VW need to lower their prices. I have leased three electric cars now all with crappy software. They keep saying "premium", I call it bull...
Maybe change brand next time?
Try a Tesla?
VW is a shity product 🤮🤮🤮
Get a Tesla broski.
I drive the ID3 first model and the newer one through carsharing regularly. First one really has a lot of issues, second generation feels better. About software and usability I have to say, that I have no time to test it thoroughly. I like the way the second generation drives and would buy it new for half a price ;)
For many years nearly all German cars come in the bottom half of the reliability table of manufacturers in the UK. They've been trading on their historical reputation for quality but not delivering. Overpriced and underbuilt.
BMW is definitely living on their laurels. Their cars may be fast but they are crappy in terms of reliability.
VW always has been a relatively high cost operation, with older generations of VW products still being produced in other parts of the world. At the time of my first visit to China, I was amused to see that my taxi was a Jetta that had been out of production 15 years in Europe. This business model might not be natural for EVs.
During my visit to China , HK AND Thailand... I noticed how clean the air was in HK AND china nothing like the propaganda media......I also noticed all Jetta were converted to natural gas.... there's a big tank in the trunk ....
China really cleaned up the air after getting a big shock in the early 2010's. The windup of the property bubble is also reducing demand for steel, means less coal burning. Don't get me wrong, they still need deep CO2 cuts, but the air quality is improved.

What a terrible year it is…
Thank you so much for the advice. Your coach was simple to discover online. I did my research on him before I scheduled our phone call. he appears knowledgeable based on his online resume.
I found his extraordinary resume when I searched for his name on Google. I count it a gift that I went over this remark
There are good days and bad days. It's a zero-sum game, but keep this advice in mind: spend wisely, invest wisely, and diversify your holdings so that when one performs poorly, the others do well.
This can be accomplished by hiring a knowledgeable specialist like Samuel Peter Descovich whose platform provides a wide range of investment options. By doing so, you leave little room for regrets and may even gain more.
-I just looked up his name on Google and saw his impressive resume. I consider myself lucky to have found this comment area..

VW's current predicament is reminiscent of British Leyland in the 70's. Multiple brands, infighting, powerful unions, no clear strategy and poor & over-priced products that consumers didn't want. Unless there is radical change, & fast, VW as we know it will no longer exist in 5 years. Cheers Sam for the great analysis.
I saw that BMW Cowley is to produce the new electric mini. However, it is really a Chinese mini. The new BMW I X series are also Chinese built and run on Chinese batteries. I hope their branding works for them.
@@ouethojlkjn Did you mean that you hope the brand isn't brought down by poor implementation? Or that you hope they can leverage the Chinese technology to bolster their brand?
@@TankEnMate I mean I hope the BMW brand for quality etc. is not dragged down with the inference their cars are being made in China. Why pay top dollar for a car that is really made in China? For example, the Polestar 2 is a Geely Chinese built car. It is nothing at all to do with Volvo. Yes, they will say "but it was designed in Sweden" - does not stop it being a pricey version of the same thing you can buy in China for half the price. Same with the Jaguar ipace outsourced to another company but with the Jaguar "design ethos" to lend it gravitas.
Germany needs a Margaret Thatcher instead of the "Grünen" party that currently destroys the German industry and economy on their way to the green heaven.
This is 100% spot on.
VW has its focus split into too many parts. Porsche, VW, Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Skoda, Seat, etc.
Same car is sold under 5 brands, like GM used to do with Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, etc.
It almost always ends up in bankruptcy.

lol, byd selling theirs cars at 2x prices of their chinese pricing is already too much for europeans to compete. they want byd to raise prices to 3x.

I wonder why the only electric cars that are actually selling in Brazil are from BYD and GWM......

