Congratulations, you are about the 13th owner of this truck. That yellow plate with BR-HZ-47 is the Dutch license plate (NL = Netherlands). I can send you the Dutch history of the truck, it is a 2.5 MB pdf file. Those RDW papers you found were the last government inspection report. From 2009 tot 2015 this truck was used to transport fair attractions. If you want a real cool Scania, try to find a Scania Longliner. It has a kind of apartment on board.
Yep , it's Dutch I noticed it directly ;-) Nice to see this truck in the USA ;-)

As a former Swedish trucker I can only congratulate you to a great truck!
The Scania V8's sound awesome, especially when they're climbing a hill at full throttle.
the 144 means that the truck has a 14 litre engine and the third 4 means that its a 4 series. the 530 means how much horsepower it had , and the remote is to lift and lower the back air suspension, oh and the truck is already piped
It could still be made louder😄

A tip about tipping the cab: Always remove all objects in the back of cab. Be sure the doors on the cabinets on back wall is secured. The cab tilts almost 85 degrees! Almost vertical!. Everything inside the cab WILL fall down onto the front window... (don't ask how I know...) AND the first time tipping the cab : it's always scary when the weight of cab tilts over the tippingpoint. This happens at around 70 degrees. So the last 15 degrees the cab is "freefalling". There is nothing you can do to stop it when it first goes over. A lot of weight on theese top-line cabs.
Americans don't seem to know how to tilt a cab proper, they aren't familiar with European cab-overs.
I drove a coworkers scania to the shop once for service and this absolute genius had a car jack in the top bunk. Let me just say it needed a new windshielda after.

It used to be a truck from a famous Belgium trucking company called Ronny Ceusters, it was a famous show truck that time. They only used the fifth wheel.
After that it was sold to a fairground company in the Netherlands called Vermolen. They put the frame on the chassis to put a sleeping box on it and tow their attraction at once.

Congrats on becoming the new owner of this legendary beast, and let's hope you give it the TLC and respect it needs and deserves. The very first truck i drove a few days after passing my HGV thirty years ago was a Scania 143M 450 V8, i had a few fights with the gears finding my way around the range change and splitter but we didn't take long to become very good friends, and let me tell ya, she used to pull like a freight train and the growl coming out of those twin chrome stacks was awesome. Hope you keep us updated on everything and enjoy✌

Hi Bruce and congrats on a real truck. You need to use the clutch each time you shift gears. The tranny is fully synckromeshed and have low and high series. Burnouts is a no no.. the V8 has so much torque it will kill tranny and rear end. I'm sorry to see the truck in such bad condition. I drove Scania V8's in Europe for some 30 years. Really amazing to see this semi truck over in The States now, I remember this unit from the yearly fairground nearby in the 2010s.
Vermolen is a Dutch family active in the travelling fairground business for more than a century and they own quite a lot of rides ranging from the nostalgic carrousel to modern adrenalin rides.
They travelled to fairgrounds all over the Netherlands but also Belgium, Germany and even further away.
The truck is rough looking now, but I don't think it deteriorated that much when it was in the Vermolen family, the owners of fairground rides do care very well for their trucks, they were their shop window.
Give it some care and TLC, getting the parts may be hard in North America.

