If you notice their chests are under developed and this isn't because of a lack of steroids, it's because they weren't benching or using fly movements. Their emphasis was more on overhead presses and they didn't have flat benches.

Actually the pics of Indian you saw the followed a routine which Eugene Sandows promoted. They were mainly from Kolkata area. That was the most developed city in whole Indian sub-continent till 1940. They learned thru books of that. Their exercise regime was 3x 30-50 reps with light weights. They used most of the free weight exercises we do today. They were modern city dwellers and were mostly from well to do families.
'Muscle Control and Barbell Exercises' is a book writtten by Indian bodybuilder which highlights various methods of diet, exercise and healing methods.

He went to a gym that was super strict about juice like they'd question you when you first came and if you bulked up real fast they'd pull you aside and kick you the fuck out. Remember that doing things SPECIFICALLY for hypertrophy is always going to make you bigger than just general physical activity. It could be liver, organ meat, quarter or half a chicken or red meat. His staples were fava beans, and lentils. It was all he could afford. Back in the day, people didn't have Orea for breakfast and sit around to watch TV. Fat people eat loads of meat too, not just processed food and sugar.

How to Get Strong and how to Stay So, written by William Blaikie, and published in 1879, is a treasure. It's very difficult to find but copies of the pages are available online. I have an original edition of the book but I rarely open it these days because it's so fragile.

They didn't have bench press or machines and they didn't know much about diet. In fact one of the bodybuilders from this era had in their plan that they would hit chest by moving dumbells in like basically the same motion that would be done on a machine press. The problem with that being that's a front delt exercise not a chest exercise.
I wonder how much of a part the food they were eating back then played a part. The soil in the ground rich in minerals and no gmo's probably played a larger role to attain their lean bodys than most would think

When part of the picture is unusually smooth, it’s often a sign of airbrushing. Especially areas that aren’t in focus.
Highly unlikely that they had access to better food. Most of them were most likely on high-carb-diets for most of their lives, as was the norm those days. Fresh vegetables or fruit were only seasonably available, meat was not necessarily the best cut, and hardly affordable on a regular basis. They probably ate more eggs.

You can have a lot more mass as well natural. The problem is maintaining a shredded natural physique. To be in competition shape at 200lbs for a few weeks or months a year is obtainable. But to be 200lbs shredded all year long is a different story.. 165lbs or under is more realistic for a natty to also be shredded. This is just generally, there will always be exceptions, and this is for people under 6'1". At 6"5' 200lbs fits differently on the frame.
This confirms even stronger to me that some folks I see are 100 on gear. Lol. These pics show guys who are shredded & have crazy definition for sure, BUT they don’t have muscles abruptly bulging out of muscles & don’t look like the Hulk.
One thing I would think plays into that tho is the lifestyle back then , natural test levels would of been a lot hiring due to things like oestrogen , micro plastics etc etc that have reduced our natural test as a average male population over time
Testosterone was synthesized a few decades earlier than it became available for general use. Effevtively everyone before mid-1950s can be assumed clean.

This is what a lean physique looks like. This is practical, efficient, and healthy. When you bulk past your bodies natural limit, you’re basically limiting how many years you want to live.
Roman sculptors and painters were creating works of art featuring incredible, superhuman physiques. Steroids CERTAINLY didn't exist back then but these artist were drawing thede images and inspirations from something that must have existed.

my pops was a natty bodybuilder in the 80's he told me all about that lifestyle back in the day. He went to a gym that was super strict about juice like they'd question you when you first came and if you bulked up real fast they'd pull you aside and kick you the fuck out.

Remember that doing things SPECIFICALLY for hypertrophy is always going to make you bigger than just general physical activity. The entire point of resistance training is that it’s the MOST efficient and effective way to trigger hypertrophy, working hard and playing outside did literally nothing for their physiques.

I visited Clarke Quay in Singapore where they have displayed old black and white photos of the docks back in the 1800's, being that Sg is hot as hell all the dock workers and coolies in it were topless and everyone of them looked as jacked as these old pics.
It’s also what you grew up around. As a kid in my neighborhood there were alot of natural physics walking around. It was motivational not just that it made you want to do something with it in sports and we did. Football basketball track wrestling you name it. Steroids were nowhere around in my neighborhood

It could be liver, organ meat, quarter or half a chicken or red meat. His staples were fava beans, and lentils. It was all he could afford. Back in the day, people didn't have Orea for breakfast and sit around to watch TV. Fat people eat loads of meat too, not just processed food and sugar.

Food was also higher quality in those times because the soil was rich in vital minerals and vitamins. In fact one of the bodybuilders from this era had in their plan that they would hit chest by moving dumbells in like basically the same motion that would be done on a machine press. The problem with that being that's a front delt exercise not a chest exercise.

Those indian bodybuilders were on fish diet most of the time , broiler chickens weren't a thing back. Their book mentions equal amounts of veggies and fish and training

This is actually where the term “airbrushing” comes from. Artists would edit photos by airbrushing over them to cover acne, scars, or even exaggerate features.
Some photos of women with a small waist from corseting were achieved through airbrushing.
When part of the picture is unusually smooth, it’s often a sign of airbrushing. Especially areas that aren’t in focus.

Highly unlikely that they had access to better food. Most of them were most likely on high-carb-diets for most of their lives, as was the norm those days. Fresh vegetables or fruit were only seasonably available, meat was not necessarily the best cut, and hardly affordable on a regular basis. They probably ate more eggs.

About the "poisoning": back then, food quality overall was terrible worldwide, millions of people died because of natural food poisoning, most children were malnourished, healthcare was inaccessible to most.
The simple truth is, food quality today is better than ever before. Food availability is better than ever before. Food diversity is better than ever before. I've tried arguing with people too many times to get them to see reason. It's literally an ego reflex like you described. Someone feels bad about the kind of shape that they're in they will never accept that it's possible to be better without money, pharmaceuticals, a trainer, tons of free time. It's a cope. You can't break through a cope because the person is shielding their fragile ego with it.
Genetics and predispositions play a huge role. TRT and steroids have their place by making these physiques more available to everyone else.
You gotta remember people were much shorter back then. Short people appear to have bigger muscles because of the relative size of their frame.

You missed one pre steroids Indian bodybuilder Manohar Aich, he ate rice 4 times a day and hit the gym till 101, he lived for 104 yrs. People back then had less stress and cleaner food and lots of physical activity.

You can have a lot more mass as well natural.
The problem is maintaining a shredded natural physique. To be in competition shape at 200lbs for a few weeks or months a year is obtainable. But to be 200lbs shredded all year long is a different story.. 165lbs or under is more realistic for a natty to also be shredded.
This is just generally, there will always be exceptions, and this is for people under 6'1". At 6"5' 200lbs fits differently on the frame.
This confirms even stronger to me that some folks I see are 100 on gear. Lol. These pics show guys who are shredded & have crazy definition for sure, BUT they don’t have muscles abruptly bulging out of muscles & don’t look like the Hulk.

Testosterone was synthesized a few decades earlier than it became available for general use. Effevtively everyone before mid-1950s can be assumed clean.

This is what a lean physique looks like. This is practical, efficient, and healthy. When you bulk past your bodies natural limit, you’re basically limiting how many years you want to live.

Roman sculptors and painters were creating works of art featuring incredible, superhuman physiques. Steroids CERTAINLY didn't exist back then but these artist were drawing thede images and inspirations from something that must have existed.
