  • The Bendigo Tramways have been in operation since June 1890. From that time, the citizens of Bendigo have experienced battery, steam and electric traction as the principal modes of propulsion for their trams. Over the years, the Bendigo Tramways have been owned by various operators who adopted different corporate identities.
The tramway operators' identities and the periods during which they had control of daily tram services were:
The Sandhurst and Eaglehawk Electric Tramway Company Ltd 14th June 1890 to 23rd September 1890 battery
The Bendigo Tramways Company Limited 1st February 1892 to June 1902 steam
The Electric Supply Company of Victoria 15th April 1903 to 30th June 1934 electric
The State Electricity Commission of Victoria 30th June 1934 to 16th April 1972 electric
The Bendigo Trust 9th December 1972 to present electric
Despite these varied names, to most people, the tramways at Bendigo were simply known as the Bendigo Tramways - a name that has endured right up to the present day.
On 11th September 1972, the State Government of Victoria granted The Bendigo Trust permission to operate a Vintage 'Talking' Tram tourist service between the Central Deborah Gold Mine in Violet Street, through Bendigo and on to the Bendigo Joss House Temple at North Bendigo. Since then, the Trust has continued to maintain and operate the tramway and as of 16 October 2010 has now been custodian of the tramways longer than any other operator.

I grew up a few hundred metres from the North Bendigo terminus. It was one of our playgrounds. The tram blokes were wonderful and would often allow us to help them do their jobs. Great fun. I was thirteen when it ended and simply refused to use the buses which replaced them, a habit I continued after moving to Melbourne in the late seventies. Never used a Melbourne bus. Trams or trains only.

Loved the tram ride to Eaglehawk. Though much has since changed, it's incredible how many of those houses and businesses still exist today and still look the same.

What a wonderful ride back in time, My name is Phillip and when my parents decided to part my mum took us from Melbourne to live in Bendigo , prior to that we use to visit my grandmother in Bendigo around 1965 onwards traveling from Melbourne to Bendigo by train on the old red rattlers ! as a child and then well into my teens Bendigo is where i grew up. I now live in W/A Mandurah but my heart will always remain and belong to Bendigo I have so many wonderful memories of Bendigo and remember so much about Bendigo, I find my self often looking for any old footage , pictures items that may take me back in time to truly an awsome place to live and grow up in. What a wonderful video to ride the tram to see the people the cars the buildings all come alive again of that time and thinking yeh i remember that i was their so cool. Will return for a visit b4 i fall of the perch!

Old TV promos and trams, two of my most favourite hobbies. Thanks for the great video. I rode on the entire Bendigo tram system, when visiting Bendigo with my dad back in 1967.

I live in Chicago but I'm currently exploring some of my Australian heritage. I've been a tram buff ever since I was a little kid riding the trams in Brisbane during the Christmas season (I was born in Gundagai and we lived near North Star, making weekly trips into Goondiwindi to buy groceries and see a movie). It seems like Bendigo is a real treasure and I would love to visit there. Also I would like to subscribe to the videos. Thanks.

What a wonderful documentary. It's great to see that most of the tramways rolling stock has been preserved and in use today 2016. Many thanks for a very informative video.

This is a wonderful video. My late father took me on the last 'regular' tram trip from Bendigo to Eaglehawk. It was a very emotional day.

My Great Grandfather may have been driving that tram. And my grandfather might have checked the ticket. Maybe. I’ll ask him. Sounds awfully familiar.

Those really long 4 wheel cars must have been exciting if they had to make an emergency stop!

I recall driving a tram to Eaglehawk easter 1965, Bill Preston was the real driver, I just usurped him.... A lot of first notch running which is not good for resistance controlled trams the trackwork needed major work.... The current "Talking Trams" have very little in common with their original counterparts....

You can see why the national road toll reached a record high by 1970 of over 1,000!
