    I just have to say that you put more effort into your 2y/o than most owners of a young horse do. Good job, you're working hard on making Banksy into being good at handling and safe :D

    Omg, I haven't realised how many treat bags you're actually carrying 😂 you really are a professional treat feeder
    But in all honesty, I admire your training approach. I like seeing Banksy actively thinking and having a positive experience overall

    Really well explained video Shelby! I esp. liked you reminding us that they are prey animals so it's very important to take whatever scary thing you're using & walk AWAY from a horse, with it. So many trainers think desensatizing is an "in your face" kind of thing. I think that type of training sours a young horse from being curious & makes them more fearful... even if they obtain their objective. That type is more like the horse saying: "oh God, let's get this over with. I'm just going to shut down mentally & pretend I'm not really here" type of internal response. Good job, both of you. Banksy is sooo cute & has a fun personality.

    I’ve been hired to work with a horse who has “suddenly” become terrified of her blanket. I’m stuck and don’t know what to do because this ^^ is the way I’d normally the way I’d desensitize and it would take days, or weeks to put the blanket on to build confidence. But at the point this horse has been brought to me, she’s been wearing her blanket for months and her body is not acclimatized fo the cold and she has NO winter coat, it’s the dead of winter and is snowing almost every day so she needs it.
    I work on it with her every day like this building her confidence, but then I end up “forcing” it on her while holding her, which I hate because of how frozen and terrified her body language is and she’s even buckled her knees in fear a few times when I’m putting it on and I know I’m just tearing apart her trust that I’ve so carefully built.
    My “superiors” have told me that my ethics are too extreme and I’m not destroying her confidence or her trust, but I feel like I am and that I’m being contradictory towards this mare.
    (Note: she was badly abused in her last home; and her current owners have used flooding techniques to different objects. Ex tying plastic bags and jackets to her, which is why I believe the “sudden” fear of the blanket came into play)

      If you ever have free time with her in a calm environment you coukd try this. Undo the back of the blanket and slide it up the back. Then start brushing that part then do the same in the front and keep moving it around a little bit while brushing. That way she becomes used to the blanket moving and sliding on her back. With scared horse i would try to almost fold up the blanket in the size of a saddle pad and then unfold it on there back. Of you did the brushing and moving around the blanket she shouldnt be too scared of you calmly unfolding the blanket. I did this with multiple horses it takes the fear out in like one session, afysr that they are ofcourse still cautious but will trust you enough to allow you to put it in in a calm way :)
      I hope any of this helps. I think your mindset with her is great! Trust is important, keep it up ❤

    • @user8241

      I suggest leaving a blanket on her all the time and then when you want to work with her put another blanket on over top. Of course take it off at the end or make sure she isn’t too hot but that way if she really isn’t letting you put the blanket on she will already have one on. I hope this makes sense.
      Also fold it up as small as possible then slowly unfold it on her.

    • @april5666
      @april5666 3 роки тому +1

      @@user8241 this was going to be my suggestion too. Really good points LM to fold up the 2nd blanket small to start. I think if you go slowly with another blanket the horse’s owners will see the proof of this approach. Good luck.

      I'm wondering, due to this "sudden" experience that maybe she got a chest buckle caught on a fence or something in the stall? I don't think your ethics are "too strong " - just maybe at the wrong barn?? I know, hard to find Horse centric breedong/ training farms.

    Thank you so much for sharing the details of this liberty training session with Banksy. I love videos like this because I'm always wanting to learn as much as I can about how I can work with my horses more effectively. Some trainers I subscribe to don't teach in such a clear and understandable way as you do. I'm enjoying being on this journey with you and Banksy (and all your wonderful horses)!

    Oh yay!
    It always makes me happy to see people integrate things like clicker training and targeting with their horses. These methods are so awesome because they work with almost every animal and are based on positive reinforcement not punishment. I don’t know why we’ve decided in the horse community that the only way to train a horse is to punish them for bad behavior because it’s just not true.

    12:50 I never actually consciously thought about this but I've totally noticed this when working with my horse. He seems so much more comfortable with new objects if I let HIM come to me and smell the object a couple times before I actually approach him with it.

    • @Milestone-Equestrian
      @Milestone-Equestrian  3 роки тому

      Alfalfa pellets, it’s just a regular feed you should be able to get an any feed store and then I also get the High Pro feeds step 5 grain as it’s a grain with larger pieces so adds some variety and chew time but is a lower fat grain

    Great video! I was curious if there are reasons to desensitize horses to a tarp specifically? would they ever actually need to walk over a tarp, or is this just general desensitization to get them used to noisy/spooky things? I can see why walking by a tarp without spooking is important but I'm wondering what the use is of getting the tarp on the horse. Sorry if this is a naive question!

    • @Milestone-Equestrian
      @Milestone-Equestrian  3 роки тому +5

      Tarp is just part of sacking out. If they can wear a tarp rustling jackets, quarter sheets, etc won’t bother them and desensitizing them to it on the ground simulates different types of terrain or materials they may need to deal with in the future (ie: approaching open water jumps or Liverpool’s as a jumper) and just builds their confidence in being asked to approach the unknown
