I didn't realize how much alike the Whippet and the Stratoliner was, thanks for trying them on. Great video!
Great video as ever, man. I'm in the UK and you just can't get the great Hat shops like JJ. Once upon a time, Luton was THE hat city in England, or London. One of these days, I'll come to New York, visit the shop and say, "Kevin, I'm looking for a hat...". Don't be alarmed, I've just seen a lot of your videos!
Greetings from Czech. I really liked this video. Thank you
Oh , Gorgeous looking Traditional American Fedora hats, one a bit more formal(Whippet)looking and another(Stratoliner) a bit more casual as you said is a nice crossover, Thanks for sharing and greets, Paul
Thx Kevin as always great info !!! I have a Whippet in tawny but am seriously thinking about a Stratoliner in cognac !!!
It's gorgeous. Definitely beautiful color.. it's awesome.
Classy, simple, well designed..I never liked that Stratoliner SE much until that color came out..
it's nice, place an order w Benji, u get $35 off if u give your email. For return customers only..and u can do it once.. and even combine it w other sales..
Damn I want to come see you! You might be the man to find me the hat that looks good on me lol
I am the man,
I'm sure ..25 years doing exactly that every day..I definitely have the experience 😜 no Mondays or Tuesdays..I'm off
Ooooh just checked and none of these are available in Europe. Can we order from you and pay with PayPal ?
The only ones who seem to have any right now is Stetson, go to their website
Kevin I’m loving these shootout videos. Very informative- I like look of the Whippet & Asher.
Are they good for women? I think I could rock that size crown and brim.
We sell all three to countless women all day long, yes!! U probably look better in it than most guys..
Who makes the Asher and where can I buy one. I don't see it on the JJHAT website
We don’t sell it anymore,it is by Stetson and the name of it is called the Stetson Inwood , we called it Asher, but Stetson calls it the Inwood
Hello. Shopping for my first fedora. Looking at the stetson brand. Any recommendations? I have a long a big face.any suggestions on which model?
This is a bad time to buy Stetson brand, everyone is out of them, wait until the fall when the hats are all released.
I can’t suggest a hat w that much information, A long face usually suggests a narrow face? U might want to try a smaller, medium brim like a 2” brim.
www.jjhatcenter.com/collections/felt-hats/products/the-brant-by-magill
but I think u should not limit yourself to Stetson brand only, companies like Magill hats from Canada, Guerra from Italy, Selentino from Europe, and Akubra from Australia are all good brands that are shipping now. Stetson has been out of commission for a year or two,due to the pandemic,.so you’ll have a rough time finding any felt hats from them now, especially in the off season. All the felt hats for fall are released in September to October, hopefully Stetson will be up and running by fall.
Ok. Thanks for ur input. I appreciate it very much.
I love your vibe! I'm having trouble deciding which one out of the three i like best the Stetson Stratoliner, whippet, or the temple. Could you please do a comparison between the three?
p.s Love the vids!
We haven’t received any of those models in some time, stetson is out of stock on them all right now..huge delays, I suppose I could do it anyway though, it’s a great idea for a video, I’ll get to that eventually
You mention the Stetson Inward a.k.a. Asher. Where can I get one? I cannot find one anywhere. What store are you selling out of?
Im not a fan of feathers or hat pins. Is the hat pin removable on the Whippet Kevin?
Yeah they’re just a stick pin
Most folks ditch them
@@KTGHATS just got my Whippet. Feather and pin ditched! Thanks for the response Kevin!
Kevin is the one on the center (Thumbnail) caribou whippet?
Bingo! Yes. Dark one w the bound edge on the left is the Stratoliner SE, and the one on the right is The Asher
@@KTGHATS Hey Kevin i asked stetson to explain the difference of wool vs fur, and this is what they said, i think you might disagree!hank you for contacting Stetson Online!
Depending on the type of quality you prefer would depend on your choice.
The felt item would be more pricey and delicate, you would have to take care of this style option in order to maintain its quality and structure.
The wool style would be more durable.
Please do not get any style wet.
Links to the hats you're describing would be a big help..
The Inwood (Asher) is not in Stetsons catalog anymore, we don’t sell it anymore either. I tried there is no link on Stetsons site, it’s discontinued , only the link to the summer straw version stetson.com/products/inwood-hemp-fedora-navy
Considering the band is meant to help absorb the sweat on dress-hats, how do the Western bands compare on the cross-overs? It's something I've always wondered...