@@sparkysho-ze7nm???
I think it could be politics, but You live in Brazil and should know better. Maybe it’s also due to missing infrastructure, while the Chinese don’t care, but just selling?
The problem is pricing. The ID3 is about 10K too expensive. It’s a nice car, it’s just that nobody wants to pay 43K-47K for a hatchback. You can get a used Golf with low mileage for under 20K. It‘s not going to work. Here in Austria, the ID3 with the bigger 77KW battery is the same price as a base Model Y. What would you rather have?
Batteries in the vw Evs aren't great either
Exactly. I ordered a new company car recently. An ID3 didn’t fit that monthly leasebudget, while Tesla 3/Y, BMW iX3, Volvo XC40 and Polestar 2 did. That says a lot, if not everything.
Agree. I like driving the second gen ID3 as acarsharing car. It’s just my favorite size, but too expensive. Drives nice, handling of functions is not so nice, but has been criticized extensively somewhere else.
VW waited to long to get serious about EV's. Herbert Diess told the truth. VW didn't want to hear it so they fired him. Now VW paying the price for their ignorance.
No: EVs are a scam, they are a fire hazard and at 7 time as expensive as ICE cars to insure. They are just a novelty,
@@ValMartinIreland Nonsense. Dirty ICE cars have more vehicle fires and the price of EV's has come down to the point where they are as cheap as dirty ICE cars. They don't cost that much more to ensure and EV's are cheaper to maintain.
EV sales have fallen off a cliff and are just not worth it
@@oskary2833 Dirty ICE vehicles are quickly becoming extinct in Europe and China.
It didn’t wait to long. It’s just China changing the rules to fast and since it’s one of the biggest market it pushes and protects its own industry with resources nobody has.
Hard hitting reporting Sam, one of your best!
Thanks Mate!
What VW should do is just facelift e-Up, add some basic features ramp up the production and keep the price around 20k euro. I would buy such car and many would. People are buying Dacia Spring and it's quite rubish. But it's cheap to buy and run.
Of all the cars here (Houston) VW's are most BLAND -- muted colors like a lot of grey, white, and lite blue shades. Other companies like KIA have jazzy colors and sporty styles...
The trouble is German car manufacturers have been resting on their laurels for far too long, their cars are no longer the most reliable for quite a long while now but yet charging a premium for their cars. It's no surprise therefore that all of Germany’s car makers were asleep at the wheel when it comes to EVs.😂
I agree to your first point, but the German cars are much more reliable compared to the Chinese, which are basically a copy of western alternatives.
The rich in China are still driving Mercedes, Audi and Porsche.
Before i seen this video i thought VW was doing well with its EV's. I read that German electric cars have a much better 'fit & finish' to their Chinese rivals. The Volkswagen ID4 is Ireland's best selling EV this year beating MG whose cars are cheaper. I have to say i'm surprised by what i've just seen here. Great video. Thanks.
Their cars are too expensive and use poor materials. Most buyers even in Germany cant afford 40+ thousands € for a new car. Besides with a Tesla you get a better car.
Thanks for all your hard work Sam
Always!
That’s what happens when you don’t take new technologies seriously. Blockbuster, Nokia, etc….
History tends To repeat itself.
The public still does not want electric cars but are forced due to European Laws and the Sanctions against Russia that have made priced of gas skyrocket.
Drive a new Tesla and you'll never go back. The future has arrived.
NOT a good analogy. Tesla has disrupted the industry, but not by that much. Plus, their electric-only approach might turn against them at some point. Especially when hydrogen starts picking up.
This is a reflection of todays german work culture, i am german so i can say it, i live in another country and can see clearly that we lost something, we are more woried with burocracy than making a really good product
I’m driving a Seat Mii electric for 3 years now and I love it! My very first new car; all before where second hand. I made a promise to myself when I got my drivers licence at 18, that my first car would be electric. It took 27 years to find one I could afford. And they’re discontinued … absolute idiots, there at VW. So stop complaining, you only got yourself to blame.
Here in Thailand, one of the main industries is manufacturing Japanese ICEs for all the major Japanese brands. Sam, after having lived in TH for a while, do you think that the Chinese manufacturers will build similar production facilities for RHD vehicles? I heard that BYD, Great Wall and SAIC already have factories under construction in Rayong province, as well as CATL.
In Malaysia, Geely committing to spend USD10B for expansion of their Tanjung Malim Plant for EV and Chery is investing Big in Malaysia with their new EV plant
BYD also going to set up their manufacturing plant in Malaysia, including batteries & EV.
As Tesla has set up shop in Malaysia, only natural that BYD will set up factory to produce batteries for Tesla too.
CATL is only interested in setting up plant in the US and perhaps may regret their decision as can be seen how badly TSMC fared in Arizona. ( disastrously)
I worked in a product selling company. Over a few years that company allowed their sales to be focused on a smaller number of purchasers each year. In the end they went bust because their few customers could dictate the price they'd pay. The company lost the control of the market paid the price.
I liked the marathon example although the prerequisite is that there is no predator behind the runners 😊
This conversation is going to be repeated in Japan if it's not already. Japan has no EV game at all and every year that goes by makes them look more and more obvious.
Putting in Toyota shorts now 😂
@@spiritedgarage Little too soon for that but the timing will be critical if you choose to. You will have to "guess" when the first really bad news is about to hit for Toyota.
@frankcoffey for sure. And that's the hard part, but theres just no way the stock should be valued at $190 right now with declining sales in China and low margins in the US; essentially the world's #1 and 2 car markets respectively.
I'm gonna do a long put and just keep rolling it over. I'll probably be eating premiums for awhile till it hits 😅

