    😴 Rough Mornings: UK vs USA - Advanced English Podcast Episode
    🎧 Start your day off with this relatable episode of the Advanced English Podcast, where hosts Kat from the USA and Mark from the UK share their tales of challenging mornings. This episode explores the universal theme of difficult starts to the day, offering both humor and language learning opportunities.
    🇺🇸 Kat recounts a particularly tough morning that began with the all-too-common mistake of scrolling on her phone late into the night. She describes a restless night's sleep, the chaos of getting her kids ready, which felt like "herding cats," and the rush to get out the door, setting a hectic tone for her day. Now at her desk, she's determined to overcome the morning's grogginess and focus on work, promising herself an early night.
    🇬🇧 Mark shares his version of a rough morning, attributing his grogginess to an extended late-night phone session. He talks about a night of disrupted sleep, a morning filled with trying to manage uncooperative kids, and the stress of starting the day behind schedule. Sitting at his desk, he's focused on shaking off the morning's chaos and regaining his energy, with plans for an early bedtime to recover.
    📚 Throughout the episode, Kat and Mark break down various English idioms and expressions related to sleep, morning routines, and family life. This episode is an excellent resource for advanced English learners looking to expand their everyday vocabulary and understanding of cultural nuances in morning routines.
    🌟 We've all had those mornings-share your story in the comments section! And don't forget to subscribe for more engaging episodes.

    Thank you, guys, for this amazing lesson! I enjoyed it. It would be great to understand those tiny differences in English synonyms to use them correctly in different situations!
    Yesterday I listened to an interesting topic about the history of “have got”, why it so largely used in our days instead of simply “have”. It’s the deep historical storytelling by our linguist nicknamed Skjold Skefsson. I like such stories better than fictions.

    So happy to start season 2✨ talking about a rough morning is a quite interesting topic as most of us scroll too much on our phones.... Getting to bed far too late.... And the result is you feeling like if a train had hit you... We're glued to our mobiles far too much😢 that's why I usually watch your videos while I exercise or walk.... Concentrating on your perfect prononciation.
    Not feeling groggy in order to make the most of it😊.

    Hi Kat teacher, Mark teacher, your lessons are really good! I learnt a lot! I hardly remember that one of your lessons mentioned about the phase “run against the clock”. May I ask the example when and how to use this phase! Thank you!

    • @highlevellistening
      @highlevellistening  2 місяці тому +1

      I'm happy to share the expression and its meaning!
      race against the clock
      and running against the clock
      means to hurry/rush/go quickly because there is a deadline or a time that something needs to be finished
      If we are trying to be on time, but we're running late, we might be racing/running against the clock to try to arrive/finish on time.
      Examples:
      We might be able to finish the project in 2 weeks, but we'll really be racing against the clock to finish on time. (We will need to work very very quickly to finish on time)
      It's a race against the clock to see who will finish on time! (This feels like a competition)
      We're running against the clock today, everyone please do your best and do it quickly by the end of the day!
      Hope that helps!

    I really enjoy watching your video, and I have learned a lot from you all. There is one point that I could not understand in this sentence:"only to wake up feeling like I hadn't slept at all'. could you tell me how to use 'only to'. Big thanks

    • @highlevellistening
      @highlevellistening  2 місяці тому

      Great question!
      Only to... is similar to saying "sadly, in the end" or "this wasn't what I expected" we often use it to show that were saddened, surprised or disappointed by something we were happy about before.
      "I did all this hard work but in the end I am disappointed"
      "I did all of this hard work only to feel disappointed in the end."
      I spent a lot of money only to be disappointed by the bad quality of my purchase.
      I went to bed early (good thing!) but in the end I woke up tired (bad thing)
      I did everything right, I went to bed early, I put away my phone only to wake up feeling tired the next morning.
      hope that helps! it is indeed a more advanced phrase, hope it's more clear now.

    Good day! I am happy to meet a new season:)
    Could you explain statement “ is way past” more? Is “past” the verb there? I mixed up with gramma of it.
    “I found myself scrolling on my phone way past my bedtime“
    The meaning is clear, but I can’t remember this due to misunderstanding the gramma of this sentence.
    Thank you:)

    • @highlevellistening
      @highlevellistening  3 місяці тому +1

      hi good afternoon! Nice to see you again :)
      I found myself (found is the verb here) doing an activity
      way: more than, beyond
      past my bedtime: past is actually acting a preposition here, "past my bedtime" is a prepositional phrase to describe *when* I was doing the scrolling
      it would be similar to another prepositional phrase "after my bedtime"
      hope that helps! thanks so much for watching

      Good morning!
      Excuse me/ Pardon me is often used when we are interrupting or stopping someone because we need to talk to them.
      Excuse me, could you help me?
      I'm sorry, or Sorry is used when you feel bad about something.
      I'm sorry, I don't understand, could you help me?
      Excuse me, sorry for interrupting, could you help me?
      Hope that helps!

    I'm really love this lesson, but i want to ask, what the meaning "kind of"??

    • @highlevellistening
      @highlevellistening  3 місяці тому

      Kind of is a common filler word that means, a little, a bit
      Sort of and kind of are very common in American English

      "Oh my gosh" is like "Oh my god", or "Oh my word", you can use it when you are surprised, tired, stressed or annoyed!