Very smart question. They will not hide the sweat. The stairs would show more, but u could eventually cover that area by changing to a wider band later on.it could take a year or two, or many years, decades..or never stain at all.. but yeah. U get a wider band towards the end of the hats life and that will breathe new life into it,covering all the sweat stains..
Thin bands do nothing functioninally
Generally less of an issue w open roads and western felt, they're so thick,I've never sweated one up,but in a good amount of time, u can
Is the Asher discontinued? Can’t find it anywhere really like the tawny color one
The Asher is sold out, we stopped carrying it. That was a name that we invented,so u won’t see it online anywhere else
... Stetson called it the Stetson Inwood , you can find some of them online, but it’s kind of a played-out style, it was hugely popular for over ten years, and ran it’s course, but right now it’s not on the Stetson website, although it’s possible some stores might still order it, it’s a long shot..more likely you’ll find some online that are left from last year.
I found some on Amazon www.amazon.com/Stetson-TFINWDB1016-Inwood-B-Hat/dp/B01M0LNBAU
Any chance could you post a video about the Dashfire’s you have in stock? I can’t find anything about those hats except here on your website. They look pretty cool and I’m torn between the Asher, & Dashfire at the moment. What do you say?
Huge quality difference. Not even close. Price difference is small though. Dashfire looks great but it's wool, and it's stiffer, some folks don't care, others don't like the feel of the wool felt. Or the idea that it's wool. I say get the one that looks cool TO YOU. but Asher felt is way better quality
KEVIN from JJ HAT CENTER 🎸HATS & GUITARS ! Right on I didn’t know it was just a Wool felt good to know. I was hoping you had the Asher in the Cordova color 7 5/8, but the websites say nada.
Kev is there a reason why you keep the tag in your hat?
I used to alter my hats sooo much, change the crown back and forth a dozen times, and change the band and this and that..and eventually I’d regret it,wishing they were new again, So I told myself whenever I get a new Borsalino, I’d leave it 100% stock next time, and I did, both green hats are stock, I removed the linings,
but the crown has never been reshaped, I keep it stock, the original shape..
Most Borsalino hats have square, black tags, this batch had oval tags, which I never saw before or after this batch. I thought they were cool, so I left them on.
@@KTGHATS Kevin is the bounded edge wider on the whippet than the stratoliner one?
@@jordanbaker3595 I actually don't bro, they look awful once they come off. The glue stains the hat i just don't like them.
Would you say that the Whippet is better suited for people with bigger faces (not fat, just a big ol beard) than the Stratoliner? I got my stratoliner today ... looks kind of tiny on me. Any other ideas? An open road, maybe? But that one has even less crown than the strat, right?
The Whippet and the Stratoliner are really the same hat, just one has a wide ribbon and wide brim binding, the other is narrow band and binding , shape of the two hats are the same. Let me think for a minute, Send me some pics to quadrogong@gmail.com
generally those hats are fine for wide faces, beards etc.. but yeah, there’s so many alternatives.. send me a pic or two?
Hey Kevin, how do you set down a hat? For example let's say the whippet. Do you set it down on the brim or the crown? I've seen way too many things telling you how to put down a hat and now I'm confused.
Set it upside down, on the crown, anyone who says “on the brim” is dead wrong, and an idiot. The brim is the part that loses its stiffness, gets floppy and wavy... the crown structurally is strong, it won’t lose shape unless u squeeze it repeatedly. .and guess what? When u set a hat on its brim, not only are u making the brim get soft and floppy, but when it’s in this position, you pick the hat up by its pinches, like a handle, and then u distort the crown and wear a hole through the pinches.all because u grab it in the same place, over and over..
When u correctly store a hat upside down, there’s no weight on the brim, the sensitive part. And instead of grabbing it in the same place,by the pinch, hundreds of times, u grab it by all different parts of the brim, because that’s how u naturally grab an inverted hat, by the brim,I’m different parts each time.
Every brimmed hat is stored upside down, unless it has a totally flat brim, like a bolero,or a boater...flat hats should be stored on the brim, not the crown.
@@KTGHATS Thankyou Kevin. You are extremely helpful, and I mean extremely!
Is the brim the same width on Stratoliner and Whippet?
Pretty sure they are..
What I don’t like on the caribou Whippet is that the grey color of the band blends in with the hat. I used to see pictures of a caribou Whippet with black band and binding. Do they not make those anymore? PS, great videos as always.
