If either Netflix of Disney+ were to purchase these four books and do them as written, and not take director's liberties, (like Disney ruined A Wrinkle In Time...TWICE) It would be really popular, maybe as much as Stranger Things. Guillermo del Toro would do this production perfectly, and succeed in giving adults nightmares.
A Quantel Paintbox of the same type that did the effects for The Tripods is currently being restored. I still have a dream of them using it and filming other actors with face replacements using DeepFake tech to keep the same look and feel of the original series.
The whole series has a "serious / just hanging on to survive" thread running throughout. It gave the series a sense of reality. I know it definitely captivated my imagination as young boy.
This, the 1980 version of Doctor Who theme and ABBA's The Visitors (song) have so much in common. And each still gives me the chills listening to them. I have always loved the rock/pop/industrial mix sound of the three songs.
Written by Ken "Prof" Freeman, a synthesizer player on the original recording of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds. As I recall, the BBC pulled the series before it was completed.
He designed his own synths. The 3rd bk was never filmed due to cash flow, I think. A feature movie is/was being planned, 2019 orig? Not sure, but as I saw commented, I do hope they use some of KF's work. I read Book 3 in my early 30's, a 5th grader had to locate it for me in the children's section, hadn't been to that section in almost 1/4 of a century. The books were diff, (no "Cognosks"), but very good. 1 of my fave pts on TV was when Fritz sneaks to the "Power Elite" line, and Pierre reveals he's in his 30's. And Fritz says not using the caps helps him learn better, to throw off Pierre's suspicion the Julian (or Julius, can't remem) trained him well. Also loved when Will, I think, killed the Tripod by hitting his sensitive area. I saw it on PBS, tho just from the 6th or 7th EP, but I knew who Will was going to see in the Hall of Beauty, even tho I'd missed most of the romance EPs. Didn't see the early EP's where Ozymandias recruited Will and Henry, didn't know he was an agent posing as a vagrant.
The third season was budgeted for the 1986 autumn season of programming. However, in spring 1985 Michael Grade and Jonathan Powell cancelled the 1986 season of Doctor Who in order to pay for the first series of EastEnders. Thanks to enablers such as Ian Levine, there was an enormous public backlash at the cancellation of Doctor Who. The BBC quickly backtracked and said Doctor Who was only temporarily postponed. However, for Doctor Who to continue, shows such as the third season of Tripods were cancelled. So we got "The Trial of a Doctor" crap instead of the conclusion of the Tripods trilogy.
I never actually caught the show, but I read the original books, by John Christopher. I really hope they get reprinted sometime. It's such a shame that some classic authors like Judy Blume, Alan Garner and CS Lewis (also adapted by the BBC) get reprints but some, like not only John Christopher, but Willard Price, Brian Earnshaw and Nicholas Fisk get quietly forgotten and you have to go to the British Library to re-read them.
The Tripod-books of John Christopher were in my city library. I read them all over the weekend, not much sleep. The librarian looked at me lie I was crazy when I came back on monday asking for more.
And then you can also hear the similarities between the structure of this and Freeman's later theme from Casualty. Se you can trace a line from The War of the Worlds through to Casualty!
Doctor Who has the potential to just keep going. What makes it so disappointing about the Tripods is that there was an ending and they didn't finish it! :(
jarin radford I don't know, if they were more determined to finish the first books I think so. It might've been more exciting starting out in pre-Tripods world...
Blame the Doctor Who fans. When Doctor Who was cancelled in 1985, they made such a stink that the BBC changed their mind, and recommissioned Doctor Who for 1986 by using the money allocated to complete the Tripods. Note how Doctor Who in 1985 was 13 x 45 minutes, whilst Tripods was 12 x 25 minutes. Doctor Who miraculously came back in 1986 as 14 x 25 minutes in exactly the same time slot that Tripods had had in 1984 and 1985.
Fond memories, but fear not!... History repeats itself.. this will return because the current generation have never heard of it.. we just need to stay alive long enough to see it ;)
Thanks for uploading this! It was a great series that deserved its final season to be produced and aired. Bloody BBC! I'm so glad to be one of the increasing number who don't have a TV license.
Freeman was clearly influenced from working with Jeff Wayne on War of the Worlds. This is very similar to the second half of "The Artilleryman and the Fighting Machine".
I have a vinyl album called ‘Telly Hits’ full of BBC tv themes (when the BBC actually showed/made good tv) and this is by far the coolest theme on the album (along with Edge of Darkness) 😊. 👍👍👍
The theme is higly evocatve ad as yu state, the underlying style of playing and melody constrution is instantly recognisable. Did you watch the Tripods TV series?
Sam Youd said the same thing, the first season was reasonably true to the books, the second less and less so as it progressed. I’ll never understand why productions buy a story only to change it into another one.
Je ne sais pas pourquoi il faut aller vers une planète lointaine pour tomber sur des créatures " tripodes " , nous les mecs on est aussi des tripodes sauf que la jambe du milieu est plus courte que les deux autres
Someone seriously needs to redo this series, and finish it this time.
BBC messed up trying to do war of the world's instead. They should have done this.

@@cannedmusic Well Disney did purchase the rights to The Tripods, so maybe they could either add it onto Disney+ or remake it entirely
Yes, please!
This series made me look at water towers in a new way!
Never thought of water towers that way before
@Peggy Ericson May be so, by the water towers have thoughts of YOU in mind !
@@peggyerickson2549 Check out the water tower in the little village of Riccall, in Yorkshire!
The created his own synthesizer called the Freeman Symphonizer. A truly awesome sound. The guy is a genius!
Remarkably ominous for a children's show theme.

Then you haven’t heard the theme tune to The Box of Delights, Picture Box, Chocky or Moondial :D
Chocky used to give me nightmares.
@@LulaJake that fucking scream at the start….
Remember watching this series at the Grandparents on a Saturday afternoon. Very nostalgic and a wonderful soundtrack.
Epic and just a little spooky sounding. Best use of snyth instruments.

Correct, the budget for the 3rd season was considered excessive due to the necessary use of many tripods and their interactions with humans

Like Valve, the BBC could also never count to three
they did, bloody shame too, why do that to a great series?
Great music to a great series wish they had done the third book.

Love the dark synth sound of this piece and the foreboding it creates.
this needs a reboot that has commitment.
Since the rights are owned by Disney, a reboot on Disney+ could be possible
And then you can also hear the similarities between the structure of this and Freeman's later theme from Casualty. Se you can trace a line from The War of the Worlds through to Casualty!
Thank you for the music, Mr Freeman.
It was so sad they couldn't finish the last book in the series!
I mean the TV show, as in, I wish they put the last book into a film version.

We thank the tripods
Even today after decades I imagine when seeing like a forest, that behind this forest a tripod is walking by. And I love it!
I can imagine an alternate universe where The Tripods was more successful

But that single must've been HUGE at 7'!!!! 😱

I absolutely loved the series, then read the books, and felt the show was too much of a departure from the story. Love this song, though.
