Making Planetary Rings With Particles - Voyager 4K Project

- I figured this would be a viable method to create rings around a planet, and to my surprise it's done a pretty decent job.
It's essentially just a bunch of blocks at differing sizes, parented up to a null at the center of the planet, and then rotate the null while the blocks spit out particles.
To save on resources I only make the rings around just over 180 degrees of the planet, as there's no reason to clog up the workflow with particles and objects which won't actually be seen.
Next up I'll finalise the camera movements before I add to the scene load with instancing for each individual particle/object in the ring system.
Depending on render performance I may have to reduce the number of particles/instances, but at this stage it looks pretty neat and I thought it would be interesting to see how to get to the final render, rather than just the final render.
On a plus note, the first (sun), second (flyby) and third (nebula) segments are now complete. This is the last of the complex scenes so there will be a fast turnaround on the remaining two segments.
What a clever way to create ring systems! I've always used a flattened torus and textured it but now I might use this technique if you don't mind 😛
Feel free. Your method is what I used in my last voyager intro 5 years ago :-)
Is the aim to make the whole series 4k! what would be awesome!
This planet always seemed way too small compared to the ship in the original intro.
This scene is right out wrong in the series it self because that is a "gas giant" but by the reflection of voyager this is not even 100 times slammer than our moon its even smaller than that it's impossible it can exist no matter what law of physics in ST I won't believe it. Btw nice visuals so great work
excitement
please make a tutorial on this in maya?
Nice, what program is that anyway? C4D?
Lightwave, The Choice Of The Professional™ ..15 years ago.
'Never heard of that program before, I might look in to it.
Cheers!

:-D
@AD8 Been my tool of the trade for a decade now, I might consider learning 3DS or Maya if there was a feature I need.
Why hasn't any major Film Companies hired you yet?
Because that kinda stuff is still way out of my league

Still, your work is amazing!
Why thank you sir :-) Judge me on the finished article though!
