      kelvinfried chicken wouldn't be a very good cooler if it starts degrading from liquid loss after 5 months

    • @JusttheEdge
      @JusttheEdge 6 років тому +1

      kelvinfried chicken that's a custom loop. AIO use tubes with very low permeability. Also if more air is in the loop than it started with it had to get there somehow. That would mean liquid loss for there to be room for more air.

    • @JusttheEdge
      @JusttheEdge 6 років тому

      kelvinfried chicken I'm not sure but one would think a reasonable lifespan to be 2-3yrs for an AIO.

      There are coolant additives such as Royal Purple's Purple Ice or Red Line's Water Wetter or Lucas' Super Coolant. These are supposed to increase the heat conductivity of the coolant by lowering the surface tension of the coolant. Purple Ice claims to lower operating temps by up to 25 degrees F. Granted, that is in an extreme case, but you see my point that adding some of this coolant additive could help lower temps further. These temps are by no means cpu killers but it's always an option lower them a few degrees while you're in there.

    Fun fact ethylene-glycol is less efficient as a coolant then just distilled water. I don't know the difference but it's enough to make a difference. The reason they use E-G is because it wont freeze till about 72f below 0. It also acts as a lubricant and corrosion inhibitor.
    As an old drag racer we were asked to not use e-g coolant on 12 second and faster cars, so what we did was use water and a product called redline water wetter. There are different companies making similar products. It'll obviously freeze and need a lubricant and a method of corrosion resistance which is what the water wetter was for and in the off season we would swap back to e-g for freeze protection.
    I've often wondered if water wetter would make a viable biocide/corrosion inhibitor for this kinda stuff since you shouldn't have to wonder if the loop will freeze.
    I'm guessing your more water coolant cools a little better then the factory mix because of the less e-g in the system.

    Hi Steve . Is it a good idea for units not easy to service to just cut the hose and add a reservoir , when the waterlevel starts running low after 5 years or so ? I'm thinking of getting a Kraken x62 but the thought of having to get a new one after a couple of years worries me a bit , since even the best aircoolers like the Noctua or Coolermaster ones are a lot cheaper and last way longer . Even if an aircooler's fan would die , replacing it would still be cheap compared to replacing an entire aio .
    Thanx

      I've had the same H100 for over 7 years. Only within the last 2 months have I noticed a spike in idle temps around 60c which isnt even tragic. Idk if you want to Frankenstein CLCs like how you mentioned. I think the risk of leaking outweighs the benefits.

    I refilled mine Kaken X60 this summer and it was pain in the a**. Under the plastic cap there is a ~3mm screw, so you need a syringe with a needle to fill. But it still clogs when filling because of water surface tension. You fill in few grams of water, close hole with finger, run pump, and rinse and repeat that process a lot. In case of why I did refill - pumps impeller axis got dirty and jammed impeller, causing cpu to overheat and shutdown system. Used distilled water to refill.

    • @Thunterise
      @Thunterise 6 років тому

      You used only distilled water? No biocides? Because if so... Then I'm afraid it won't last long and you'll have to buy a new AiO in a few months.

    • @lagynas
      @lagynas 6 років тому +1

      Half a year has passed already. PC running 24/7. If distilled water stays in bottles on the shelf for years and nothing happens to them, how different situation is in AIO?

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 6 років тому

      Mine is also refilled with distilled water (on a unit from before Dell made Alienware, got the AIO super cheap). You should dump it out every half to full year and it will last longer (it will get gunk, the thing you did not take into account sitting in a bottle is, that bottle is plastic, it doesn't have mixed metals and galvanic corrosion).
      Interesting note on water stored in bottles: My grandparents stored tap water in bottles for years, and once its 5 years old and you don't notice the 2010 date in sharpie and drink it, its still clear, but tastes old and stale. They will grow algae if they are exposed to sunlight though, but this one was stored away from light so it gave no warning.

