    PSA: Just because a service dog has dyed hair does *NOT* mean they deserve to be harrassed. Everyone should have enough common sense to understand you're not suppose to pet them, and they're working.

      Shinnie I don’t think service dog rules are common knowledge. It’s not about common sense. The dog with purple hair is also such an attention grabber along with the other accessories. Common sense should dictate there will be lots of attention even if it’s mostly stare.

    • @Mei-em4qk

      Will M. A dog with purple hair is definitely an attention grabber, but once somebody learns its a worker service dog they should leave it alone. It is common knowledge to read its vest, too. Which usually says “Don’t pet me, I’m working.” Staring is fine, albeit interacting with the dog isn’t.

      I honestly think kids should be taught in grade school how to react when they see a service animal and the rules on service animals should be on every news channel at least once a week. Some disabled people let you interact with the animal and some don't but what pisses me off the most is when people get told no and loose their shit.

    I ended up near a young bloke and his service dog on a plane.... he was so happy when I sat down next to him...... I am 5'1" and my feet didn't reach the floor... and his service dog - great Dane lol. He kept saying thank you... don't know why.. I was the one who had the BEST FLIGHT EVA!!! Sadly it was only a 2hr flight. Beautiful well trained dog, polite young man. I make a point now when I fly to say - if there is a handler and service dog on the flight I am happy to be seated next to them.... loved it loved it loved lol

      @@trainedandmaintainedservic786 lol, thank you. But, for the first 20mins while he was trying to get his huge dog in a comfortable position... I said nothing as I knew that you never distract a service dog and their handler. But I had to speak up and I said to him "Look, I don't mean to distract you two, but seriously your dogs legs are longer then mine, it seems such a waste for him not to use my floor space"..... he looked at me, went to say something but looked at my feet several inches above the floor of the plane and started laughing. I volunteered for many years working with rescued abused and so called aggressive dogs, mainly Rotties and bulldog mixes (refuse to use 'pit' as there is no such breed).... I know when a dog is distracted even for a moment is can have terrible consequences.....
      But, 2bh, it was the hardest thing I ever did, keeping my mouth shut and my hands under my me or those first 20mins.

      Try having a hairless dog! lol
      For some of us, having the dog as the focus of people's attention makes a world of difference in how we feel going out. At least for me personally. I've never been diagnosed, but I'd be willing to bet money that even a clueless doc would be able to smell the anxiety coming off of me. Having my freak of nature there does wonders for my mental fortitude because people immediately zero in on the 70 lb hairless dog and I am super boring by comparison. I'm lucky to live in an extremely dog friendly area, so even if he's not a SD and I've never been diagnosed, he still gets to go most places with me. One day when I'm not too anxious to, I'll see a doctor about a real diagnosis and help (and possibly a PSD). Even though my Xolo is trained to perform some tasks, I don't think he'd make a good service dog, so a future dog would have to take on that role.
      Also, interesting to see so many people still don't believe psychiatric service dogs are a real thing and different from ESAs.

      Yes, people don't think. They just see pretty and start cooing and squealing. You can see in the video that 99.9% of people keep going about their day though. It's a very small percentage of people who just forget how to act, I guess. I admit I have done the same thing sometimes when I see certain babies. You just lose your mind sometimes--they make eye contact and grin. I have these big white hippo teeth and it makes babies laugh at me, and I can't help it, I engage. I grin back, and then we have this thing going, and I'm distracting someone's baby. Olaf (my service dog) is a total ass--he starts it. He will make eye contact with people. He starts it. They can't help but grin at him and coo. I don't realize what he did, and I ask them not to distract, but he did it first. Those poor people. It took me forever to realize what was going on. My dog is a di...oofus.

