, it would be quite hard core" I think that may just be his taste in music considering he was the lead guitarist/ vocalist in Counterfeit...😂
I was absolutely convinced it was Robert Englund voicing Vecna until halfway through my second viewing of season 4 and I was absolutely FLOORED to find out it wasn't him.
Amazing job! IMO practical effects will always look better than CGI, so I'm very happy they decided to go this way. And kudos to Jamie for going through with it!
Bro I genuinely thought Vecna was animated when I first started watching. When I learned that it was an actual person playing him it totally wrinkled my brain. Like the talent some people have is ridiculous.
My jaw dropped when I heard him muttering in the Vecna voice. He can REALLY transform. And kudos for him doing it entirely physically covered - body, teeth, and all.
this is so impressive! I think the rest of the crew besides actors often doesn't get enough recognition, but I'm happy to learn about the process of creating this amazing costume :)
Jamie was completely unrecognizable and did such an amazing job, but I love how they managed to get Robert to play Victor Creel. The duffer brothers must’ve been squealing like little girls when they found out he was on board. He’s such a staple actor in the horror genre.
as soon as i saw one in the laboratory i was like, “is that jamie campbell bower??” everyone on here is commenting about how great of a performance he did, but not a lot of people realize just how much. not only was he doing a voice for vecna, but he was doing an american accent on top of it all. jamie is british. his american accent, even just as one and not vecna, was incredible.
You guys did an amazing job with both characters, immediately when I saw them I could tell how well they were done practically with minor digital. Loved them both.
This is incredible! The amount of detail and care that was put into these costumes it must’ve been tedious but a lot of fun to create especially the Vecna prosthetic. Also you can’t tell at all that Robert has a prosthetic over his face, I mean I know he does but you can’t see the lines at all. It’s absolutely incredible
This is why I loved the show Face Off!! So much talent in creating a character like this! Those artists make so much come to life…it’s one of the main reasons I watch shows like these
I’m going to be honest. When he appears on the screen for the first time, I was extremely scared. And it reminded me of when I was a kid and how I would be scared of certain things. And for each time the character came into view, I would think what I would do in that scenario. That’s how much it scared me. I couldn’t handle that in real life. I would start hyperventilating and crying- seriously. Congrats of scaring the crap out of me.
Not only was the outfit INSANE, to know that it took you guys 8+ hours each application time is mind blowing! Then the cherry on top is thinking how Jamie not only sat there throughout, not a single complaint, and you got to witness him fully become Vecna in his mind also is amazing!!

Jamie is insane for this, huge props to him
Vecna snatched that glossy everyday look 💅🏾💕 our dark king💀
I love that he had his own makeup palette - MAC cosmetics get on board and give us Vecna style at Sephora!

D R just borrow amber heards bruise kit
Vecna is really intriguing and terrifying to look at in the show. Also Robert Englund make up looked real good!

The power of Art & how they bring it on screen with such perfection. Just amazing. :)

No wonder Vecna looked so good! It really works well when it's not a 100% CG. It's a great mix of practical and digital effects

Talk about a dieing art being kept alive. This crew is amazing and I hope to see them tackle other projects in the future.

Incredible practical effects mixed with an amazing performance. It will stand the test of time unlike CGI only monsters
Why do people have such a problem with cgi-only monsters again?
@@sammyexx oh, yeah totally. Practical effects were a much better Idea before VFX software took over.
Mad respect for everyone involved in this. Such an amazing villian, so terrifying!

There's no way I could wear prosthetics like that, at all, nevermind for hours and hours. I think I'd have a panic attack with all that stuck to me.
same. you have to be very dedicated to your role to put up with that for sure
Thats why he is so amazing, truly professional.

I'm betting that Jamie's hand didn't hurt after wearing the prosthetic hand compared to everyone else's because he's a guitar player
I know nothing about this man but my thought was something along those lines. Cool to know I was right. lol
He just didn't complain i think, literally hours wearing it

Jamie made THAT voice himself?!!! Incredible!!!!! I thought they added some special effects in addition to his real voice!!
The dedication, calculations, passion, and love that go into creating these prosthetics are truly outstanding, everyone who had a hand in crafting Vecna's terrifying look y'all have my utmost respect and admiration. Stranger Things 4 lived up to my wildest expectations and I'm so thrilled for Vol 2!

i need to see jamie in full vecna get up but not in character at all 😭
Check twitter there are lot of memes are going on 😭
have you seen the picture where he’s sipping Starbucks while in makeup
ive seen the memes but i want to see his personality through it my brain cant even imagine it
Imagine him doing his insane in the membrane insane in the brain dance in the vecna get up lmao 🤣
@@ninbugs Same!!! I wanna hear his British accent come out of that scary thing, that would bring much joy
This is why Face Off was one of my favorite shows. Such an amazing, beautiful artwork to do what these individuals do.
Omg I forgot about that show! I loved watching it!!!
I loveeeed that show! Miss it so much.
omg. I would love to see outtakes/bloopers with Vecna.
I am super impressed with the whole team... ideas.. putting it together and also for Jamie to carry it....!!!
Love hearing a professional passionately talk about their craft
Imagine carrying 22-33lbs of prosthetics on your head and shoulders (and more weight throughout each body part),have dentures and white contacts after 8hours of application and still having to put your energy into acting 💀
I could never 😭The full sclera contact lenses alone would kill me after 10 hours of shooting.
For millions of dollars I’m sure it’s worth it lol
@@Jiranu5000 Millions of dollars is very likely overestimating it, he wasn't even in every episode.