So I was curious as to "why", in Steve's case, he doesnt pronounce them and how it affects words with a /ŋ/ sound in the middle. Curious because I'm interested in foreign laguages, especially English(I'm Swedish). I think you're right that it's not a conscious decision but only Steve can answer this :) I'm genuinly interested.

    @Gamers Nexus Steve, id be interested in seeing a video where you attempted to create a mounting plate for the TR4 AIO's onto smaller CPU's and see if its possible, and if it performs better, the same or worse than AIO's made for the smaller CPU's. My reasoning for this idea is that the TR4 blocks are the largest ones sold, and IHS sizes fluctuate for different CPU's, especially over 'tocks' and buying a TR4 AIO and creating your own mounting could allow you to reuse the AIO for years to come over numerous different CPU's.

    • @Najvalsa
      @Najvalsa 6 років тому +1

      The thing is, it's not the IHS size that matters its whether the micro-fins on the cold plate cover the entire die area (e.g. completely cover all four dies of a TR), and single die CPUs only tend to be of a certain size because of how silicon is cut.
      For example, the EK TR4 block covers the entire IHS but its micro-fins only cover half of the die area so it doesn't perform as well as the XSPC TR4 block.
      Not to mention that with the size of the TR block you'd be running into interference with the VRMs, and the memory.

    An important question that should be asked or answered, before some one tends to refill a Water Cooler without actual Water Reservoir/Tank. Is there actually a small pocket of air inside it, or is it filled to the brim? Because, We all learned that in school.
    High temperature has expanding effects. Air can be compressed, so no biggie. Water how ever, can not be compressed!
    Long story short, if the user refiled the AIO to the max, without Air inside. Is there a chance for the AIO to burst? Cause temps?

    • @Thunterise

      I'm pretty sure the reason these AiO's use the tubing that they use is because these tubes can expand a little bit, which fights this problem.

I have mine filled to every last drop (took a good amount of time shaking, and adding with a syringe, but it works great. And actually mine has steel hoses, so they would expand less than rubber hoses. Worked just fine pulling over 300w on my FX-8350 (past 9590 speeds). my question is can you use regular car antifreeze, as it has all the anti corrosion and biocides in it already.

      The Divine Hammer's Woodworks not really, your temps would be slightly worse and the platic and hoses could react badly with it.

    could the correct ratio of the 2 liquids be about the same as the 50/50 automotive coolants. I think it is a 50/50 gallon bottle???

      You can just refill with automotive antifreeze unless they use some weird plastic (I use 100% antifreeze in a water cooled tablet I made. I didn't dilute it because I use a rusty steel pipe radiator mixed with copper block in my nuclear reactor Fallout 4 theme). It will get rust chunks within 2 or 3 days with distilled water, or antifreeze has lasted rust free for almost a year now, so I'm a big fan of anti-freeze, hasn't messed with my hosing or submersible pump yet.

      Use something like VW G12 or Japanese car coolants without silicates or 2-EHA. Don't use green coolants. Also don't use these with PETG tubes

    For just one or two degrees difference? All the trouble and your warranty?
    Just let it be. If you want a big difference, build a custom Waterloop.
    And after a couple of years you probably buy a new one.

      Did you watch the video? Steve explicitly stated the purpose of this experiment isn't to increase performance. It's a proof-of-concept for AIO owners to maintain baseline performance over long periods of time.

      This entire exercise is to prove you don't HAVE to buy a new AIO after 5 years if your unit is serviceable.

      Justin Bernardo that’s a option indeed. But after 5 years I will swap pc parts. Because there are better Watercoolblocks on the market.

    • @jakegarrett8109

      Sounds like you would want to go with custom loops. If you want to upgrade blocks often, it would be more sensible to just change blocks. Besides that, a custom loop will outperform an AIO anyways.
      AIO's are easy to refill, so its like throwing away a custom loop every time your low on water, its pretty wasteful when it takes very little effort. You also wouldn't be going with AIO if you wanted the best performance in the first place.

