- Discover the phenomenon known as asymmetrical sleep, where parts of an animal's brain are asleep while other areas remain active.
--
Many animals need sleep. But all of the threats and demands animals face don’t just go away when it’s time to doze. That’s why a range of birds, mammals, and even humans experience some degree of asymmetrical sleep, where parts of the brain are asleep and other areas are more active. So, how does it work? Masako Tamaki explores how animals' brains remain vigilant even at their most vulnerable.

I guess this is what happens when you're a deep sleeper, but when you know you have to wake up early for something very very important the next morning, you will still wake up on your own several times before the alarm starts ringing, and be ready to get up at any second
Huh I thought that was just me lol
that happens because your brain has a timer and it knows when to wake up (based on what time you woke up the past days)

Can you please make a video on maladaptive daydreaming, or daydreaming in general.
Bro maladaptive wht is this?
@@nandaverma1647 its not officially a disorder ,but it has been found that a few people tend to daydream abnormally lot compared to others may it be when introduced to a problematic situation(even exam or school ) or just generally , it's not confirmed that it's uncontrollable but as someone with this condition (self diagnosed ) I would say we might have control upto an extent but the situation can really take over . There's a lot more to it , It would be really helpful for me if Ted ed made a vid about it .
As someone who constantly drift focus from conversations to own thoughts and fantasies, I can relate to you. It's really inconvenient especially when there are extremely important things, but my brain just refuses to listen 😢

Can we appreciate the staggeringly amazing job the animators did on this one?
Like who can even imagine a walnut falling from the tree symbolising the brain!?
Somebody call Robert Langdon
Yeh have seen many of these "can we appreciate" comments on Ted. Though the point stands and they do a very good job with their animations
@HIMANI PANT Yes but would you have the presence of mind to think of a guy under a tree when you're thinking about sleep?
Most people know that a walnut looks like a brain. Just like most people would see the connection of the falling nut to Newton.... But yeah. Sure, whatever impress I guess...
@HIMANI PANT Agree

@@nandaverma1647 We can help you out! Here's our video: bit.ly/TEDEdSleepParalysis
You can wake up from a sleep paralysis by holding your breath. Your brain realises that something's going on and it instantly awakes all your parts. You welcome.

After having two in-home invasions and always having the fear of my daughter getting injured, I found that I was sleeping with one ear open, so to speak, since 1999.
Now that my daughter is away at college and I'm semi-retired....
I'm now sleeping a lot.
I honestly feel like I'm making up for lost time.
Damn at that point I would just buy a really nice security system
Unfort. you cannot make up for lost sleep. I am glad to hear you are safe and sleeping better tho :)
Maybe that's also why my sleep has been shittey for nearly a decade and a half, but the person who was most affected by the invasions we've had had passed away two years ago.
It's why I've taken sleep aids on an almost regular basis.
TED-Ed: humans are more vigilante when asleep in new environments

I've always considered myself a light sleeper and easy to wake. One thing I always found strange was how often I would wake up a few minutes before getting woken up. About 2 years ago, I got woken up by a noise outside, but I still managed to wake up about a minute before that. That's when a realization hit me. I think part of my brain is always awake, processing sounds, but it's short term, so it's all forgotten. When I get startled awake, those memories are still there, and they get processed and it feels like I've been awake for a few minutes because I have a few minutes of memories being processed.
I think that counts as being awake and asleep at the same time.
Same, I'm a light sleeper. I also experience waking up a few minutes or sometimes, an hour before my alarm starts ringing. Any slightest sound, light or touch can really woke me up that's why I wanted to sleep in a very peaceful room so my sleep won't be disturbed.
That's pretty cool
sleep paralysis?
I learned more about animals sleeping than humans… bit of a let down, but very informative!
Haha same. The info about one open eye was completely new to me
This is probably the explanation behind my experience before. Years ago, I spent most of my lunch breaks taking naps. Nothing unusual, right? However, I noticed something weird. I was asleep but I could still hear and even follow the conversations around me. I knew I was asleep because I was dreaming at the same time. Like I would suddenly wake up and say “whoah! I just had a dream about this, etc”… people would give me this look that implied “of course you had a dream because you were asleep”. But I couldn’t explain to them that I was asleep and even dreaming but how come I know what they were talking about while I was sleeping. This video finally gave me the explanation that I’ve been looking for. For years I thought I was just hallucinating. 😉