I literally thought it was CGI watching the show, but seeing how they used SFX make up like they used to do is so refreshing.
this stuff is so interesting. the craftsmanship that goes into doing this is insane. it's art.
I KNEW IT WAS HIS VOICE knowing Jamie's voice is naturally deep to deepen it shouldn't be that hard to do for him which makes it so awesome
I’ve been waiting for this video! It’s so fascinating! Jamie Campbell Bower did a fantastic job, ST4 is incredible! Can’t wait for V2!!
Fr, and you can see how much passion went behind every little aspect.
"because of the character, Jamie liked to listen to some quite aggressive, quite intense, death metal, it would be quite hard core"
I think that may just be his taste in music considering he was the lead guitarist/ vocalist in Counterfeit...😂
I was so so excited to find out this was SFX and not CG !! I hope this special art never dies. Vecna is truly is a masterpiece
Props to the SFX artists and Jamie for this masterpiece.
jamie is such a talented actor. so impressive. he really deserves all the recognition he’s been getting lately.
The makeup artist fangirling over Robert is adorable.
i never knew jamie was the one doing the deep voice too omg that was insane
My jaw dropped when I heard him muttering in the Vecna voice. He can REALLY transform. And kudos for him doing it entirely physically covered - body, teeth, and all.
Props to everyone involved in this process, they absolutely killed it!
Vecna isn't only iconic, it's legendary. Love how dark this season is.
this is so impressive! I think the rest of the crew besides actors often doesn't get enough recognition, but I'm happy to learn about the process of creating this amazing costume :)
Jamie is so awesome and the design team is so amazing. So much respect that this isn't all CGI.
I MADE A VERY BIG CHART DRAWING ALL THE STRANGER THINGS CHARACTERS.... IT TOOK 30 DAYS AND IT WAS READY TODAY | it's here on the channel...
Seriously this show is just unmatched.
Jamie Campbell Bower is so talented to pull this off. I hope he gets more roles
I really respect that they used mostly practical!
Hear me out: Vecna is going to go down as one of the most iconic villains ever, especially if they use him more after this season.
Most iconic ever😭😭😭
I love how much the SFX artist raves about Jamie
And this is why practical effects are so important. Too much cgi would've made this character less terrifying so this was a perfect balance.
I wish the same would've been applied to the other creatures
Jamie was completely unrecognizable and did such an amazing job, but I love how they managed to get Robert to play Victor Creel. The duffer brothers must’ve been squealing like little girls when they found out he was on board. He’s such a staple actor in the horror genre.
These are some extremely top tier practical effects.
You know you did a perfect job when your suit can stand up to extreme close-ups just constantly.
This is so cool!!! Can't wait for Part 2 btw
as soon as i saw one in the laboratory i was like, “is that jamie campbell bower??”
everyone on here is commenting about how great of a performance he did, but not a lot of people realize just how much.
not only was he doing a voice for vecna, but he was doing an american accent on top of it all. jamie is british. his american accent, even just as one and not vecna, was incredible.
I knew Jamie was under the prosthetic but I had no idea he was the voice of Vecna!! That's awesome
Did they edit the voice
@@serenitybeats1677 nope im pretty sure they just made it echo, but the deepness is all jamie
You guys did an amazing job with both characters, immediately when I saw them I could tell how well they were done practically with minor digital. Loved them both.
These people deserve some awards cause they are awesome at what they do
Jamie is such a trooper! Truly remarkable what these actors go through to deliver such amazing content!
Incredible. Such talent! And I did not realise Victor was played by the actor who was Freddie Kruger!
Props to Jamie for enduring the experience and still managing his great performance :D
The fact Jamie didn't need a voice modifier is amazing
LOVE practical effects and seeing the behind the scenes of how Vecna and Victor Creel were made. Can't get enough Stranger Things content right now!
This actor better go places , wow🤯
This is incredible! The amount of detail and care that was put into these costumes it must’ve been tedious but a lot of fun to create especially the Vecna prosthetic.
Also you can’t tell at all that Robert has a prosthetic over his face, I mean I know he does but you can’t see the lines at all. It’s absolutely incredible
This is why I loved the show Face Off!! So much talent in creating a character like this! Those artists make so much come to life…it’s one of the main reasons I watch shows like these
Videos like this really make me realise just how many years of experience and knowledge of materials go into perfecting an art
i can’t believe jamie did vecnas voice
I’m going to be honest. When he appears on the screen for the first time, I was extremely scared. And it reminded me of when I was a kid and how I would be scared of certain things. And for each time the character came into view, I would think what I would do in that scenario. That’s how much it scared me. I couldn’t handle that in real life. I would start hyperventilating and crying- seriously. Congrats of scaring the crap out of me.
Vecna's glossy makeup look routine 💅❤❤
his vogue tutorial is dropping soon im literally so excited!! 🫶🫶
Not only was the outfit INSANE, to know that it took you guys 8+ hours each application time is mind blowing!
Then the cherry on top is thinking how Jamie not only sat there throughout, not a single complaint, and you got to witness him fully become Vecna in his mind also is amazing!! What a team, what a show and what a cast!!!!!
Jamie needs an emmy for this right now🤦🏻♂️
They really outdid themselves with Vecna, an outstanding mix of practical effects coupled with a bit of CGI, killer combination