Yeah, but how... ID2 and golf will not appear in near future. I love that Audi got bashed hard for their arrogance against Tesla, remember that one
THE id 2 WILL SAFE vw if they deliver !
ID.2 is clear proof that they are stuck in the 1990s, it is probably the most boring vehicle in the world
Thanks for the analysis.
Vdub had a couple of advantages in terms of brand recognition that they could have leveraged to get themselves into the EV game. One is the minibus. A seven seater electric version carrying the VW logo would sell like hot cakes.
Their other option is to like MG, Volvo and the rest, sell their brand to China and let them get on with it.
I wonder how do people distinguish the spoken c "see" from the spoken z "see"?
Euro norms on pollution had the same scope...Geely tried to sell 3000 DM cars in Europe in 90s...
Great content. One small point: decimate means reduce by one tenth. It is an error to use decimate as a synonym for devastate.
Historically, this is true... but..

kill, destroy, or remove a large proportion of.
"the inhabitants of the country had been decimated"
Damn that makes sense! I've been using it to mean devastate for years. I've been educated today.
No it isn't, that is the historical meaning of the term, to kill one out of ten, a custom during Roman times. But its primary current meaning is to devastate, or kill a large part of.
The fact that recent use has been based upon an ignorant misunderstanding does not excuse that misunderstanding, nor does it justify the continuation of ignorance.

The Chinese government practically forces foreign companies to partner with their national companies and to build there if they want to do business there. That's how they have become so competitive. Why then Germany or the EU doesn't follow suit? That way they may compete in a leveled ground.

Hi Sam, I always wondered if you use the old map of Europe (before WWII, Germany with the Polish territories) on purpose? 3.38-3.45 in the video. Probably not. I’ve seen this several times in your videos.
It is clear that the legacy car makers have not yet looked at improving the manufacturing process in the same way that Tesla has done and have room to reduce costs dramatically in the future, but will require less man hours and hence less workers required per car, if the unions let them.