Another way humans can sleep with one part of their brain more active than the rest is in lucid dreaming, during which they are aware of the fact that they are dreaming and can actively interact with its elements
Where I live, we call being half awake and asleep "fishing" or 钓鱼. This is due to the fact that your head bops up and down trying to stay awake but your too tired for Calculus at 8.00am in the morning
祝你年年有鱼🐟hhhhh
I like that. Doing math early in the morning is always horrible.
fascinating. this explains why I find it easier to go back to sleep when I get out of bed with only one eye open. I didn't realize that to so many other animals did this too.
i hate when i'm almost falling in deep sleep, then something comes into my mind and i go "no, noooo! don't think about it, don't think about real life!" and i think about it and TADA! Fully awake.
This is me dude!
Oh my god you are so funny!
I lived 50 yrs. with little sleep. I wondered why I never dreamed. I had other problems too and at one point I couldn't walk.
I went to a concert in Canada and didn't sleep the whole time. And when I got back, I went straight to work. 56 hrs. With no sleep.
Then I was diagnosed with Fybromyalgia and my life began at that point. With medication, I have finally begun to dream and feel rested. I'm not in constant pain for the first time and life is more bearable. It's amazing what sleep can do.

My brain did this after I had a baby. It wouldn't let me fall fully asleep and I was always in a state of high alert. If baby cried or whimpered, or even made slight movement while i was holding her I would snap wide awake again. It didn't feel like I fell into deep sleep ever and if I slept I woke up every 30 min to one hour. It was pure agony and I hated it, but it was the biological way my motherly instincts kept me awake to take care of my newborn's needs
I don’t know when I last laughed so hard. You folks are so funny ! Thanks so much, I needed that :)

Hello from the U.S. I’m not sleeping either…. Or maybe I’m half asleep.
I clearly remember one night many years ago. I was in my bed, neither awake nor sleeping. I was thinking about this very tall animal with long legs and a long neck. I also knew, that in several European languages it was called almost the same, but I didn't remember the word giraffe (English), giraf (Danish) or sjiraff (Norwegian). However, I clearly remembered the word twiga (swahili). I was conceived in East Africa by North European parents, who returned home a couple of months before I was born. I have never been in East Africa since I was born, and I don't speak or understand swahili, only very few words, I picked up during my childhood.
Productivity type: In my work career I traveled from home frequently. During this time I had an unbreakable habit of always staying in Marriott properties. I learned to love the familiar feel and vibe and after a long journey. I cherished hearing the same scripted words from different clerks using the same script as before. Same fixtures, furnishing, bedding, towels, soap. I slept better this way and it boosted my performance and energy.
I really like the quotes at the beginning of every video
Yes, sometimes when I'm super sleepy i close my eyes and see dream like images while being able to move and control them, a sudo-sleep if you will
When I was a child sleeping & dreaming in my room my mom would barge in to wake me for school. At times she would just start talking to me while I was still asleep. There was a rare moment where I was dreaming and I was hearing her voice talking to me only it was being spoken through a character from the dream I was in. What’s crazy is that I actually talked back to the character in the dream and (according to my mother) i was actually speaking the words in real life , I was laying there in my bed asleep having a conversation with my mother while I was dreaming!
Only once????

The best memory reinforcement is to take images of every thing. All my travels, special occasions & family pix. I have about 1.5 terabytes of photos, videos & occasions stored in three copies on independent hard drives to protect their loss. Often I slip into clicking on photos & videos to enjoy immensely memories that I had almost forgotten. Looking at the thousands of photos & video clips I live my life again with great enjoyment as all the memories dimmed by time come back clearly to match the memories in my mind. I have done so many things, traveled to so many places and met just wonderful, educated, brilliant people. My photos & videos allow me to meet & befriend them again even though many of them have long passed.

I create elaborate stories in my head and usually continue them at night. Normally it’s the same story with a little variation. There have been times when my brain has worked so hard on keeping the story going that I don’t fall asleep properly and it feels like I was awake half the night so focused even though my brain tends to wander after I fall asleep.
I hate when it happens because then I wake in the night and night feels very long and tiresome.

I wanted to see if anyone has similar half-asleep experiences to mine in the comments, but everyone just reuses the same joke as how they are half-asleep during boring activities 😐
Sometimes when I am very tired and try to fall asleep, within minutes I enter a state of "sleepy-wakefulness" where I see made-up images and events that I did not consciously brought up, very reminiscent of dreams. The difference with actual dreaming is that I am still somewhat conscious at the time and I am able to properly snap out of it if I so want to.