    I bought a toddler sized summer quilt (it has paw patrol on it and is super cute) and I put that down before my SD tucks into her place in front of me on the plane, train, or boat. Gives her some insulation from the cold or hot metal, and protects her from all the nasty germs and viruses on the surfaces. I use it in movie theatres and concerts and such too. Just an idea. Because the body suits don't protect the face and butt where germs are likely to enter, or if there's a cut or abrasions on the paw the blanket protects more, and you can roll it up like a mini sleeping bag and attach it to the bottom of your backpack

    • @trainedandmaintainedservic786
      @trainedandmaintainedservic786  5 років тому +16

      Emily Swan The bodysuits aren’t for germs, just grime. There’s some science behind your implication we’d need to get into but I’m going to move on with a chuckle. My dogs don’t work if they have cuts on their feet. A blanket on the floor, especially a summer one, doesn’t do much to block the cold. It helps to wrap the dog’s core. Many people carry a light blanket with them to help keep their service dog clean in place like movie theaters, and it’s a great idea. Personally I’d rather my dog wear it than I carry it!

    • @mavisme4645
      @mavisme4645 5 років тому +9

      Emily Swan - I use a cheap bathmat from Costco! They cost less than $10, have a rubbery side that keeps it from slipping, and a fluffy side that is warm and comfy. My dog generally gets chilly, not hot, and since she has no extra fur and is fairly heavy (95lbs) I like to use the bathmat to protect her elbows and hocks on hard surfaces.

    • @trainedandmaintainedservic786

We feel service dogs should be kept very clean and look clean to the public. I’m sure your bath mat is spotless. The one in my bathroom is ...zoonotic.

      Haa! :) Yes, her bathmat is pretty clean - I certainly don't use it in my bathroom! It is only used for movie theaters and plane rides, and it gets washed pretty often. I wasn't implying that your idea isn't a good one, just that my dog would prefer the mat any day. She's not a fan of wearing clothes (her vest is about the extent of her comfort zone for accessories!). In the winter, I put a snug, stretchy sweater on her if she has to be in a cold place for very long, and she really dislikes it! However, I dislike seeing her shiver and curl up into a pathetic little ball, so I force it upon her!

    Thank you for the video. I have wondered about flying with a Service Animal.
    I use a Dachshund as my Service Animal. Being hard of hearing, I just need a dog that can Alert.
    I was going to say, hay you make your guy stand out with purple fur.... And so on...
    But then I remembered the time I had my guy with me at Knotts Berry Farm.
    People just did not see him. Fortunately he picked up on walking in between my feet and only a little in front of me. So to step on him a person would have to step on me first. So, I can see the thought of him standing out.
    And if it's just a styling.. Becouse you like the way he looks... Well people decorate their casts all the time and so on.
    On a personal note I do not use a Service Dog vest or badging (before anyone yells at me, the law states no vest or markings needed. No I.D., or documentation either. Except airlines can ask for some info.).
    I don't mind when folks ask quistions (as long as they are polite and they really want to learn) or ask to take a picture. I use the interaction to educate folks.
    But my guy is used to Alert me to Sounds. It can be differant depending on the task the dog does as if folks interacting with the Animal is OK or not. So always be polite and ask.
    Again, thanks for the post.
    Could you have asked the flight attendant for a blanket? I know the in flight blanket are used a lot before being cleaned, but I'm sure your pup would have been fine with it. Oh, if your thinking... NO, a person has to use that blanket don't get dog dirt on it... Well just do some googleing and see what will make you sicker. Something a dog has sat or laid on, or something a baby or toddler has been on. I'll give you a big clue ... The baby or toddler is disgustingly filthy and will give you all kinds of nasty things. But the worst you'll get from the animal is dandruff and fur (the same stuff that can transfer off a pets owner's clothing) .
    To folks that don't get service animal laws... It's simple. Basicly anyplace a human can go, or a human can do, a Service Animal can to. Don't think of it as a dog. Think of it as a little human.
    The exception is for safety. Not really yours... So allergies don't count.
    Only if the dog would not be safe. Or if a person would not be allowed then you can also not allow a service animal.
    Also the Service Animal must be well behaved. Under control.
    If it growling at folks. Or running loose, or is way out away from the owner on a retractable leash (and it not that way as part of helping it's human) and the owner has no clue...
    Yep, that's not allowed. And anh Dog that is behaving badly. Generally a real Service Animal will mostly stay very close to its person....
    And let me tell you, us folks with real disabilities and real Service Animals hate the fakers more then you do! And that includes folks with real disabilities that Do Not Train their dogs into real Service Animals.