12:40 Germans buying a stake in the low ranking Chinese car company to get access to tech. That sounds really bad and harsh.
And to think they could have just kept making the mk3's and mk4's for fifty years like they did with the beetle, and they'd be perfectly fine. Those cars were like little tanks, and people still love them to this day.
The stock prices of Toyota and Honda are doing fine. VW's stock price crashed. It looks like what's killing VW is not lack of EV. It's lagging behind in hybrid.
Province of Ontario Canada is giving vw group and stellantis 28 billion to build a battery plant there I hear. What a fkin sham..let's find us the biggest failures in ev business and give the free money to build something they dont understand for a business they can't compete in. Govt will likely bail out gm..again as well. Wish I could suck at something and be rewarded.
Yeah, our idiot Canadian government who are cutting off their nose to spite their face by pissing off China. Ontario has a very large auto sector for its size, Ford, GM, Stellantis, Toyota and Honda - all of which are in severe trouble with respect to EVs. We should be courting the Chinese manufacturers as plants here don't get US tariffs and qualify for the IRA. Instead we get continuous anti-China bullshit propaganda and our politicians insulting them. Tesla is now serving the Canadian market from Shanghai! So instead we will piss away 28 billion on the losers in the EV market. Geely-Volvo have their EV production in the US, and the other Chinese manufacturers will probably go to Mexico as Tesla has with its new plant.