We order them custom, they make whatever we want, we ask, they just make what we request..
But it might be a standard color combination,
I'm not sure how most grey whippets are ordered at other shops,
It could be Stetson's standard band choice for caribou..I've got no idea
all the grey hats I'm the shop have black bands, I think the majority of us here like it grey on grey, me included..it looks cleaner, imo,
it could be changed for $30 to any color or width u can dream up..
but no,sorry. We are doing it this way now, just to mix it up, unfortunately,I think it's gonna stay that way for a while..
What color combo is that stratoliner?
Hey I love the whippet but I’m not too keen on the binding. Am I better off ordering a whippet with no binding or just changing the band on the stratoliner, since it has such a small binding on it?
U can’t order a whippet w no binding, so yeah, the band change on the strat is easy
KEVIN from JJ HAT CENTER 🎸HATS & GUITARS !
Ok thanks so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to answer all the comments. Shows true love for your product and those are the best salesman, the ones who believe in their products. Your awesome man! Rock on!
is the Stetsonian discontinued I can't find many stetsonians on sale
Diggin ⛏ these shoot out videos.
Thx 🤠✌️ happy u like em
Well look who's here 🙄☝🏼
Finally, I found this well done explanation for the difference between two designs
Thank you ☺️
Hey Kevin, I’m a pretty big guy would you recommend the Whippet or the Asher? I’m torn between the two. Cheers!
It’s ok to wear either, I guess..
it’s more of a taste issue, or a personal choice..I think a larger brim is easier to wear for many folks..
. Some people feel a little self conscious in a smaller brim , I guess a whippet will look a bit more old timey and nostalgic, it’ll protect you more, and it’s easier to hide behind a larger brim,
the Asher will look more modern and neat.
If you’re super overweight and really big that way, a larger brim would look great, maybe ovoid black.. if you’re just big, like kind of your average, heavyweight American guy with a big face..the Asher will look okay, but it’ll always be a small brim.. I’m a huge fan of the Asher, I think it’s a more stylish hat..
but you need to take time, no really ask yourself if u will be comfortable with a shorter, neat brim like that.. you chose two good styles. The grey Saxon by Stetson is an a,axing choice too. It’s right in the middle, brim wise.. that’s a hard one, without a photo and more info about you..
I’d say,it all co,es down to what you’re comfortable with..look at lots of photos of folks wearing both styles, and keep looking at them, how it looks on the models, compare yourself to them, and try to picture yourself.. the answer will come to you if u keep researching and looking at photos.
I like the Asher better, but not if you’re really, really big faced, like hugely overweight.. then I suggest wider brims above 2”.
U chose good ones, but it’s up to you.. that’s a personal choice, keep researching it, the answer will come
Thanks Kevin you really helped me out. I’m not an overly huge guy just a big dude. I’ll just probably end up getting both 😁 thanks for your time some really good info there. Cheers!
@@KTGHATS hey Kevin. Ended up getting both the Caribou Whippet and the Tawny Asher and absolutely love both hats. I didn’t know I could pull off a smaller brim but now I know I can, probably wouldn’t go lower than 1 3/4. Any other short brim hats you recommend? Mahalo!
What's the most popular color in the stratoliner?
Stratoliner SE.. it was Navy but now definitely cognac.. it's gorgeous, too
In the Premier strat it's always silver belly by far.
Hey what's the color on asher in this video
Caribou ( grey)
I really like your videos can I order from Japan
Yes u can www.jjhatcenter.com
How the crown height compare between the following: gun club/Dune, Strato, and Whippet? Thanks
Whippet and stratoliner SE are the same height, almost the same hat with different trim only. The stratoliner premier is higher though, (a very high.vintage style crown)they’re like a 4 1/2” crown, The dune is a 4 1/4” a lower, sleeker crown, much wider brim and it’s stiff, western felt. Not a dress hat like the other two
Kevin, could you please do someday a comparison between the Asher and the Saxon?
Okay I'll try to get to it
@@KTGHATS Thank you! I’d appreciate :)
Reminds me of Humphrey Bogart , Casablanca. Here's looking at you kid.
The whippet looks good Kevin but i'm gonna have to try an Asher.
I have a hemp Asher ..it looks better when my hair is shorter
It's a reliable hat, good quality and the style..it gets u. When u try it, it takes u by surprise how nice it looks
Is the Stetson Barnstormer essentially a western crossover version of the Asher, or even the Benchmark?
