This epic strategy game delves deeply into the areas of exploration, trade, warfare and diplomacy, and lets players take control of a nation and guide it through the ages to become a great global empire.
If you're a history buff, you'll appreciate a lot of things about this game.
Yes!!! I absolutely love this game even after such a long period of time
the strategy is pretty much 100% in running your nation. as far as military goes it's basically cut and dry as far as whoever invests the most in the military will win militarily, but there's definitely numerous ways to play the game. you can't just declare war on whoever you want: there are consequences, and they're quite significant. you can only declare war if you have a good reason without suffering consequences on top of the negative aspects war brings.
Europa Universalis diplomacy, commerce and way to rule Engine + MTW2 Battles == Best strategy Game, Game of the year probably.
Being a history buff is all the fun for me. Being able to subjugate France into vassalship as England was a pretty fun thing for me :D
There could have been many, MANY improvements to the game, but hey nothing is perfect right?
i'm still playing Europa Universalis I... I've got a lot of work, but im definietly gonna buy this sick ass awesome game!! :D
TW focuses more on fighting, EU focuses on general nation-building. The two games are from different genres, so stop saying that one is superior to the other
I just started to play Paradox games. This is gonna be amazing! O and I love the music!
Got the demo for this game and found it quite fun. Dunno why people are comparing it to total war games. This is VERY different (notice not inferior or superior, just different.) I think, judging by the limited demo, that this could be quite a good game.
if someone could combine the complexity of paradox interactive's games, and Sega's fun battle system, it would be the greatest game of all time
@kennykyle133 Yep, if you advance the starting date it changes the countries to reflect that, and the game date goes up to the Napoleonic Wars - or World War 1 with the whole world mod, which I recommend.
This is my favourite game, and im looking forward to the new roman inspired game they are making.
I play the game on a Vista laptop and it works great. Might be slow if your computer isn't very powerful, though.

i love this game. It's hard but it's interesting to play. I like to play with the politic geo.

I don't want to say that the game is complicated, because this game is well organized. However, using your words, the strategy is DEEP. Number of choices may be overwhelming. If you expect combat and action, this is not the game for you! Only visuals: A map, words, and numbers.
For me, the juicy part of this game is after I stabilize my state. Ambitions for more power.
Knowing history/international relations can double the fun :D

@TehLollero Considering how they had to script the AI in the Shogun 2 demo rather than use a regular one, I wouldnt get your hopes up for even a half decent AI when it is released.

@calicheSCOT depends on what version i play BYZ and once i take back crete or cyprus i always get those hit first, besides i push britain out of ireland (same game) and france comes in without a royal marriage or an alliance. Besides certain islands are never hit if they own a sea (falklands) navies all you need to scare them off

Im thinking of getting this game, how deep does the strategy go? And are there multiple ways to play it, ie the nations who invest all thier resources in war will *always* beat those who dont?

I've already solved the problem. By the way, if you have In nomine and Napoleon's Ambition then you can play since 1399 until 1820. Oh and you can make a new country ;)

There are loads of mods, that make the AI better infight and on the map.

If you're a fan of strategy games, yes, but there isn't so much action in it, and it has flaws, it can be really tiresome sometimes, 'cause it take's a long time to advance in technology! Technology is important for this games progress

Is it possible to play the battles in real mode? Because i'm completey sure that the graphics and the play mode can't possibly near M2TW!
I have a slight grip with the game. Is it not possible to load up a save file while in-game? Say a colonization fails, you're then pretty much screwed for a year or so before you can generate enough cash. (obviously depends on your country. I'm having a bash of the Aztecs)
I can't find a way to do it. Is there any way? a Quick-save/Quick-load feature?
If you play as Russia or Great-Britan/England,or some other state that is big but surrounded by small and weak nations, it may be too easy, but if you play as Prussia or Sweden, or other big ones, wich are surrounded by other big, or evevn bigger nations, then it will be fun and hard enough
it may be a bit like the new total war empires but i guess we'll see

hey I'm completly new to the game I just wanna ask, how do I get my army into my navy?
So I played it in sandbox mode, conquered the whole world in about 3 centuries. Nothing happened. I thought there would be an event or something.
Great game though.
Doesn't quite work. Especially with sieges. In Medieval total war 2 you can end a siege in minutes once you attack. In EU3 they go on for quite a while. The real time grand map and real time fights wouldn't work together.

Rome: Total War only gets really good when you use the Total Realism mod.
Likewise, EUIII is MUCH better with the Magna Mundi mod (don't play it until you are good at vanilla or you will get your ass handed to you)

Hi! I've tried to make a new country. I think I've done everything correctly but when I want to start the game it comes up with this error message when it gets to "Loading databases"

I've played Empire on VH/VH and never once lost, in fact once you own an Island its impossible to lose the game because the AI is so terrible it cannot even perform a simple naval invasion. That's not a strategy game.

hello, I have a question. What "role" do you play in this game? who are you in this game? I mean, if i'm correct, you do not play the King of the nation you choose and you do not play the role of a general. so who are YOU (the player) supposed to be in this game?? some shady, unnamed person behind the nation manipulating events, or what?
@calicheSCOT I think that you mean E: total war. Its AI sucks, but they will change it better in Shogun 2. AI even sucked in napoleon :/. but total wars are still best games ever.

If you learn to read you'll realise i didnt call Europa Shittalis a piece of crap because it wasnt in a top10 list. I was pointing out RTW is a *good* game because it is in many top10's. And if you are about to argue that the majority of people are completely wrong and that E.U is in fact better than total war, dont bother. You are arguing against the principles of democracy. To put it bluntly, you can't win.

Jiytt, how could you call any game not in the top ten list a "shitty excuse for a game"? Different people have different tastes, and a top-rated game may merely be a fairly good one in the eyes of a player, and vice versa.

Are you taking the piss? the AI in Empire couldn't rub two sticks together. Strategy doesn't exist in Empire.

Not at all. Don't expect any action, but this game challenges player with patience and responsibility regarding your choices as a political and war leader. Orthodox of strategy genre.
Total War has RTS battles, this doesn't. This is much more about the political aspect.

no it isn't. It is a more diplomatic and strategic game. ETW is really all about fighting battles.

Are the specs for this game steep? I know it's from 2007, but I fear for my laptop.
Not very demanding, 99% of laptops should handle it easily :)
I am not simply judging from this video, as i am not quite as foolish as to not research it beforehand. True, EU does offer a complex gameplay system and a STEEP learning curve. But this type of complexity is different from TW. Different, as in, inferior. You can embrace Tw as much as you like - from a casual player to a hardcore battle strategist. The "intelligence" of EU is all there in Tw, just in the form of battles. Eu is for guys called Normie; who eat, sleep and game in an anorak.