Negotiation is very important. If they want to sell cars in Europe, they need to build cars in Europe.
I’ve been down the road to nowhere myself…. It’s fun as hell.
Trust me Sam I’m no automotive expert just a keen auto follower and I could see this coming with Chinese Ev’s taking European sales if they got a foot hold. And if Europe do what has been suggested that being putting taxes on Chinese cars would be a mistake because China is we’re most of the batteries come from and as such they could hold European manufacturers ransom. But it’s not just China South Korea has had a major impact in vw Audi sales. Here in the uk the most popular car traded in to buy the Kia Ev 6 is Audi. And Tesla here has got to of hit BMW sales massively. The trouble is the German brands have lived of the laurels for some time but the other manufacturers have court them up and in some cases overtaken them.
China is the biggest market for German cars, no chance that Germany will put tariffs on as the retaliation will be swift and decisive
We are at the point where "the car" is no longer relevant. People have started to understand that the computerisation of what is essentially a "robot with wheels" is defining the future of transport. Features that were once important are now being ignored as the robotic features of vehicles (particularly EV's) are driving down costs (and consequentially prices). When a person sees his/her neighbour driving around (or being driven by) a vehicle that is demonstrably better and cheaper, they shift too.
My sister in law least a VW ID3 earlier this year and as she is not interested in cars she did not care whether it was a good EV or a bad EV. She did go onto say. “ why didn’t I do this before?”
They never should have fired Diess. That man knew of the challenges ahead unfortunately the luddite board got rid of him. Your loss VW. Suffer.
Great video... well done. Thanks for your work
All these legacy western automakers got themselves into a pickle by focusing exclusively on premium-priced EV's for the top 10% instead of basic, affordable models for the masses.
Most people cannot afford a $40,000+ vehicle. At that price, you're talking entry level BMW/Mercedes ICE models.
MG have swooped in the UK and stolen buyers from such a segment before it even existed. China is using MG and Volvo (Polestar) to sell their Chinese EVs the UK and Europe.
Change is upon the ICE industry and it seems like most legacy automakers are only now beginning to suspect that. Given their legendary nimbleness, I expect legacy automakers to field many BEV's competitive with 2023 Tesla machines by 2030. But that's not gonna happen, 'cause they will all be in receivership by then. RIP.
Creating factories in China had also created a monster learning how to build a better product
definitely, they are a victim of their policies they thought they were in control of, but lacked the foresight needed to avoid what they might of known would happen.
Once again, a sane analysis.
at least Germany is trying and have some success. Japan's head still mostly in the sand.
I'm not sure how big the prize is for coming in fourth instead of sixth, though. Win, Place, Show...and Also Ran? America, China, Korea...and everyone else?
Germany might do better by embracing Tesla's Brandenburg factory, and Tesla, rather than constantly backpedaling and hoping wistfully for home brew success, or victory through rebadging. Part of the continued vibrancy of America's auto industry, after the rise of the Japanese makers, and later the Korean makers, was from (finally) embracing transplants, and America's carmakers switching to (personal) trucking, an option that may not be highly present now for German makers. An all in on local factories for successful foreign makers (assembly, parts, batteries), might save German vibrancy. Wishful thinking about the ID some-number selling well outside Germany, or flogging the second tier of Chinese brands as German, might sink it. Dieselgate, then a charging network with a poor reputation for reliability. Third dramatic failure could be the last. I'd like to see Germany succeed, but half hearted late efforts won't likely do it. There may just be room for Win, Place and Show, not Also Ran, nor Also Walked.
Japan is reopening it nuclear plants. 10 open, 17 on the way soon.
Here in the US, EV sales have dropped dramatically, and many owners have been trading in full EVs for hybrids and plug in hybrids. We don’t have the infrastructure yet and many early adopters feel burned.
Faking the emissions cost them 25 billions dollars. Not 100.
They should bring back diesels. They were awesome!
People use to laugh at electric cars and Elon Musk, but now Elon Musk has proven that they are fools and electric cars are the future. Amazing how things have changed.
Not surprised. The VW ID.4 is absolute crap. Seriously laughed my ass off during a test drive. Its a 40k econobox with two damn window buttons that have to be switched between front rear windows, a half assed one pedal driving mode that isnt, climate control and volume control that are NOT back lit (WTF, good luck finding those in the dark), cruise control that can only be deactivated by hitting the brake, touch sensitive steering wheel controls that are activated by the slightest touch, sit to start that will turn the car off the instant you exit the car requiring the crappy sluggish infotainment system to be reactivated when you sit back down, seriously squishy brake pedal, insanely loud at highway speeds, suspension is far too harsh and going over bumps the car sounds like its going to break. I was astonished that this car passed as production ready.
👏🏽 very well articulated
I appreciate that!
The 'problem' for Toyota is how well their ICE sales are going. With a ban not coming until 2035, I doubt we will see much more in the EV sector from them for at least another 5 years, there is just no sensible business plan there for them right now.
That said, in the UK, at least the bZ4X and be insured very affordably (cheaper than some ICE) which is more than can be said for the model Y which for many, including myself, is simply no longer a viable option due to supercar like insurance costs.