It’s really just a narrow ribbon on a medium brim fedora, low crown..That’s a clearance hat, we don’t really order that anymore,
but it’s similar to those hats in shape,
but it has a longer, softer brim,
and that crossover type band.
The brim is a bunch wider than an Asher, and it has a raw edge, Asher has a bound edge,
The Benchmark is pure beaver, similar specs though, low crown, 2” brim.. the Barnstormer is wider in the brim, and the felt is way thinner.
The Asher sells like crazy, at least 2-6 Ashers sell every day, without
while the Barnstormer was a weak seller, it barely sold at all, we ordered it twice and the stock lingered for a while.
although not a bad design, it never caught on.
KEVIN from JJ HAT CENTER 🎸HATS & GUITARS ! Thank you for taking the time to give an informative response! I’ve got my eye on the Asher when the tawny’s back in stock. Hopefully there’ll be some good holiday discount promotions as well. Take Care!
I'd pick the Asher ! I want one!
The Sage Green Asher has always been a hat I’d like to own!
For me this time the winner is... Stratoliner S.E.(my dream).I have 4 Stetson hats:)
I choose the Whippet 🐩
Just picked up a Whippet in Tawny Royal Deluxe. Definitely going to pickup an Asher.
Enjoy that Whippet! Great choice, that was my first hat!
The Asher?...You’ll love it , it’s just like a little mini, compact version of Whippet, real sharp & tight looking, what a great design.
I LOVE it in Tawny, grey,sage..
I think Stetson really shines at stuff like that, the Saxon and Asher are some of my fav hats of all time, they’re just so useful and versatile, like u always want to toss them on for any situation
The Whippet is my first “real” hat. Definitely planning to pickup more. I live in CT, so I’m hoping to come visit JJ Hat in the city when I can. I NEED an Asher!
Kevin, I just bought a tawny Whippet and a natural Strat after watching your videos. You are gonna make me go broke bro!! These ain't cheap!! LOL
Yeah, they’ll last you a good long time though, and if you’re ever in town, bring then in for a free tune up, we steam and reshape hats free !
@@KTGHATS If I ever get out that way, I'm coming in and ain't leaving without buying a hat!! 😎😎
Farmers in the 1930s to 50s wore similar hats.
I know there is a Stetson Whippet in my near future. Chestnut or something similar for colour.
Stratoliner!
You just converted me from stratoliner to whippet... That said I need to see a shoot out between the 2 above against the stetson Ian
Stetsonian
"Ian?"
I'll do a stetsonian vs whippet probably and try to toss in a premier Stratoliner
@@KTGHATS Type o..... I meant stetsonian not Ian
I gotta go with the whippet,i dont like those thin ribbon bands!
Same here.. me too
@@KTGHATS wish i would have seen the whippet, i don't like the small bands either...too bad i purchased the sratoliner a mistake on my part.
Alot of People don't like the Fact that they kill Animals for their Fur I don't either! I'm going to go to Litefelt or Buffalo Wool maybe? I wonder if they kill Buffalo for their Hides?
The Buffalo collection is just marketing for their cheaper line, it’s mostly wool, with a sprinkle of rabbit fur in it . I doubt there’s Buffalo, if there is, it’s like a pinch, enough to classify it as a “wool blend” but it’s almost all wool.
Stick with the crushable litefelt wool stuff, thee are some higher quality wool felts available.
Watching your vids always relaxes me Kevin in a life full of crap
Yeah, thanks.. I’m happy to hear that. I struggle with relaxation myself, I’m a very jumpy guy, but when I play guitar on camera, I get somewhat trancelike and mesmerized, it relaxes me too. So I guess we help each other out, huh? Thanks and good evening, Kev
@@KTGHATS True bro thank you.
Love that second hat. I know it’s a mans hat but I’d wear it anyway
C'est LaVie I think women always look good in any hat.
You'd look Wayyyyy better than a lot if men wearing it,too..
Ladies w fedoras are nice,I like that look
KEVIN from JJ HAT CENTER 🎸HATS & GUITARS ! 😊 I wear a lot of men’s hats. I just put a cluster of cool feathers on the side, a flower or something to make it my own.
I collect exotic bird feathers and also make stuff that’s on the edge. So almost any kind of hat is fun for me.
Btw that was funny. Almost everyone looks good in a hat ... if it’s the right hat
C'est LaVie Where do you tend to get most of your feathers?