  • @mpeugeot
    @mpeugeot 6 років тому +1

    Custom loop... It's really not that hard, and really, in the end easier to maintain. That's the right answer. I understand that many cases don't have enough room for a true custom loop system... The right answer, get a bigger case or choose a different cooler option (like air cooling). Don't get me wrong, it's cool that you proved it could be done, but it seems like more effort than it's worth (although, the AIO is usually much cheaper in the first place). After building my first custom loop a few weeks back, I can't believe that I even bothered with the AIO that I used in the first place. The AIO is still in the machine and running, because it was dedicated to the CPU. The custom loop, that cools my two graphics cards... Both keeps the temps under 50c no matter what I do to them as far as overclock/load... CPU or GPU.

    • @james2042
      @james2042 6 років тому +1

      As much as I love my loops, the last thing you want in a pc that has a long lifespan is a custom loop. Also an aio is cheaper than a full loop (although ek is doing a good job of changing that)

    • @__aceofspades
      @__aceofspades 6 років тому +5

      The biggest reason to buy AIO's is the price. Custom loops is a niche, which is why many people use fish tank pumps, to avoid paying a premium for nearly identical parts. You can buy an AIO for your CPU and a separate one for your GPU for less than the cost of a similar performance custom loop. Obviously AIO's are not viable if you want the CPU and two GPU's, but SLI and crossfire are dead.

      James Mastroianni, I think that it all depends on how exactly you set it up, I can see where it can be a real pain in the ass. Fortunately, I have what essentially is a Borg Cube, the Thermaltake X9. So the 480mm radiator is mounted along the bottom of the case. The 400ml reservoir and pump are mounted in the front top half, essentially where it can never leak on the motherboard or drives. The reservoir fill is also the highest point in the system, making it super easy to top off. Basically, I made it very easy to have enough space to make it idiot proof (because I am that idiot that it needs to be idiot proofed against).

    • @mpeugeot

      ac3ofspades878 good points, with one point of contention, SLI is not quite dead yet. Two 1080ti's in SLI is a thing of beauty when gaming. My 1080ti's were initially used for mining, however the great state of CA jacks up the electric rates so high as to negate the usefulness/profitability of these GPU's for mining... So I am using them for gaming, and I must say, I am pretty thrilled with the performance.

      There are multiple ways to build systems, and many good reasons to use a CLC or an open loop. One doesn't always need to be superior to the other.

    Makes me wonder if other mfr's will follow suit with the idea of refilling and hype the crap out of that as a sales pitch. Then again maybe none because longevity of product and end user repair is regarded as lost future revenue, which of course is a BS way of thinking.

    Who needs to worry about liquid coolant and water when you can have the NH-D15 that's so much more quieter, cheaper/cost-effective, and risk free than these lousy Asetek coolers? If you're using an ordinary mainstream processor or not overclocking, air cooling is just a so much easier, risk free, and quieter experience.

      I have experience with both air and AIO liquid coolers and I personally prefer air. That being said, those AIO coolers are far easier to mount if your mobo is already inside a case and I don't see any additional risks with them. They're not pressurized systems, if there's a leak you're going to see it after opening the packaging. Noise levels can often be higher with the pumps working but not all units are bad in that regard. They also offer more versatility in that radiator mounting points can be very creatively placed by case manufacturers, which allows for unique layouts and improved air flow. Just imagine trying to shove that NH-D15 in a mini-ITX gaming case. On the other hand there's quite a few of those with 240 rad support.
      Also, the single most important thing: Noctua uses feces colored fans and to people who can see color that is often a problem. Every time I see one of their fans I wonder how they stay in business. Most people probably don't know about Be Quiet!.

    • @rogerj412
      @rogerj412 6 років тому +5

      Dude I'm not sure what you're smoking but that Noctua cooler, as good as it is, is not less than AIOs. It's almost $90 and there are plenty of AIOs on the market that are less expensive.