if german automakers try to sttle for just the german market they will lose 75% of their business. if they start building walls tp other countries auto thats all the market they will have left.
It will probably be EU market, but there is stellantis and Renault as well there..
I always considered VW vehicles to be pretty, in a sort of utilitarian way. VW Golf's designers have managed to keep their fingers on the design pulse of mid sized and hatches for a good 20 years, and made the Golf and GTI look competent, restrained and good looking. Polo and Passat kept their straight lines when Tesla and Mercedes went with softer curves, and it made them look good for what they were - competent no fuss German quality.
I think the Germans just need to find a good design line, and stick to it. So many people shop for looks, even if we don't admit it. If they make a good looking car, then they can buy a Chinese drive train to survive while they build their own, and then just wait for the EU to block the Chinese and Americans so Volkwagen can get back to owning Europe.
The GTI ev looks fantastic. Now they just have to produce them in North America & capture the small car ev market. Because the new Mini sure isn’t going to.
To me, the Italin-designed VWs were the best.
VW and all car companies gonna have to cut their prices . Normal people can't REALLY afford 40k cars . They will try to tell you that is the what price is affordable. They will even tell you about market research all this other BS. All that means nothing. The reality is Normal people are looking for 18 - 24k base model cars that are affordable for people NOT LIVING ABOVE THEIR MEANS. Great vid.
The problem with sanctions or tariffs is, they can't stop Chinese car makers selling in China. When half of VW's profits come from China, and they need a tariff to compete, wave goodbye to that half of their profit.
start short VW now,
There is nobody more blind than those who don't want to see reality....
In USA we had the same issue with Chinese tires about 10 years ago. They were half the price and did a good job keeping people on the road and then USA had to cut them our completely.
Cheers Sam
2030.. nobody left in USA JAPAN OR GERMANY
I can see BYD taking market share from the likes of VW, Mercedes etc but not Tesla, they will need to install thousands of chargers across Europe and the UK in 2024 in order to compete against Elon Musk as the Tesla winning formula includes low cost charging when on trips in the package influencing what car to buy.
I imagine once all EVs have a range around 500 miles then this will change as home charging becomes the norm for the bulk of EV users.
We like most of our friends bought Tesla due to the range and cheaper on-route charging infrastructure,
I would have liked to have bought a long range UK built car but there just aren’t any plus depending on several different (expensive) charge suppliers on road trips is a real bind especially when chargers don’t work or won’t work, this isn’t some random thoughts, we have been driving electric since 2014, its experience
People won’t have money for a regular car. Let alone Tesla and their EV garbage.
Because both Tesla & BYD are so heavily subsidised by the US & Chinese governments.
VW and Nokia cases will be taught in schools 😎
All the answers are already on Teslas website and they just couldn’t get their head out of their arse. Never going to ever buy a VW
I have been saying for many Months that the EU better get together and create their own form of *"UAW"* or their Auto Manufacturing business is over.
How is a UAW styled union supposed to help VW?
Where is Herbert?
Well its evident they are having problems. They just jacked up prices recently with nil extras and underpowered offerings. Plus these cars are riddled with problems.
My trust is definitely with China now! My Chinese iPhone has never let me down 😊
Tesla's Betlin Giga factory and 10 year tech lead was the end of VW, BMW and MB, it's just the hand wringing to come before the inevitable bankruptcy.
Tesla's are trash though. They're plastic and uncomfortable. So no, you're completely wrong there.
VW don't want to sell cars... Here in Sweden they have jumped out of the budget and mid-market. They raised their price for the Golf from 27k to 33k for no reason at all, but to reduce the sales... At the same time, peoples wallets are shrinking... This month, so far, VW has sold 47 ID.3 and 509 ID.4, meanwhile MG4 is at 185 sold, BYD Atto 3 at 187 sold, ORA Cat at 39 sold, and the leading Tesla Y has so far sold 1181 cars... I think its time for VW to act, in some way...
When did you last see a vw?
Just one observation from a car enthousiast: European EV cars are BORING!! Hence, this is simply karma…..
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said in the 2023 State of the Union Address this week that European solar manufacturers face stiff competition from heavily subsidized Chinese rivals and noted that the bloc is launching an anti-subsidy investigation into electric vehicles from the country.
PV magazine
SEPTEMBER 13, 2023 EMILIANO BELLINI
Billions of subsidy to fossil fuels over decades but reluctance to do same for PV and electric cars, as in a China could it be protection of the old industrial model.
Answer is simple, VW Should start their economic EV production in India and South America and should provide cheap and reliable EVs to world before Chinese Manufacturers capture the global market😊
We still have faith in Big Beatle🤗
Their arrogance lead them to fire their CEO, the only guy who understood what they needed to do. The new CEO has absolutely no idea. He was hired because he was a yes man to the board. They’re getting what they deserve.
The legacy automakers are now paying the high price for not spending money to develop their EVs. I would buy a ten-year-old Model S before I even thought about a new ID-4/Mach-E/BZ-4 etc.
mach E is an insulting joke, the ID4 is giant bloated blob that has the most uninspiring model name and look ever. BZ4 at least looks vaguely interesting but again drab name. Tesla are stupid fast and it makes them tempting.
😮PREPARE FOR VW BANKRUPT😢
I’m ready 🙏🙏🙏
@@drrai1974 really? I was like saying after the video its hopeless..
They put 1.0 3 cylinder engines in all models...and all brands.i bought Renault 1.5 DCI. Four clinder 90 HP stable engine.
How has this happened?
