Never heard of this dish. I discovered it by accident because I had two bags of buckwheat in my pantry. I know it's healthy so I bought with the intent to make homemade cereal with it. I read the package and the suggested recipe: Kasha Varnishke. I had to look it up and found your video clip.
Thank you so much! I have used your recipe several times already and both my family and I love it. My Eastern European Jewish Grandma used to make this dish, she passed away in 2000 when I was 10 and my Mom doesn't cook, nor did she ever get the recipe. Now at 31 years old, finding your recipe literally tastes just like I remember my Grandma's- as sentimental as its delicious, doesn't get cooler than that!
Great video!! My grandmother would make this about once a month and she would bake it for a little while after it was all done, so the noodles were a bit crunchy. Hard to find good kasha varnishkes anywhere, except Yonah Schimmel Knish Bakery in NYC. They make it on the weekends.
Meine yiddishe mama used to make this, but only when she made a pot roast. She made it like you, with the egg, but she would drop dead if she saw your video with butter.
Very well shown and told.. thank you-- making some right now and I cannot wait.. This is so tasty.. the buckwheat onion aroma--- is so mouth watering delicious.
Check in the deli section of a Publix to see if they have knish. I find them there; they have spinach and they also carry potato. If you have a Lowe's grocery store where you live, they may carry knish there, too. They do here in Horry County, SC. Great video, btw. I really enjoyed watching & listening to you.
want to make a knish -- never did but always heard how good they were.. thank you for showing what they look like-- I did try a Kugel-- and for the first time--- not that bad..lol--- You have great taste is foods.. thank you.. again.
Hi........I never heard of it but it looks interesting 🤔 comfort foods are great.....for me my guilty pleasure is Mac and Cheese 😳 Hope your mom is feeling better.....See you soon, Hugs, Dolores 👏😍
Have I ever used fresh what? Do you mean raw, unroasted buckwheat? No, I've used this boxed brand forever! I hope you do try the recipe! If you do, please come back and comment!
CoolGray He says fresh mushrooms. I have eaten this many times at home, but with chicken fat not butter, and the onions are crispy cooked not with the buckwheat and are instead mixed in at the end.
❤❤❤❤❤Love kasha
Thank you.
Great version yum!
This is a great recipe, Thanks very much!

This makes my heart smile!
your grandmother certainly didn't make it with butter and chicken broth together. the real version is schmaltz, not butter
@@pkovenyou certainly didn’t know my Grandma or her cooking but thanks for your unasked for know it all comment, not.

Omg give me a knish! No where to be found upstate NY! 😥I love kasha varniska, my grandmother always made it!

A runny egg, poached, sunnyside, or over easy over 1/2 cup cooked kasha is so so good!

yum - I added peas
Yum!!!
Thanks for the recipe , how do you heat it up from the fridge?
If you use as much butter as I did, it reheats in the microwave beautifully! I also like it cold!
I just found this. Great recipe. You can get knishes at 2 Jay's deli. They have several locations
Well, I know what "книш" is, but i have never lived in NY or LA. Good vibes from Ukraine.😺

The Baking Diva I’m sure I’ll do a mac & cheese video one day! Mom’s doing great! Hope your recovery is also going well! ❤️
Don’t forget the gribines and shmaltz
I also think this would be good with potatoes if you wanted to change it up from noodles
Interesting, have you ever used fresh 🍄? I would like to try this recipe,😊

Made kasha yesterday same brand froze most of it.
It's not Kosher, so its not the traditional Jewish way of cooking it as in Eastern Europe
@@millyheyd3076 That's okay with me. 😆
The icon is a mushroom lol
Oh, HAHAHA! I couldn't see it! I haven't made this with fresh shrooms...just not in the habit. I'm sure it would be great!
