France has First and Second class Frigates instead of Destroyers and Frigates. Britain and the French/Italians didn't agree because the Brits wanted a different layout of certain systems inside the ship, which would have made commonality questionable. The decision to switch components without completely revising the hull brought problems in the Type45, like for Air conditioning system requiring to cut out the hull to be replaced. The Radar was not the original point of contention and both, the Type45 and the Horizon, are almost variants of the same class. I still think the Brits did a huge mistake not adopting the 76/62, as it has shown to be extremely cost effective on a dedicated AA destroyer. Both France and Italy gunned down several drones and cruise missiles at a fraction of the cost of a single Aster missile in the Red Sea. The ship is now close to an MLU where possibly VL70 launchers will be added in the now empty space for cruise strike capability. It is still not entirely clear if Italy intend to change the Aster15 for the more compact CAMM-ER as the British did. France could do the same with the MICA, but I have even less clue about that. Dropping the Aster15 would means having up to 3 short range missiles for every VL launchers, leaving the expensive Aster 30 1 NT for the long range and ballistic missile interceptions. Modern day saturation attacks can easily wear down the missile defences and the ship cannot stay long in place before having to go back and reload the launchers. The Horizon class was designed in the nineties, when the current state of tension and technology on the sea was not foreseen, and this makes the MLU upgrade extremely urgent. The Horizon common platform, designed as a pure AA fleet defence ship from the beginning, was superseded by the FREMM for both France and Italy, the FREMM has been designed as ASW, GP and AA with many commonalities, with a slight decrease in costs due to the number of ships built and a slightly reduced size, but, once upgraded to the EVO standard, the Horizon will resume its place as the best AA ship in both fleets.
Thales' claims the Smart-L AESA radar is able to detect stealth threats. I always wondered how they acheived this. I see only two ways. - Either burning through stealth with sheer emition power, or -Using the Over the Horizon technique : shooting up, bouncing on the ionosphere and hitting the target from above, then looking for the lack of an echo caused by wave absorbing materials, which is how the french land-bbased OVH officialy operate based on claims from the ONERA (french national Aerospace research lab)
Stealth doesn’t work like that stealth reduce radar emission bounces however this just mean that the radar will detect a very small dots that hard to lock bu the loser you get the easier it is to hit it, currently stealth like the F 22 is less and less potent due to the evolution in new radars and IRST, secondly fighter like the rafale emit jamming frequencies that make it appear a very large target on the search radar which makes an accurate lock almost impossible at long range, which is also considered stealth
Could we get more of the MEKO ships, like the MEKO 360 frigate and the MEKO 140 Corvette? Also, could we get videos on old Soviet warships, like the Kirov Battlecruiser. Especially given that the Admiral Nakhimov, is now being Reactivated.
Very nice ships. The european navies are going to play a much more important role in the future. But the problem I see with them, is that they always seem to be low in ammunition. European navies have great ships, very capable and modern, but often seem to be held back by munition limitations.
European navies typically build their ships with the Russian navy in mind which leads them to prioritize anti-submarine capabilities over anti-air capabilities due to Russian submarine fleet still being in relatively good condition unlike the Russian surface fleet which consists of ancient soviet warships, small littoral patrol ships, and a small number of modern frigates (The Gorshkov Class).
@JollyOldCanuck I see, thank you. And anti submarine capabilities are of course not very helpful against drones and airplanes. But dont they also have specialized air defense fregates?
@ Larger European navies do have air defence frigates, but they typically make up a smaller portion of their fleet compared to ASW frigates. Defence against cheap drones is handled by naval guns and CIWS.
I'm wondering why so many counties abandonned the NFR '90 programme. It seems to me that most of the envisioned participating countries ended up with ships of roughly the same size and capabilities. What advantage does the Horizon class truly have over (for instance) the de zeven provincien class of the Dutch navy, the UK's type 45's, Germany's Saachsen class or even the Spanish Alvaro de Bazan class (excl. it's SPY Radar suite and CIS)? It seems like a missed opportinity to me.
Type 45 still shares the hull with the Horizon, common programs even if a failure bring some standardisation, an technology sharing to the partecipants
The British type 45 is no more and no less an Horizon class with Rolls Royce engines. UK left the project with the solely intent to try to sell this project abroad alone. Sadly for them their version was blowing up engines on distant sailing. Still today they are fixing that issue. Meanwhile the Italian and French one are working flawlessly.
False. The GE intercooler is the issue not the RR systems. "The T45 destroyer intercooler upgrade" refers to a significant modification being made to the Royal Navy's Type 45 destroyers, specifically addressing a design flaw in the Northrop Grumman intercooler attached to the Rolls-Royce gas turbines, which significantly reduced power availability, particularly in warm climates like the Persian Gulf; this upgrade is part of a larger "Power Improvement Project" to rectify issues with the ship's propulsion system and improve reliability.
OK, no problem with Uk at all for me MBDA is a GREAT partnership with FR if Uk+Italy+FR could be closerie we culd FORGET germans nothing NEVER succeed with Germany ( look at "Eurofighter" just saved by spain before game-over. They built USELESS Taurus etc etc...sold energy to Putler and defense to NATO. UK+IT+SP+FR + ... but Germany can produce masterclass Ship, jets, missiles, radars, engines etc etc.
@vincefont4765 Load of garbage? Do a research on google. The Type 45 was stopped at harbors for years, cause they was blowing up. I know that truth don't like to British, but it's not my problem.
Tks for this video!! I had no idea the Horizon was build with so much protective redundancy in mind. Too bad about the cost thou. But interesting design to have 2 guns in front. I wondered how n why they decided on that?
5:10 OOOOOHHHHH, they can even take on... a heavy machine gun! Haha it's absurd when you hear that out loud. I know, no modern ship is armored. You couldn't really armor against modern missiles. But you could armor a small section, like machinery to a decent amount. Or have bulges to help mitigate torpedos etc. Ships are really built to not get hit nowadays. I guess damage control is a heck of a lot better, on paper, nowadays, than WW2.
Both French and Italian navies have FREMMs to take on the anti-submarine warfare role and they excel at it. The Horizons are meant to protect their carriers from air attacks.
@admiralmallard7500 if you are going to use a torpedo atleast use one that can actually do something. My guess is these are for helicopters. As helis don't carry heavyweight. So they just made a hole to launch torps and is most likely useless except morale boost. Max range of less than 10km is asking to get sunk. But even then it does make the ship less ready for combat. Helis need time to launch.

nothing wrong with the air conditioning on the type 45, it was the intercoolers that had problems in hotter climates.
sea ceptor is replacing aster 15
Not talking how the Type 45 Rolls Royce engines was blowing up during long distance sailing, wich UK is still fixing them.
@@solinvictus1234 They use electric motors for propulsion not engines
@solinvictus1234 it's not the RR engine that's the issue. It's the GE intercoolers that kept breaking down.
10:34 those dart projectiles need a video on their own 🎯
True! Just because they're not an american invention, they don't get the deserved recognition
all the Italian naval weapons and their ammunition deserve a separate video

The boats are designed to receive some impacts and be able to fight after (of course it depend on what kind of damage is done in first place).
Can we request ASEAN frigates saga

Why these ships don't carry heavyweight torpedoes? The 323mm has too low a range to be an anti sub weapon.
Both French and Italian navies have FREMMs to take on the anti-submarine warfare role and they excel at it.
The Horizons are meant to protect their carriers from air attacks.
Plus heavyweight torpedoes are massive and in reality if ship born torps ar being used something has gone wrong
