Charles has had a tough life. When he was a kid, he got stuck in a well for 24 days. Like, why weren't his parents wondering where he was? Then when he was 20 his friends KIDNAPPED him and he had to pee in a tube to get a ping pong ball for some reason. Why a ping pong ball? Caylus is right, he needed new friends. Then when he was older, maybe in his 30's his wife tried to POISON him. So when he got even OLDER possibly in his 60's he decided to live alone as a hermit because he no longer trusted people. Which is honestly understandable. But then he got MURDERED by one of the only three people he ever interacted with. Poor poor Charles.