Wow. Very curious how a Dutch Scania 144 truck ends up in the States! The photo shows it was a carnival hauler, probably moving the attraction through Holland, Belgium and Germany.
About your question: there's no doubt in my mind that this truck was build by Scania Factory in Zwolle, the Netherlands. If you send them an email with the VIN you might get quite some information. Oh, and by the sound of it: this will be an "open" exhaust. Sounds great, as Scania V8 always sounds great.
The scania V8 sound is on par with the V12 rolls Royce merlin engine it's a legend. Those scanias were the truck every kid wanted to drive. As for the governor there will be a fuse you can pull to derestrict it but you usually lose the speedometer and tachometer.
Very cool, Bruce! Congrats! Can't wait to see more content with it. Remember, it's old, and the only way to make it completely reliable is to go front to back and fix, repair, or update everything. As in sure many people have already pointed out, the majority of our trucks DO have 5th wheels on them, this truck was what you'd call a showman's truck (alteast in the UK) you can haul loads in configurations that aren't usually legal, but for circuses/fairgrounds, they can obtain a licence/permit (I believe) that allows them to bypass that.
Usually you'd have 1 of 2 configurations of trucks and trailers
1. A semi truck unit with a 5th wheel and a trailer
2. A semi box truck with a nearly equal length trailer pulled by drawbar or dolly
(Both of these configurations being limited to a length just under 19 metre's, around 62 feet)
The picture you showed of it driving in Europe is close to the 2nd configuration in setup, but alot longer, because of the showman's load he is hauling.
Just to go off on a tangent, showman's trucks are some of the only examples of more than one trailer being hauled in the UK, it's usually something like a truck with a box on the back, pulling a ride, then pulling a caravan, which is a cool sight to see when usually we're limited to a just under 19m configuration for both of our configurations.
there is a 3rd type thats similar to the semi box truck. its a truck with a container chassis installed on it that takes containers or special swap bodies that fit on this chassis. most of the time they also have a trailer that does the same. thats the more common one if you see a semi box truck with a trailer. real semi box trucks with a fixed box usually are smaller 12t trucks like the scania p250 or the mercedes atego. they also tend to not use trailers as much
The truck is from Juni 10, 1997 (according the Dutch licence plate) This truck is used for transporting the equipment of a mobile fair company. Most of the mobile fair companies use trucks which had done a lot of miles (kilometers in Europe) and therefore are cheap to buy. The mobile fair companies don't travel a lot and also not long distances. Also the fifth wheel is used a lot in Europe we have lots of trailers. FYI the text "Schousteller Betrief" is a German tekst. These trucks don't have to pay roadtax (Maut) in Germany
Yea fifth wheel is almost essential as soon as we are talking about anything but just a box lorry. Oversized cargo van. Even with a cargo bed or a box on the back axle your most likely still pulling a dolly behind you with a fifth wheeler on it. It is a very short trailer with a fifth wheeler on it And in turn you can hook a full on EU trailer on it. Or even just strait up running a link trailer that connect to a lorry with just a fifth wheeler on it. It accomplishes the same thing in practice. Just depends on the lorry/truck fleet usage.
Never seen a cargo box single axle that also pulls a wagon. And ontop of it being a truck/lorry with a fifth wheeler??? What a odd creature this was in its past life. It was pulling a wagon trailer. When nowadays we are mostly running the USA style trailers on a dolly trailer that in turn connects to a lorry/truck without a fifth wheeler built onto it. That is 3 vehicles in the road train. 3 different registered vehicles. A wagon is a complete vehicle that do not need a dolly. A trailer needs a fifth wheeler connection. Agen it is complicated but point is that fifth wheeler is VERY common in EU. Even in the lands of Scania. Maybe just less common to have it on the lorry/truck. Still plenty of them exist.
Agen with licenses we in Sweden run up to 25.25 meter long vehicle trains without a fifth wheeler on the turck. Behind it you just connect a wagon trailer OR a dolly trailer since that would give you that fifth wheeler to pull a truck trailer. A full sized EU trailer usually then end you up at 25.25 meter long. With the normal accepted max limit being 24m. But there are plenty of trucks with just a fifth wheeler all over EU and Scandinavia. You need to shorten a full size truck without a fifth wheeler OR the trailer needs to be shorter to fit in 24meters. Why it is far more common to get the exemption for 25.25meters transport.
You can also run a link trailer from a fifth wheeler truck and reach up to 25.25m or less if you need. But link trailer trucks are a bit more rare of a vehicle on the road. Useful to ditch the link part or the trailer for tight places to load and unload. And still keep the capacity of any other vehicle combination. But links are the rare one for sure. Nothing else.
Accepted weight limits are general up to 64 000kg hole road train weight. And with some licenses up to 74 000kg. Just rare and limited to special road ways and bulk transport of wood etc. It is hard to get and experimental. Still with exceptions you can get the green light for more ofc with the right paperwork. Military for example.

Hello Bruce. the schania truck officially comes from Holland I saw your video I think damn I drove in there before. Yes I worked at the fair for a few years and I know this question to me how did that truck get to America. But I rode it when I was young. Vermolen was a fairground operator, this truck comes from the Netherlands Holland
One thing you should know. This ain't a eaton fuller shifter. You have to clutch in for every gear you go through. Otherwise, great seeing scanias in america 🔥🔥🔥
Greetings from Denmark, That is a real Euro truck, we got plenty of those Scania V8's here. But a small correction our long hauls here in Europe are done with 5 wheelers, they are not rare. The dedicated fixed trucks also have a longer wheelbase. The short tractors without 5 wheels are usually used for carnivals, traveling amusement parks and circuses to pool around caravans and equipment. The front trailer latch also suggests this had been a carnival tractor. ( looking more in dept I see the sticker on the side: "Vermolen Amusement" Yep no doubt that is a carnival tractor )
This truck was used to haul carnival rides around the Netherlands, pretty cool to see it in the US but it's probably going to need a lot of work.
Funny to see you so happy about it. In norway we have 10s of thousands of those trucks and many many more just like it just with six sylinder diesel-biogas or some other fuels
It would be nice to see you restore the Scalia to its original glory! Nice! 🌴🌴🌴🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🚛🚛🚛
This is an ex-showman’s wagon so basically it would have had something like a generator on the back to power the ride/arcade that it pulled but most trucks like his in Europe would have a fifth wheel on it to haul a trailer the same as in the us
Also the steps on that 4 series arr like gold dust so if you break them and need to replace then good luck haha
Probably towed a draw bar at the same time, thus the extended rear and weights.
That truck sounds badass in motion!
Hi Bruce, this thing used to belong a traveling fair (company or family). It used to be registered in the Netherlands and this is just the way these kinds of people liked to tow their stuff. We have loads of 5th wheel trailers here, but the traveling fair people tend to have their attractions behind the truck in the way you showed in the image and the guy talked about, the weights are just for added traction cause those things weigh quite a lot. Kinda nice seeing a dutch truck in the us
Reason why it’s an older truck and not a newer truck is because you’re not allowed to import vehicles younger then 25 years.
I was too comment on it.
@@miles5600 also the import tax on trucks is 25% so it helps a LOT with the price to have an older, less expensive truck if you're importing
@@boxr_4214 that’s true, although i would love to see a brand new scania in the US hauling
Hey I used to help build carnival rides with Vermolen, thats funny! Enjoy the Scania, I love these trucks!
