In 2018 400 former footballers had been afflicted by dementia, according to Michael Calvin’s book State of Play. A study commissioned by the PFA and The FA found that former pros were between two and five times more likely to die from degenerative brain diseases.
Five of the starting 11 in England’s 1966 World Cup winning side (the greatest achievement in England’s international history) have been diagnosed with a disease connected to brain injury.
Ben Gilbert explains why football has a big dementia problem.

Arguing the sport is inherently dangerous and players should just 'get over it' is silly. Steps can, and should, be taken to reduce the dangers of playing any sport. Take Rugby, for example, they added the Gum Guard to protect players teeth. Noone is going to ban heading a ball nor make the players wear helmets. There will be common sense measures that can be taken to reduce or eliminate the risk of increased rates of dementia in footballers.

I played in America. A much more wide open, undisciplined game. "Boom Ball". There were A LOT of heading going on. Those towering punts would come down and meet your forehead like a rubber mallet. I was always tall (ended up 6'5") and as I got a little older, I practiced heading corners all the time. By 16, I would stay after practice sometimes and for 30-45 mins head a corner kick every 30 seconds or so. The more direct the ball in, the better to bulge the ole onion bag. And we didn't practice with highest quality balls. They were heavy and hard as a rock. When we were finished, my head would feel like a bee hive. Buzzing and throbbing. I know there must be a million people that did these same things. I'm 40 now. This is very concerning.

The head injury protocols are shocking in football - unbiased Head Injury Assessments need to take place off the pitch for at least 5 minutes, and in that time there needs to be an ability to make a temporary substitute.
The issue at the moment is that proper assessments are not under taken as a team doesn't want to be forced into a substitution. Football needs to look at Rugby and how it is implemented there - any significant head collision and you are off to the doctors for an assessment. Concussion is not immediately obvious and the player can seem fine for a minute or so, then suddenly have the effects come over them.
This is a really important step that needs to be taken, but Football are already far behind other sports in this regard.

Cte is not dependent on the severity of hits, but rather the frequency.
For the general population, the benefits outweigh the risks of football by A LOT.
In a study they found that the threshold for cte in football was 1000 hits /year. Thats roughly 3 headers if you play everyday. Anything above the 1000/year mark caused cte if you carried on for a significant amount of time.
    To prevent cte:
Get flexible and use your legs
Train your core to insane levels (think calisthenics) the greater your body control the less of an issue head hits will become.
    Strengthen neck muscles
Learn proper heading technique where you head the ball with your body moving in unison, not just your head snapping to and fro.
Remember, this is not american football which essentially guarantees adavnced cte. Even in the most prolific headers, cte was only mild.

That will will protect them from dementia and concussions, and other injuries!....Rubber protective body suits is an idea that I came up with, that i got from looking at those rubber body suits, that surfers wear, to go surfing, in the beach. Except the only modification I would make is make the footballer's full body suits made of thick rubber, and that covers the body and face of the footballer's entire body. I would put extra rubber padding on the head part of the rubber body suit. This idea would be better than having footballer's wear a helmet... American-football, Ice Hockey, basketball, rugby etc, could all benefit from this idea, for they're player's protection!.

Even so, I want to bring to the table that alcohol consumption is also a major cause of CTE. Pro players didn't care that much about their health back then. Alcohol consumption was many times over the roof. I believe it also had an impact on these diagnoses. Just my opinion though...Once again, I don't wish to say headers should't be studied and are not the cause of the late life diseases. It's just that the alcohol and in some cases, drugs, might bring the risk a little higher.
