I wondered about that, but it was closed in with plywood so not much weight was added. It would be fantastic to open it back up one day. So many other projects to complete before that could even be a possibility.
The Landes house, nearby, had to remove the entire porch flooring system and recast it because the old one had deteriorated much more than 1702's porch.
From a distance and up-close, the porch is stunning. Would never think so much could be wrong with it after so many years of wear, tear, and, to some degree, neglect. It's looking at the porch that makes me think about how houses like this just aren't around anymore and how precious they are. I live near the RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach, California and I think there are more yay-sayers than nay-sayers, but the nay-sayers are loud and it hurts to hear them. Often times in restoration, things have to get worse before they get better...which you are NO stranger to, and all the recent controversy surrounding the ship politically and structurally were brought out into the open and her future is looking very positive (though the news gives only a small portion of the truth and appear to be on the nay-saying side). I don't know if you've been given any opposition in restoring this house, but it's great to have people like you who really care about these irreplaceable and precious pieces of history. Soon, the mansion will house parties and enrich people for generations to come. COPY & PASTE FROM OLD/ORIGINAL VIDEO
Howdy, so I've been working my way back through the "Season 1" videos on this new channel, having already seen quite a bit of the material as it was originally posted (though not all -- the season playlists are a big help), and wanted to make a general suggestion -- on the old channel, the posted date provided a good reference for when the video events occurred to help putting things into a timeline perspective, but since much of that is getting reposted with some alterations, that reference doesn't exist anymore. It may be helpful to either include those dates of original postings, or at least the month/year, in the descriptions on this new channel to help illustrate time passage, how long ago certain things occurred, etc.
That's a great suggestion. I did try to put the videos in a better order on the playlist and with my episode numbering because sometimes I was very late getting the video done so the date posted didn't necessarily correspond to when the work was done or the work took place over several months time. Now that I'm better organized, I could go back and get date ranges. Hopefully having playlists by year will help also.
I don't understand why engineers would ghost you. Do they not see it as a challenge? Or is it more they don't want legal responsibility? Or they just don't want to bother?
Thank you for sharing!
My pleasure!
Can't wait to see the porch once fully restored. It will be magnificent!
Someday.....
Beautiful porch!
It was made for a party!
Thank you! I always learn so much from your videos.
I'm so glad! I like learning new things. It keeps your mind young.
That turret on the second floor level was originally an open porch. I suspect it weighs more now than it did originally!
Yes! I was just going to say that. I’m with you, I think that extra weight is pushing down on that porch.

I think it would be really pretty opened up!
One thing I have learned from your videos.."Everything that glitters is not gold" ..
Ain't that the truth!
That's such a great porch, I hope it can be restored to its original glory.
This is why we don't use exposed iron beams in construction, kids.
It is a great porch. The floor will be the next big project. It's such an important part of the house's character.
The Landes house, nearby, had to remove the entire porch flooring system and recast it because the old one had deteriorated much more than 1702's porch.
I'm worried about having to do that. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the floor can be saved.
Ahhh I remember this…..
I do to - every night in my nightmares!

It may be complicated but very necessary to repair.
I know. Can you imagine this house without the great porch.

I think they are just busy and can pick and choose what they want to work on. This one is a challenge for sure.