Some dogs are just not stable enough or poorly trained for that type of work. And should not be around other animals and people. Our group tends to base that on the individual dog, but the general age is about 10 years. Service life is hard work, and although these dogs are pampered, they slow down like everyone else, and it's harder for them to focus when they're tired. I'll give a general 10 as my answer. That's the norm for program dogs from what I understand. Tiny dogs tend to live longer and are usually carried, so they can often work longer than that.

      You probably already thought of this, but it's easier to train "tuck" if you use a blanket. He's not allowed to put a paw or tail outside the blanket. You make the mom noise and push his tail/paw gently back in and then clicker or make the happy noise and reward. Then you switch to a smaller blanket. We train "corner" and "tuck" so they can really cram themselves up into a wall, then slide down and tuck all the sticky-outie bits underneath. Practice under booths in restaurants. Awesome excuse to go to restaurants. :)

      Karen Grunberg - we are near you! I did a bunch of work with my last service dog in OH because the bus system (Island Transit) was free to get on and off anywhere and everywhere. I was the weirdo getting on at Walmart, then off at the station, then on again by Ault Field and off at the High School!! The drivers must have thought I was either completely lost or mentally incapacitated! I would leave the kids at Paint Your Heart Out to paint pottery and I would just jump on and off buses all day long!

      I really like Anacortes. We go there for dinner where & there.
      No, I did not know that about tuck. TY! I was going to ask our trainer (Courtney Keon w/Skylla Dog Training) how to teach him. She trains us, to train him. She does not train husbands though. Fewy! Lol

    Do they keep other dogs away from yours? I know that other ESAs or SDs can be on a flight. Is there a rule to not put two dogs directly next to each other? That seems like it could be dangerous. I’m terrified of an ESA getting out right next to us and being aggressive.

    • @trainedandmaintainedservic786
      @trainedandmaintainedservic786  5 років тому +5

      LuckyDal Pretty sure there is no such rule but I have always been seated away from other dogs on the same flight. Airline staff are fully aware of training deficiencies in individual working dogs; the last thing they want is a dog fight at 10,000 feet. Omg the puns!

      Trained and Maintained Service Dogs Whew okay. I hear those horror stories of aggressive dogs on planes and I just get anxiety...as I do with everything. But I’ve seen some attacks and I can hardly hold myself up I’m so scared, much less defend Lucky. At at such a high altitude who knows if I’ll be conscious in the first place haha

    Service dogs are NOT supposed to be reactive to other dogs whatsoever because their focus should be 100 percent on their handler for any warnings or alerts when they are working.

    • @trainedandmaintainedservic786
      @trainedandmaintainedservic786  5 років тому +1

      Yeeees. The other dog was a pet. Mine isn’t “reactive,” which is generally understood to mean “aggressive.” They get to be aware of other dogs though. I sure let my dogs notice them, in case they get rushed by another dog Our group’s protocol is that I will tackle the other dog and take it down, and my dog is trained to get behind me and stay out of the way-if there our team members present they are to get any children to safety, and if possible the dogs also. We have had many lunges and even attacks-everyone has. Usually friendly dogs trying to play, but not always. We encourage our dogs to see such behavior as friendly even though they aren’t stupid and can read it correctly. The last thing you want your service dog to do is start getting anxious about other dogs, so you act like everything is a game. Olaf was aware the other dog was crabby but he was being genial about it. He doesn’t feel threatened by other dogs, even though he’s had a few close calls. As for focus, it seems many people aren’t aware that vision is a dog’s 3rd sense. A dog can be watching something else and still be totally aware of its handler through scent and hearing. I’ve had dogs alert me from the other end of the house, while playing with another dog or person. They are truly amazing, aren’t they?

    I am SO thankful that you posted this! I am the future handler of a service dog named Damian who has been training hard in Oklahoma. I train and bring him home in late February and I have to fly back with him. I'm worried that I won't be able to say "NO you can't pet my dog". Any tips?

      Twitch Happens Sorry-i will never be appropriate. Ok, your gear needs to have big, visible patches. We have found that in spite of public criticism, people are less likely to pet service dogs in bright gear (but just as likely to interfere in other ways, like talk to them). Leash wraps are a good idea, hanging patches...
