I was at the show. A fight broke out right in front of the stage. A couple of guys were out of control, annoying everyone. I guess Ben saw it, got pissed and stormed off. They pulled the guys out of the crowd, everyone cheered and the concert resumed, Panties unbunched

Dave Depper, their guitarist, basically confirmed on Twitter that it was a technical issue that upset him.
In-ear monitors are shit. I've never heard a good thing about them.

I was there last night. There were pretty hostile guys trying to mosh and ended up causing a fight near the front of the stage. When they started pushing into security which in turn pushed into speakers, Ben decided to storm off.However he was gracious enough to come back onstage and perform an encore of two songs.

I was there too, he also briefly apologized for "the sudden exit". Weird, but not as bad as it could have been by any means, especially considering the reason.

The local paper in Charleston said that a fight broke out and drunk people were throwing stuff on the stage and the band couldn't keep in time. Ben left because they made such a huge distraction.
I keep seeing a report that people three things at him. I really don't think that's true. It seems his guitars were shorting due to humidity/sweat. He dropped his guitar after it cut out badly but kept singing until the drummer quit playing to point out the fight. Presumably, he thought Ben quit because of the fight. When Jason stopped, Ben got super mad and "dropped the mic." Don't think it was any more than that. The biggest bummer was the set list that was dramatically shorter than other stops on the tour (I guess the weather delay and heat/humidity had more to do with that than the freak out.)
They didn't throw things, but the crowd was absolutely awful. They kept screaming stupid shit during brothers on a hotel bed, which really ruined one of the best live moments I've ever seen. Ben honestly shouldn't have reacted with so much drama, but I totally understand why he was upset.

That's a good possibility. He was throwing the cable around all night. I didn't know if it was for dramatic effect or if something was wrong with it. It was probably buzzing loudly in his ear if it was a short.

I was at this concert in Charleston, SC. Some idiots started fist fighting in the front row and security had to pull them out of the crowd and remove them.
He was probably upset about What Sarah Said.
If you look at the drummer at 0:22 he points into the audience and you can see some people waving security over and pointing around 0:20. Looks to me like someone in the front pissed him off.
A few minutes after the lights went dark, a man was escorted forcefully by event security staff out of the venue. It may have been related.

I would have done the same thing, other ppl payed to enjoy this night and your just ruining it for them.
Wasn't at the show but you can clearly tell it's his in-ear monitors. Watch as he jolts and takes them off immediately. The crowd is irrelevant. I'd be pissed too if I was Ben, their sound deserves way more respect than what they are being given.
I saw them the night before in St. Augustine and they had equipment issues then too.
Saw them in Louisville two days after this and they were still having equipment failure. What a shame.
this is actually a great way to end the set. only thing that would have been better would be if he smashed his guitar

Whatever happened, Ben's temper tantrum was ridiculous. It was one of the shortest shows I've ever been to. Not sure exactly how long they were on stage but it seemed like a total of 45 minutes. I love Death Cab but I feel completely ripped off.
There was an hour rain delay after the opening band - I wonder if that had something to do with it.
That could be it. I'm thinking this was just a convergence of a whole bunch of stuff. The crowd sucked. The rain delayed it. He was the sweatiest person I've ever seen and clearly looked miserable. The guitar kept shorting out. The dudes fighting in the front. Maybe it just all pushed him over the edge.
I was thinking the same thing. I've never seen someone sweat so much in my life. He did look absolutely miserable. I felt bad for him through the whole performance.

Who knows, must have been problems through the earpiece and such and he must have got so annoyed he had to walk off. Pretty common to see it happen with musos haha must be very frustrating.
The drummer stood up and pointed to the crowd at the same time as Ben Gibbard started to get upset, so, it could be something in the crowd or some crowd member did something...

I was there and a fight broke out . You can see at :21 a guy pointing to someone else. Two dudes were going at it. I'm not sure why they were fighting but you can see the drummer pointing so I think like someone else said, something was thrown at Ben. Security tossed them out.
I was there as well. Some idiot got dragged away after he went off stage so I figured something got thrown at him too. My wife says she thinks she saw a cigarette get thrown at him but can't verify that.

Security did do their jobs. I was standing right by them (security) and they immediately ran over to throw the two guys out that were fighting. He seemed to be really distressed by the fight

not being funny, it's a disgrace he walked off. Any musician can tell you that whatever happens, you do not just throw a tantrum and storm off stage. I don't believe that people were throwing stuff, it looks more like the tech kept cutting off, but either way, if everyone in the audience has paid a pretty amount to see your band then you owe it to them to at least apologize and try to finish instead of ruining the show.
